XP PC - bootup stuck at 1st bootup screen
I have a PC that runs Windows XP that I have been using for a few years. It
is custom built using an MSI 865GM3-LS motherboard and an Intel Pentium CPU.
On booting up it now gets stuck at the first bootup screen which displays an
MSI logo on the top left corner, and Intel Pentium Logo on the lower right
corner and some text in the middle that reads "8Xtreme Series",
"Performance, Durability, Stability",
I have reset the CMOS by setting the jumper to reset it, but still have the
same problem.
Help!! What is wrong? Is the motherboard bad, is it the battery, what is it?
Thanks!! Tag: Attn:phillo - LCD Monitor Tag: 330500
Guarding against file transfer errors between media
Is there a way to ensure error-free file transfers between different media -
especially between a computer and an external drive (USB2) ?
Using such drives here it is sometimes found that some files (not any
particular type) would be corrupt or damaged. This does not happen in any
alarming proportions but does happen. At random and not confined to any
particular machine or device.
All drives checked out okay physically as well as in CHKDSK. Does the USB2
process itself include an error percentage, BTW ?
Any insights would be highly appreciated. TIA.

windows xp add hardware wizard stops with error code 10
Hi a friend booted up her computer this morning and the keyboard would not
work. It is a ps2 type connection, purple plug. She went into device manager
but it is not showing an entry for a keyboard but there is an unidentified
entry. She tried updating the unidentified entry but it cannot find any
drivers.
She then went to control panel and ran the add hardware wizard but it
stopped with an error code ten. Thinking the keyboard was faulty sheI
unplugged it and tried running the add hardware wizard without the keyboard
attached but still got the same error message.
When she ran the keyboard icon from control panel on the hardware tab the
window is blank.
Any suggestions as to why the add hardware wizard will stop with an error
even with no keyboard attached? I will be going to see her tomorrow and she
is at present just using her mouse and the onscreen keyboard to try to solve
this problem. I have no further info than I have already told you.

Nic never working - Realtek 8139
I have a great problem on XP Pro Sp2.
Notice: Hardware P4 dual and nic realtek 8139 fully working. Tested with any
kind of Linux. No virus. No troyan. Tried sfc/scannnow and reinstallation
over current XP starting from CD.
I've tried everything, even started with UBCD4Win (avoiding the lock on
hardware profiles in the registry) and deleting every reg entry I can found
bounded to the nic, and every drivers present in the HD, inf, and even from
.cab archive cache.
I have disabled the nic, installed a new one, and I got the same problem
again.
I've serched hidden nic, but I don't see any other nic (
Tested various drivers, from the original bounded with the nic (and is for
XP) to new realtek update of this year.
NOTHING!
Everytime I reinstall the nic/driver, everything seems OK, but finally XP
says (sorry for traslation because my system is Italian located) that it
can find a file. I don't know what file because it says nothing about this
file. Every kind of driver i tested say that.
Do you have any procedure to check every single step XP do to reach that bad
result? A system to debug the problem step, by step finding why Xp end to
that result? Tag: Attn:phillo - LCD Monitor Tag: 330484
Serious AUDIO DEVICE problem; due to sp2 Microsoft update install.
Alrighty. I called Microsoft to get some help with my system restore. Was
having some issues with it; it wasn't working. The first time I downloaded
Windows XP SP2 from your website, my system restore disappeared. I called
Microsoft, they connected to me, and within a couple of hours it was fixed.
THEN, microsoft manually re-downloaded SP2 for me "AGAIN". As soon as we got
off the telephone, I realized that my AUDIO DRIVER was no longer working. My
drivers are all screwed up to no end. I cannot find any in my system that
work and when I try to redownload them from TOSHIBA (I HAVE A SATELLITE),
they are not updating or even redownloading properly. Microsoft did this to
me and I don't have a CD, it was a floor model and I never got around to
buying a restore disk. What Microsoft failed to realize is that TOSHIBA
SATELLITES CANNOT BE UPDATED WITH SP2. I am not the only one with a TOSHIBA
SATELLITE that has had this issue. A number of forums discuss this issue and
even some of the greatest hackers out there cannot figure this one out (it
seems easy to fix, but it is not). I believe there is something screwey with
my registry too.
Please help me, call me, connect with me, and fix your mistake. Tag: Attn:phillo - LCD Monitor Tag: 330476
Random crashes - please help?
Hello,
I was hoping someone in here could help me with a problem I've been
having with my computer crashing.
I'm not exactly sure when this all started, but it was well over a
year ago (my computer is about 4 years old). About every 30 days or so
my computer would just restart. I didn't think much of it since it
only happened about once a month. But then it started happening more
often. So I turned off the auto-restarts and started looking at the
BSOD's and sending error reports to Microsoft.
The BSOD's weren't always the same.. I'd get anything from
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, PAGEFAULT_IN_A_NON_PAGED_AREA, or
something else. And it's VERY random! Sometime I'll get a BSOD after 2
days.. sometimes in a week.. the longest I've gone without a blue
screen is 42 days.
A couple times the error report said that it was my anti-virus program
causing the problem. The computer came with Norton AV 2000 installed.
But when the subscription ran out.. I uninstalled Norton and installed
Avast. Microsoft advised that I check services to see if I don't have
two AV programs running at the same time. I have AVG Anti Spyware and
Spybot S&D installed which are compatible with Avast. So that can't be
the problem. I've also been told it might be a memory problem.. or a
driver problem.
The last BSOD said that the crash was caused by a device driver.. but
how can I find out ~which~ driver? I looked at the event viewer and
this is what was in it..
Event Type: Error
Event Source: System Error
Event Category: (102)
Event ID: 1003
Date: 4/12/2008
Time: 1:33:01 PM

