    - error code During the boot-up sequence, I receive the error message Unable to initialize 2000017 (I may not have the exact number of zeros...)     - xp crashes every time I insert a dvd or cd Every time I insert a DVD or CD my computer srashes to blue screen. I have recorded the error codes and they vary every time it crashes.     - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned I just purchased a Magellan 4250 GPS, when I connected it to my systems I get a "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned" or something like that. I get this on my Avertec 2370 laptop both when I connect it to one of the USB port on the laptop and to a powered USB hub. I then went downstairs to my Dell Precision 390 and connect it to the USB port (actually to both) and get the same error. Both system are running XP Pro. I assumed that I had a defective GPS. Took it to work where I have a HP Kayak running Windows 2000 where I have installed a USB 2.0 / Firewire PCI card (since computer only had USB 1.1 support). Plugged the GPS into one of the USB ports, came up like a champ. Now I am confused, what should be my next step. I could always do my custom POI update here at work, It is just unsettling to have two very diverse systems (ok, they have same OS) have the same error. Tag: IDE ATAPI missing Tag: 329366

    - How hard to run BOINC? Are there any guidelines about how hard a CPU can be run and for how long and/or how to tell if a CPU is overheating? The other day, I downloaded BOINC to run on an old laptop that I mostly use for testing shareware. It's an HP Omnibook 6000. BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) is the software that allows various compute-intensive projects such as SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) to ships small pieces of the computations out to PCs around the world to sop up their idle cycles. (Probably everyone already knew that.) BOINC allows me to set various parameters that control how much of my PCs resources it will use. One parameter controls the percentage of the processor. I can set it from 10% to 100% in 10% increments. It looks like BOINC achieves the throttling back by starting and stopping the calculations. The Task Manager Performence graph is kinda fun to watch. Each little grid on the graph appears to be about 5 seconds wide. BOINC completes about two cycles each grid. I have done a little testing at various settings. At 100%, the fan comes on tight away and runs continuously. The bottom of the laptop gets fairly hot to the touch -- not so hot that I can't stand it, but close. At 90% & 80%, the fan comes on and runs continuously, but the laptop doesn't feel quire as hot. At 70%, the fan is on almost all the time. It occasionally shuts off for a few seconds. I just tested it and it did not shut off at all for 10 minutes. At 60%, the fan is on about 90% of the time. At 50%, the fan is on about 65% of the time and the laptop is cooler to the touch. At 40%, the fan is on about 30% of the time. At 30%, the fan comes on occasionally for a few seconds. At 20% and 10%, the fan never comes on. Is it safe to run BOINC continuously (24/7) at 100%? If not, what is the highest level that can I run it continuously without damaging the processor? Would it be better to measure the actual processor temperature?     - Hard Drive does not get an assigned letter???? I have noticed that this question has been asked a few times, but I can't find a solution that works. I had two hard drives in my computer that functioned properly before my master drive (C:) became corrupted and I needed to format and reinstall the OS (Win XP Home). I saved everything I needed to my slave drive (D:). I have since reinstalled everything onto my master drive (with the slave still installed, this may have been a no-no) and now 'My Computer', or 'Explorer' will not recognize the drive nor assign it a drive letter. Disk Manager sees the drive just fine but will not allow me to change the drive letter (change drive letter is grayed out). Device manager also recognizes the drive and both utilities say everything is fine. Now........originally the master drive had Norton Go Back running, and it probably left some traces of itself on the secondary drive. Problem is I cannot remove anything from the secondary drive now because I can't see it. I did not uninstall Go Back before I formatted the master drive because I did not realize that it was a problem and I have not reinstalled Go Back on my reformatted master drive. The main drive is a Maxtor PATA 40GB drive and the slave drive is a Western Digital PATA 40GB drive Are there any solutions I haven't seen?? Tag: IDE ATAPI missing Tag: 329332

