    - Folder Templates Always Display File Information as Type Music At some point in the past the Documents, Pictures, and Photo Album folder type templates for my Windows XP operating system were modified such that the default file attributes normally displayed (e.g. Name, Size, Type, and Date Modified for the Documents template) have been replaced by the those attributes normally reserved for the Music folder type template (i.e. Name, Size, Type, Artist, Album Title, Year, Track Number, and Duration). The File & Folder Common Tasks in the left pane display normally - appropriately reflecting the tasks associated with the particular folder type template in use. Modifying the folder type template using the Customize function changes the left pane Common Tasks display appropriately for the selected folder type but in each case the default file attributes for the Music folder type remain in effect. It is also noteworthy that this problem applies to all folders on my system. While I am not entirely certain it seems to me I first noticed this behavior shortly after I installed iPod and iTunes software on my PC. In any case I suspect that one or more registry errors may be responsible for my problem. I've found references to similar but not precisely identical behavior on the Web but nothing that addresses my specific problem nor an real solutions in any case.     - Changing the Windows Explorer View to 'List' via Registry Change Hello, Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2, Windows 2003 AD Domain in Windows 2000 mode. I've written a script that changes the windows explorer view to 'list'. It works by writing values to the 'Streams' key in HKCU and seems to work fine when I run this as an administrator. Standard Users do not have access to the Tools-> Options in Windows Explorer (disabled via Group Policy) However, when I login as a non-administrator, the view is still 'icons'. I have written a second script to interrogate the registry to verify that the changes that I made had been written successfully - they had. Given that the non-administrator user has group policy settings applied to them, would this be the reason why my registry changes are not taking effect? As far as I can tell, there is no mention of the 'Streams' key in the ADM files that are applied to the client/user. The following policies are applied to Windows Explorer and seem to update HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer Do not track shell shortcuts during roaming Hide these drives in My Computer Hide Manage on Explorer contect menu No 'Computers Near Me' in Network Places No 'Entire Network' in Network Places Prevent access to these drives in My Computer Remove DFS, Hardware Tabs Remove Search Remove UI to change Keyboard navigation indicator and menu animation settings Remove Folder Options on tools Turn on Classic Shell I have performed a test and updated my scripts to write to the 'Policies' Key (by adding the user to an administrative group). The results were that the registry entries were created, but again, no change was made in Windows Explorer Also I could not find a policy that defined the Windows Explorer view, otherwise I would have used that as a method of setting the view for the user. I've included below the script that modifies the registry - It does a check for XP or 2000 as we have both clients in our environment. Any help would be appreicated either in suggesting an alternative method of changing the explorer view, or suggestions why the registry changes are not being 'read' or 'applied' by users who have the GPO's applied.     - Deleting directories containing junctions ? Is there some flag or something to prevent XP from deleting the *content* of directories that are linked to by means of a junction? I just had to learn the hard way, that when I delete a directory that contains a junction to some other directory then XP will not just delete the junction but actually the entire content of the target directory, too.     - User accounts I have an original account under users. I tried to install a program and an error message popped up telling me it could not process the application and it could not find the mandatory desktop service. It seems that the Computer Administrator Files have been corrupted. I set up another account and it works perfectly. I have 2 questions, first, if I delete the original account will I lose any data or programs that are installed.     - XP visual style vs. SetWindowRgn I have a MFC application that I want the frame window to have a custom window region, but I still want to keep the Windows XP visual style. I found this Microsoft article Enabling Visual Styles http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb773175(VS.85).aspx saying that if you applied a non-NULL region by SetWindowRgn, UxTheme manager will assume this as a specialized window and will not use visual style.     - New hotkey assignments I'm using XP Home w/IE7 and Media Edition w/IE6 on different computers. Both have SP2. I'd like to be able to set up a global hotkey combination to mute/unmute the systems' SigmaTel volumes, and maybe 2 more for +- level control. Is this possible, and does anyone know how?     - Extract all... does not work any more... When one right-clicks on .zip files, Win XP offers an "Extract all..." option to unpack the file. This worked perfectly until a few days ago, but today I had to learn that for some strange reason this stopped working on my system. If I select that option then simply nothing happens...     - Compressed Folders Extraction Wizard - don't show extracted files by default Using XPs native zip extraction with a right-click, the final screen defaults to "Show Extracted Files". More often than not, I don't want this and remove the tick (check) from the box before clicking on "Finish". Next time, it reverts to inserting the tick for me. Does anyone know of a way of changing the default to the box being unticked - viz, I'd have to put the tick *in* the box to get the extracted files shown? It's only a click, I know, and a minor issue, but nonetheless is an irritant!     - Can't change file association for DOS batch files I am running Windows XP Home. The other day I went into the file associations page of Explorer / Tools and changed the file association setting for editing batch files from the default Notepad to my favored editor EditPad Pro. Today, when I tried to run a bach file, instead of it running, it opened in EditPad Pro.     - Dual boot activate on press key Hi, My PC has two partitions. 1-XP pro, 2-DOS. I create a dual boot (XP and DOS). The DOS partition is only for use to recover if a crash occurs on the XP partition. I use ghost.exe. But at each boot, a menu appears for select the boot partition.     - Internet Domains A part of the Registry keeps filling up with domains.     - help for problem RUNDLL; how can i deal with it?? Dear all, I was tried to update my Windows XP today. I found i have the hardware, Creative - Sound - SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio, and i found i have this hardware!! Therefore, i used the customised update in the microsoft.com, with all other updates. When the process is to the updating of the Creative - Sound - SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio item, a dialog box is shown and then a blue screen is flashed for half second, and it restarted by itself.     - Desktop icons won't change and can't remove file I placed a link on my desktop from the web, now when not on the internet, it appears as a white box with a red x in it. I cannot remove it or select it. When on the internet, the actual picture ( a circuit diagram) appears, I assume from the link. Also, my icon wording has colored boxes around them which I cannot remove either. I tried making the selection "translucent" in the performance-visual options, but no go.     - Nero Uninstall Issue I had the Nero 8 Demo installed, but no longer have the original installation files. I now have the full blown licensed version of Nero 7 (which is actually Nero 7.9). I can't install the 7.9 version because the system detects a newer version (even though the newer version Demo period has expired). I can't uninstall version 8 because of some errors. How can I get version 8 off my machine so I can install version 7.9?     - Content Advisor settings for each user account? I have 4 user accounts: me, wife, 2 young kids. I want to use the IE7 Content Advisor to control the webpages and sites the kids will be restricted to. They are young enough not to be able to defeat the Advisor but can type enough to get into trouble. Question: Can I enable Content Advisor just for the kids user accounts? When I enable it now logged in as one of them and log off to log on as myself, the Content Advisor is also enabled under my user account. I am hoping the Advisor can be "inidividualized" for each user account just as the "favorites" are different for each user.     - Redirecting special folders for multiple users to one location. Windows XP sets up special folders (including the favourites folder) for each user in their area on the home computer. You can redirect them using Tweak UI. However, Tweak UI gives the following warning: "Carelessly changing your special folders may make your system unusable. For example, don't set two special folders equal to each other, or set a special folder equal to a system folder like the Fonts folder. Continue changing special folders?" I already read "How to redirect special folders in Windows XP?" (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/RedirectFolders.htm), but this article does not give an answer to the above mentioned warning. Questions: (1) Can you set up a shared special folder "favourites" where several users (separate logins under Windows XP) can have access to using the normal procedure in IE7 [e.g. add to Favorites Center]?     - Taskbar items greyed out Raised this a couple of months ago, with no solution. Happening fairly often now, so keen to find a fix. My minimised XP Home taskbar entries (whether folders or programs) are greyed out. Left-clicking does nothing. Right-clicking brings up the same menu you get when you click on an empty part of the taskbar (Toolbars, Cascade Windows, etc). So far, the only way I've found to recover is to reboot.     - Use Open App, Don't Open New File If you have Internet Explorer open, you are working in another app, and then click IE in the QuickLaunch, you get a second new window in IE. Is there a setting that would open the existing IE window/app rather than starting a new 2nd window? This is especially annoying when you want to use Hot Keys on a Microsoft keyboard.     - Possible XP bug I'm running XP MCE 2005 on a Dimension E520. Dual-core Pentium D, 1 GB RAM, 256 MB Geforce 7300 LE, SB X-Fi Xtreme Music, 2 internal SATA hard drives. I moved the location of my My Documents folder to the secondary hard drive. One day I was modifying the folder pictures and folder types for folders contained in my My Documents folder. After I applied the picture changes I changed the folder type and checked the box to apply the template to all subfolders. After applying this change and poking around a bit, I noticed that EVERY folder shown in thumbnail view on the second drive showed one picture (one of the ones I selected for the previous customizations) while EVERY folder on the primary drive shown in thumbnail view displayed another pic I used for the previous customizations. This was even applied several folder levels ABOVE the folders where I made the customizations, including the root of my C: drive. I did a LOT of searching around for a fix, or even just some documentation of this issue. The only thing I found suggested deleting ALL thumbs.db files off my system. I tried that to no avail. Then I had an idea...one of the pics was stored in 1 folder and 1 folder only so I searched my registry for the name of that file, deleted the 2-3 at the most entries for that file, and voila! problem gone. The Desktop tab does not appear in the Display Properties dialog box in Windows XP