Error code 1000000a, parameter1 00000004, parameter2 0000001c,
parameter3 00000001, parameter4 804e1476.
I've been researching this problem online for so long.. but can't seem
to narrow down what the problem could be. Could anyone please help?
I'm at wits end.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

Any USB DOS mouse drivers (useful for some boot disks, etc)?
(Before anyone asks: yes, I know there are a couple of DOS newsgroups on
the microsoft server, but they are unpopulated (been "there" already). So
I'm looking for that here, since I'm using WinXP, and this seems the best
place to ask).
I'm looking for a USB mouse driver for DOS access (for a new Dell without
USB legacy BIOS support). Some boot disks use DOS, but I can't find any
USB mouse drivers that work for me. I've been doing some research on the
net, and in the Dell user forums, and know some such drivers do exist, but:
1. There is no legacy USB support "option" in my new Dell Windows XP
computer's BIOS, but the "USB controller" option in BIOS is enabled, of
course.
2. I've tried "usbmice" (with OCHI and UHCI drivers), and also DUSE, but
none of them work on my PC with a simple optical mouse. Does anybody know
of any others?
3. If a driver doesn't exist that will work on this PC, would it instead be
possible to add some I/O card (or a PS/2 card) and get a PS/2 mouse instead,
or something along those lines, to allow for mouse support (in these DOS
boot disks, or other DOS apps)?
Thanks, if anyone has any ideas!

Device Manager questions
I see two of the following in the Device Manager with yellow icons
containing an "!"
HID Non-User Input Data Filter
The Properties/General and Driver tabs shows the same data for both of them.
The General tab has the following info:
Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)
I believe one is for the keyboard and one is for the mouse.
Are these the code that for the extended keys on the keyboard and extended
buttons on the mouse?
Does it make sense that drive is the same for both of them?
On the Details tab the strings are different.
There is also a HID-compliant device entry in the Device Manager. What is
this for?
Also two USB Human Interface Devices.
These last three do not have the ! icon attached.
The reason I'm interested is that I can't get the extended keys to work on
my laser keyboard 6000 v2.
If I uninstall the devices I mentioned above and reboot, and press the
volume control key while windows is starting, I get the volume icon on the
screen for a little while. The Installed Wireless Device pops up followed by
one (not two) Installed HID-Something, and the volume display fades away and
further pressing the key will not bring it back.
Any helpful suggestion would be appreciated. Tag: Attn:phillo - LCD Monitor Tag: 330446
USB2.0 Camera says this device can perform faster
I have a Dell Latitude D620 notebook with Windows XP SP2. Whenever I
connect devices that are USB2 capable, they function at USB2 speeds,
EXCEPT my Sony DSC-S500 camera. Every time I connect it, I get the
"This Device can perform faster...." popup in the system tray. The

issue with. I have tried unistalling the USB Mass Storage Device in
the Device Manager, but that did nothing for me. Any help would be