    - Sony DRX-840U DVD/CD rewritable drive problems When using DLA to write DVDs, the computer crashes when either the "Make compatible" option is chosen, the "Eject" option is chosen or the eject button is touched. The strange thing is that this event (and two similar ones) were generated overnight while the drive was not used at all. It was plugged in and switched on and there was an Explorer window open on the root folder but the disc was not being used for any reading or writing at all. Neither drive have a windows page file - so it must be ordinaryaccess to the drives causing the warnings to pop up. I have looked at the MSKB article relating to this warning and have even taken the time to decode the error blocks (establishing that both drives generate the warning for read and write actions a number of times a day, the situation is resolved with a retry - only one retry seems to be required). The block above (first byte Ox04) is about writing to the disk - why would Windows be writing to a disk when none of the files on the disk were in use - and certainly not for writing? Could this be to do with the drives automatically going in to powersaving mode and taking a while to wake up when a request is sent?     - XP Home cannot find cd Drive I have XP Home Evesham Laptop and i believe a Sony cd drive ( i can no longer find any reference to it in my laptop). This drive is not being recognised and thus cannot use any cd/dvd. I used the fix for cd drive when cd burning is removed as I had recently uninstalled Itunes and although this worked for 2 days it has now disappeared again and the fix is no longer working when i try it again.     - Right-clicking several songs to play, freezes system Whe I right-click one song to play it takes about six seconds to start Player 11. On more selected songs right-clicking takes much longer to show dropdown menu to the point where the command just freezes the system. But, selecting many songs with the mouse and then pressing ENTER on keyboard opens Player and plays them right away. Tried different mice, re-installed drivers but no change.     - Create unallocated space Hi, I've reformatted my system and all is fine. After installing XP Home, applications and drivers I installed Xpress Recovery 2 from the gigabyte chipset disk. I then tried to back-up my system using XR2 which notified me of insufficient HD space. I've since learnt that I must have appx 4gb of unallocated space to use XR2.     - Help Needed for CD Burner Hi all. I'm running into problems with my CD-RW. Here's my specs: Athlon 900 MHZ 512M Ram Voodoo3 2k Sound Blaster Live!Value FIC mobo IBM 20 gig HDD (Primary C:) Maxtor 2gig HDD (Slave D:) Sony CD-ROM (Primary Secondary E:) Samsung SW-408B v.BS02 (F:) Windows XP Home SP2 I know it's an old system but it's all I got. The problem I'm having is with the Samsung. Everytime I try to burn a disc in the middle of writing it reboots the system. Also in the middle of xfering files from the Samsung to the hard drive it reboots. I don't think the CD-RW is faulty because I recently reformatted and put Windows 98 (using EZ CD Creator 4) and it works flawlessly. Is there a way (updated driver perhaps?) that I can fix this? I really don't want to use Win98 as it's very flaky for me. Would appreciate any help anyone can provide as I've been trying to find a solution to this problem for awhile now!     - Need updated driver for CD drive... Hope this is the right place for help with this problem. I have a Dell 620 Latitude laptop. It came with Vista Ultimate. Several work related programs weren't Vista compatible so I pulled the original hard drive with the Vista install intact and I replaced it with a new hard drive on to which I installed WinXP Pro. Recently I've been trying to get Magic Jack to work with the laptop. If I plug the Vista hard drive back in MJ works fine. With the WinXP install...no joy. The MJ adapter won't talk nicely to any of the USB ports. In doing some research I read a post that mentioned the MJ adapter uses the same driver as the CD/RW drive. I plugged the Vista hard drive back in and sure enough, with MJ mounted the driver is the very same as the driver for the Sony DWQ-58A DVD-CD drive. In my WinXP installation the driver for the CD drive is dated mid 2001. I'm trying to find an updated version but have so far struck out.     - What hardware do I need for this network? Hi, First of all, if you think this post belongs in another group then please let me know, I really need help with this! We will have 10 XP Home PCs and a network printer at work. Currently, we just have a 6 port switch where 5 PCs connect to one that acts as the gateway for the internet and the printer. The broadband is BT Business ADSL. What I want to do is have a wireless router so our 2 laptops can connect as well. Am I right to assume that if I buy an ADSL Wireless 4 port Router, I can connect 3 PCs directly to the router and the other port can be connected to the 6 port switch? I am a bit of a novice when it comes to switches and routers. If you can recommend a plan then that would be fantastic. We want to keep costs down as well which is why we are sticking with XP Home and not getting a server. Thanks for your attention and any advice you can give me.     - Laptop won't boot. I have a Tiny N18 laptop that won't boot from the hard drive. The bios messages appear, drive light flickers then black screen and NO activity. The bios recognizes the drive OK. I can boot from CD and I've run chkdsk on the drive and it appears to be OK, also run fixboot and fixmbr with no difference. I then did repair using XP CD reinstalling windows with no joy. Booted using Ultimate Boot CD for Windows and everything works fine. Checked drive and no viruses. It just refuses to boot. The problem which we face now is that once in 3-4 days its giving a single line blue screen error message as System halted due to hardware failure. and the entire system gets struck. We check out the event log of the OS , but there is no clue from the Operating System. Is it related to RAM failure or some other hardware failure. In MS support doc also they don't have mentioned anything regarding this error message. If anyone can put some light over this issue will be greatly appreciated. Some configuration note: 1.     - Game controller doesn't work anymore Hi, My friends and I are always playing games on my computer, and two of us have game controllers that we plug in via USB. They've worked great and all, but one day my friend's stopped working. Mine still works and is the same brand, but only a model higher. Whenever I plug his in, I don't get any do-do sound or anything. The controller works fine on his computer. I tried my other USB ports, and it didn't work, except for the third one worked once. It started to install it, then it said "Your new hardware failed to install". His controller installed on it's own the first time I plugged it in, and it didn't come with a hardware disc. I've also tried downloading the drivers again for it and installing them, and nothing changed. One day it randomly worked for about 5 minutes. I dunno how that happened. I've checked the Device Manager, and it doesn't appear on the list. When I go to the Game Controllers option in the control panel and try to add a joystick it says: "Your Gameport or Gameport drivers are not properly configured. Please consult the Device Manager."     - Fan goes turbo the moment I turn on computer Dell Dimension 8200. Been a nice quiet computer for 6 years. The control light is permanently on but the drive can't be opened (neither on the drive itself nor via driveletter rightclick - eject). No DVD is in the drive. Before this problem started I noticed that during boot my Sata HDD is only listed as '1: ' (not as it used to be when I still had IDE where the drive was listed by it's number, like ST xxxxxxx), listed as '2: ' was the Pioneer DVR 112 (Pata) but the Asus DVD RW was not listed at all. It did exist in Device Manager though and worked OK until an hour ago. Are there things to consider with this configuration that I may not have considered (being completely new to the wonderful world of SATA - and PATA for that matter)? I have installed a non bluetooth wireless mouse (Microsoft Wifeless Laser Mouse 6000) sucessfully. Have also sucessfully installed the Bluetooth mouse and keyboard onto another PC, so the hardware is good.     - Used space on hard drive Hi, Vista Home Premium, 1.8g processor with 1g RAM, Packard Bell machine in England. If I go 'Computer' I get the usual list of 'C drive', 'DVD drive' etc. If I right click the C drive, properties, it tells me that I have 75gig used. If I then open the C drive folder and get the list of what's in it, Program Files, Users, Temp etc and highlight all of the contents, right click them and select 'Properties' again it tells me that I have 17.5gig used which I think is about right. I know for sure that I don't have 75gig used, but the machine is telling me that I have. I've put lots of massive video files (45g plus) onto the machine from DV camcorders and also from ripped DVD's but all these have been deleted. I usually edit these files as necessary then transfer them to one of three external hard drives, then delete them from the machine. I use Webroot Window Washer to 'wash' the hard drive. I've done everything that I know, defragging, virus checking (Norton), spyware checking (AVG), washing empty space with Window Washer but it still tells me I have 75gig used. Ay ideas? TIA, Alan.     - Problem with my AMD Phenom 9600 and XP Hello Everyone! I recently bought myself a Amd Phenom 9600 processor and after i installed it i reinstalled windows xp but the thing is that when i reinstalled xp it was hung up on "34 minutes remaining" for about 30 min (when it installs the HW before you type in your serialnumber and such). Ok, it tought this was just something with the installer and the phenom processor but when i rebooted my computer it took around 30 minutes there too and it does everytime i try to reboot it. How do you determine when you need to add more RAM chips or a Video card? This PRESARIO S5100NX has 512RAM with onboard Video. The taskmgr shows Physical Memory: 515608. When watching VIDEO on IE 7.x the Available memory gets down to 65000. If I buy more hardware, Video Card with 256MB and more RAM; 1024 that should help it. But my main question is by watching TaskMgr how do you know when the Memory is used up so much you need to buy more RAM?     - Keyboard special keys work until new hardware is found Been trying to get my new MS wireless laser keyboard 6000 v2.0 working completely. The old standard keys all work. But the new ones like volume control do not. The latest thing I've found is that if I go into device manager and uninstall the two HID Non-User Input Data Filters and one USB Human Interface Device and the reboot, the volume control key works at first. After a new hardware found message. While it works I hear disk activity. Then I get the message that new hardware has been found and the volume control indicator on the screen fades away and will not return. Does this make any sense to you?     - How to assign drive letter Hi, I recently re-installed windows XP and my internal slave drive does not show up in Explorer. I was told assigning a drive letter should fix this problem. I opened the Disk Management tool and see the drive - shows it is "healthy" and "active", but when I select it the option "change drive letter and assign paths" is not selectable. Also it does not indicate what filesystem it is and the drive size is ~190G compared to the actual size of 320G. Appreciate any help on how to fix this.