The old "C" Drive replacement issue
I've done it before - will do it again - and the age-old problem cannot be
rectified by this old guy.... I want to replace my "C" (boot) drive with a
larger/faster drive. First, I back up my stuff. I Install the new larger
drive. I use every type of "copy" software known to mankind (this man
anyway). I follow the directions - be it from MS, Seagate, Maxtor, 3rd party
vendor, etc....
What do I wind up with? A "D" Drive that is bigger, faster - but hosed up,
because all of the programs are looking for "C", of course!
Reading the News Groups, all I see is, "You can't change the letter for the
"C" drive". OK then - what does everybody else do, short of having to
reinstall XP on the new drive, than reinstall all of the programs they own???
Thanks in advance from this grouchy old SOB.

Windows XP and Expresscards
Hi,
I've recently brought a laptop that has an Expresscard slot, which is the
replacement for the old PCMCIA cards. I'm having some trouble using the
card with the laptop and as part of the diagnostic process I thought I'd
just check to make sure that XP supports the Expresscards. I've done some
checking on the web, and I've found some documents from Microsoft's WHDC
that mention Express cards and XP. So, I assume that XP can support
Expresscards.
The question I have is whether XP SP2 does actually support Expresscards?
If it does then do I need any drivers, updates, or hotfixes beyond those
contained in XP SP2?
Thanks.

PC won't start.
I have a Dell Dimension 2350 Desktop. I plugged in a new Mouse this morning,
put the installation disk in and all was ok. Used the computer for a short
while then switched off as normal. Remembered there was something else I
wanted to do so switched Comp back on but no joy. The Screen stayed Black,
the LED's by the Power Switch stayed off and the only light that came on was
the one by the CD- Tray which flashes continuously. When I press the button
on the CD the Tray only comes out part way or not at all. I tried switching
Computer on and off again a couple more times but got the same negative
result. If it's just that the CD Burner is knackered, why wouldn't the
Computer boot up? If it is more serious than just the CD Burner, as the
Computer is heavily used and about 5 years old, I'm assuming it probably
isn't worth spending too much on? Any ideas what it might be?

ThinkPad T61 XP - Power Cycle Problem
Hi All,
I've had two major problems with my T61 laptop since receiving it about 3
weeks ago. The biggest problem is that when I put it into any low power
mode (mainly I use shutdown or standby), it continually exits the mode,
then re-enters the mode until eventually the battery is dead. When I take
my laptop home at night, I just continually hear it beep as it goes in and
out of standby. My only solution so far has been to shutdown and remove
the battery.
The second, smaller issue has been that it will occassionally shut down on
its own while I'm in the middle of using it. The PC just instantly turns off.
This has happened about 4 times this month.
Any one know why this might be happening?
Thanks,

OT: Intel stock vs heatpipe cooler
Sorry for being a bit off-topic but, surely there's lots of builders in
here.
I've built lots of boxes in the past and never really dabbled with "super"
cpu coolers i.e. stock heatsink and fan always did a sufficient job.
A few months ago I upgraded my faithful old XP2600 Barton Skt. A to a D935
Conroe cpu, on a "Conroe" motherboard, and during lots of digging on the
web, at that time, noticed observations that the Pentium D's ran "hot"
compared to others. My "D" core always idled at approx. 38 degrees | 42
degrees under load. Yesterday I fitted a cheap Akasa triple heatpipe cooler
and noticed that the thermal "paste" was quite soft. When I removed the
stock Intel heatsink it appeared that the thermal compound was quite thick,
(obviously it had "cured"), but it hadn't spread out very much, suggesting
that it was perhaps too thick, or "aged," when I originally fitted the
thing.
I'm not going to try it just to satisfy my curiosity but, do you think that
if I cleaned that up, and refitted the stock h/s with a good quality thermal
compound, that it would run a lot cooler ?

Passwords
I have just run software which analyses the hardware and software of a
computer. I was surprised to see passwords to ISPs and Outlook Express
accounts which, in use, are hidden by blobs. I already knew that it is very
easy to discover passwords to MS Office files. Access to passwords probably
goes much wider than this.
Let this be a lesson. You may not have a file containing all your passwords
for someone to steal your information. It is already on the computer just
waiting to be harvested, possibly remotely!
This strengthens the argument for removing and destroying the hard disk(s)
of any computer before disposing of unwanted computers.

Dell Inspirion refuses to charge battery.
The battery on my 2 year old, out-of-warranty, Dell Inspirion E1505 was
almost dead ( about 6 min. charge retention). A new Dell battery was
around 200$ and hence I bought a replacement battery from Kahlon
(guaranteed to be E1505 compatible) for half the price.
After I swapped in my new Kahlon battery my Dell beeped on boot-up and
issued a warning of the sort: "Unrecognized battery type; Will not be
able to charge". Pressing F1 allowed me to ignore this and continue. I
kept the AC charger connected for about 12 hrs to get the battery its
recommended initial charge. Subsequently I disconnected AC power and
proceeded to work on the battery till it drained fully (about 4 hours).
Laptop worked fine. (all the while the battery charging LED blinks
green/orange)
On next recharges same warning recurs. F1 allows me to bypass. Only
difference now the battery does not charge at all. On AC adapter
disconnect the laptop immediately dies. Double clicking on the power bar
gives me all the battery details including Amp-hrs, manufacturer etc.
Charge %age always remains at zero.
I have no clue how to fix this! I suspect its the right battery but some
Dell trick that prevents me from using anything other than their
expensive "official" battery. No proof but a strong suspicion. Unfair.
Debug steps so far:
1. Tried booting from a Knoppix Live Linux CD. Still same warning. Will
work only so long as I have the adapter. /proc/acpi/battery recognizes
all battery details. Charge %age remains zero.
2. Tried BIOS. No battery recalibration options. No user-changeable
battery settings at all there. Probably Dell "sanitized" the BIOS to
some custom-version.
3. Only one BIOS flash upgrade listed on Dell website for this model. Its
only an optional update. Too chicken to try it yet lest I end up with an
"expensive doorstop"
Any help at all is greatly appreciated! If I can help it I do not want
to pay Dell 200$ to inject new life into a laptop that cost $700 2 years
ago!

Hardware Wizard pops up, but then it says it can't find the driver.
I've tried different mice with the same result. Right now I'm using my
laptop mouse plugged into a serial port. Everything else that's usb
works fine. I've tried looking on Microsoft's site, but I guess I'm
using the wrong search terms or something. It's a Logitech corded
optical mouse & their site says to use Windows native driver. Tag: Attn:phillo - LCD Monitor Tag: 330218
PC won't start?
Philips iQoun PC with an MSI MS-7071 m/b.
At switch on there's a quick display of the boot screen then the monitor
switches back to standby, can't even get to BIOS Setup.
There are no POST beeps at all.
All fans are running and no dust inside it.
The PC appears to be still booting because the HDD activity LED is flashing
but here's the odd thing, it's still flashing even with the HDD totally
disconnected, both power and data. Also have DVD drive disconnected.
Checked CMOS battery with multimeter, it's above 3V.
Also tried clearing CMOS with onboard jumper.
Tried reseating RAM.
Graphics and audio are onboard on this.
Almost certainly hardware fault but where to start, CPU, RAM, PSU or m/b
itself?
Any advice appreciated.

iTunes 7.6.x: Can't find, delete or Last Played custom genre non-DRM
Since upgrading from iTunes 4.9 to iTunes 7.6, I have been unable to
seach for or delete songs in my Music folder, or in any Playlist,
that
uses a custom genre.
These are non-Digital Rights Management songs (like free podcasts and
CD rips). I can view the songs in their custom smart playlist
folders,
I can play them in iTunes and on my iPod, but I cannot find them in
the iTunes Spotlight search, I cannot delete them in any view, and
they do not show a "Last Played" date even when I know they have been
played and other, non-custom genre files show a Last Played date.
None of these problems existed before upgrading (I didn't want to
upgrade from 4.9, but Apple forced me to do it to regain access to my
purchased songs).
I have an iPod mini and I keep all my songs on my iPod (with the
exception of purchased DRM songs downloaded from iTunes store, which
are in a folder on my computer). Windows XP SP2
Any ideas how I can force iTunes 7.6.x to treat my custom genre songs
like any other non-DRM song and allow search, deletion and play
history?
Thanks. Tag: Attn:phillo - LCD Monitor Tag: 330211
DOS/SafeMode
Hi
I need to get into Dos mode in order to delete a file which is blocking
SafeMode to run.
Safemode starts loading but stops at a particular file and then can't get
further.

SATA DVD burner not working in Windows XP
I just bought a SATA DVD burner (Samsung SH-S203N) from newegg.com and I
am having some problems with it. When I open the tray it comes out and
then automatically goes back in without me doing anything and before I
can put a CD/DVD in the tray or take a CD/DVD out of it. This is most
annoying. I have a dual boot machine with Linux on it and this does not
happen in Linux. So, I am assuming that there is some setting in
Windows that maybe I should be able to change to fix this. Anyone know
how to fix this?

XP hangs on boot with 4gig of DDR3 on line installing Mup.sys
XP runs fine with 2 Gig of DDR3 mem installed. MoBo is DX38BT, cpu is Cr2D
E8400 3GHz. When i add 2nd set of CD3X1024-1800C7D mem sticks for a total of
4 gig system bios sees it, but XP hangs on boot up at:
"multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\Mup.sys" boot
up hangs at this line and will not proceed. Boot up into Safe Mode will
work but system will hang if trying to boot up normal at that line listed
above. Any suggestions or answers as to why system will not boot to normal
mode with the 4 gig of DDR3 mem installed. Take the two sticks out leaving 2
gig of exact same ram and system boots fine with out any problems.

speed and reliability of the CPU and the DATA cable
Hi ,
Can you disconnect the 2nd data cable from the CD Rom and connect a 2nd HD
to it?
How is the speed and reliability of the CPU and the DATA cable affected by
using one HD or using 2 HD's?
How would you connect the average XP home PC to work with heavy duty Multi
Media Video, etc. with 1 or more DATA cables and 1 or more HD's?

Cards in AGP slot do not work
I recently cleaned the dust out of my desktop machine and since then I have
not been able to get my GForce 5200, or an older AGP card to work. At first I
would get the boot screen before the monitor went black. Now I uninstalled
the unidentified video device and I get nothing. I still get video from the
VGA connection installed on the Motherboard (Intel D865GBF). I have let the
wizard search for drivers but none are found. I have reinstalled the Nvida
driver from a CD, but that does not help either. In device manager I also
notice that there is no entry for display adapters.
I have tried to follow the steps outlined in Article 200435, but there is no
\Device\Video entry in HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\hardware\DeviceMap\Video ending in
\Device0.
Can anyone help me get my dual monitor display back up? I would be grateful
for any attempts to help. Tag: Attn:phillo - LCD Monitor Tag: 330146
cannot install usb devices on msi k9n neo-f mainboard
Hi,
Thanks for reading.
On my brothers computer we installed a new mainboard: msi k9n neo-f.
Than we installed winxp SR2.
Problem is that the usb mouse and usb webcam don't function.
When we plug the mouse or camera in, the system recognizes that there is
"new hardware", it starts installing, but fails with a general error
containing code 28.
Also, the mouselight is on during the boot process of the the computer,
but goes out as soon as windows starts in the boot procedure.
In hardware tab of device control, the usb ports are ok, but the mouse
has a yellow exclamation point mentioning no driver installed.
Any help is much appreciated
