    - Icons Overlapping on Desktop and throughout computer I am running a Windows XP Home Edition and the icons on my desktop are overlapping. The icons are also overlapping throughout various areas, such as the control panel. I am running the English language and Korean language. How do I get this fixed. I have all of the latest updates from Microsoft, including SP2. I have a fix that Microsoft sent me and it does not work. It states that the newest version already exists.     - Need character remaped, not the key I need to enter a number of times in this form: HH:MM And I would like to use my USB numberpad with my notebook to do this. I would like to remap the number pad's "." key to be a ":" instead. I have KeyTweak, and also know other ways of remapping the KEY, but this would only do this mapping: Numpad "." ---> ";" (requiring the shift to gain the colon.) Is there any way for me to do this?     - System Tray doesn't open? Hello, I think it's called the System Tray (?) on the Task Bar and there used to be a button if you pointed & clicked on it it would open. Now, there is no button. I've looked into the Control Panel & re-checked all of my Taskbar Options & still cannot get that 'button' back. I especially need it because I use a Laptop & had the battery shown and now I don't know what % of power I have.     - Hide Notification Tray is Grayed Out I've been busy making mods after doing a re-install. My notification try on my task bar is getting kinda big. I'd like to have it take up less screen real estate. I looked up Windows help and followed the steps only to see Hide icons on Notification Tray to be grayed out.     - Modify selection of Default Printer We assign network printers to our computers. However, when a user logs on a computer for the first time, the Default Printer selected (by the OS?) is ALWAYS "Office Document Writer" (we use Office 2003 SP3). I need to change this automatic assignment to be ANYTHING else besides that, as, they always call us, when their stuff doesn't print to the network.     - TweakUI for XP Produces Registry Error I use TweakUI for XP SP 2, and I was having trouble keeping the folder settings. So, I opened the registry and looked at what TweakUI had entered. It was NOT the same as what Microsoft had recommended on their website. The numbers were correct and the placement were correct, BUT, where the correct way to have the entries is BagMRU Size, TweakUI has it entered it as Bag MRU Size - with a space inbetween the Bag and the MRU. After hand correcting this, my folders are now keeping their settings. Is there anyone else that has noticed this error, and if so, is there any way to advise Microsoft's TweakUI developers of this of this error in their program? Thanks!     - Customize Windows Explorer I made a change such that Explorer when double clicked would open on the C:\ Root Directory instead of the way it opens on My Documents when it ships. I think it was something adjusted in the registry. I forgot what it was that I did. I'm still recovering from a major melt down of my computer. I am installing everything fresh. I find that I'm doing lots with Explorer. So, I would like it to open on C:\. The way it is now, I have to do a round about path to C:\. Please, help me get there on first clicks.     - I can't make a picture my desktop background. Whenever I go to Properties>Desktop I see the different backgrounds to choose from. I can click on them and it will appear in the preview box just fine. However when I click "apply" or "OK" it just sets the background as the color selected under the "color" drop down menu.     - Copying User Profiles- Copy To button grayed out Windows XP with all updates I am having a problem copying a user profile. I researched the MS Knowledgebase and found article 314478 giving instructions for copying a user profile which says Click Start button, right click My Computer, click Properties, click Advanced Tab, Click Settings under User Profiles. Then click the Profile you want to Copy and then click Copy To. This where I have a problem. The Copy To button is grayed out on the Profile I am trying to copy. It is grayed out on some of my Profiles but not on others. I have tried- 1. Rebooting 2.     - Unread email notification icon on taskbar - removal. Hi, Windows displays an unread email notification 'envelope' icon on my taskbar - that is as opposed to Thunderbird's new email notification message which I've turned off. The Thunderbird forum informed me the envelope icon is a Windows icon which can be turned off by specifying 'always hide pm@nsfm.com has xx new messages'. However I don't like hiding 'inactive' icons - I like to see what's in my memory and find the 'show all' button fiddly. Furthermore... Tweak UI has a 'Show taskbar notification icons' setting but if I switch that off won't I then miss important notifications like my Firewall informing me of an update and such like? Perhaps there's a tweak somewhere (in the registry perhaps) that will allow me to permanently stop the unread email notification 'envelope' icon from appearing. I get a lot of email, and don't have the time to look at it all as it arrives, so the envelope icon is on my taskbar most of the time - I don't like it and I don't need to be told that I have unread email since I pretty much always have some unread email !!     - opening docs and URLs via DDE extremely slow - reason??? I am experiencing extremely slow (30-60 seconds!) opening of Office Documents and web pages when a document, or a link, resp. gets double-clicked. The delay is not present if an office app is started and the document is then opened from within (or by dragging the document into the application). Same with IE: if I start it and drag or paste the URL into the address field, it is openend "immediately". After some longish searching I found out that I can fix this by changing the file associations (or URL-HTTP association) from using DDE to not using DDE. But I would rather fix the obviously underlying problem with DDE itself! Any ideas/suggestions what to check, enable or fix to resolve this issue?     - Language bar won't quit showing up in toolbar? Hi, My son's and daughter's computer have different user accounts. Everytime they log in, there is that language bar icon in the toolbar.     - Xp toolbar problem Hi. Whenever I open any program (like Internet Explorer) a little icon never comes at the bottom in my toolbar. Its hard to explain. I have tried everything I can think of to make it only show the letters and not a color. I cannot figure it out, there is no transparency color selection on anything I can find in properties.     - Shortcuts to Device Manager and Services in Control Panel, How? Hi, Control Panel is a convenient and sensible place for Windows (XP, SP2) to store the various system utilities and dialogs. BUT 2 of the things I use most regulary, 'Device Manager' and 'Services', are started from either a secondary folder (Admin. Tools) or from the 'System' dialog's 'Hardware' tab -- how inconvenient !! Today after living with this inconvenience for many years I finally got around to creating 2 shortcuts in Control Panel, one for Device Manager and one for Services, only to find Control Panel won't let me add shortcuts. I've added shortcuts to them on my desktop which work fine, but I can neither add a shortcut nor copy one to Control Panel. On the desktop in fine in the short-term but can someone tell me how to add these shortcuts to Control Panel, which is, after all, their natural home. Many thanks. PS.     - System Tray Icons Hi, This may be the wrong group for this but its puzzling to say the least. I am trying to change an icon for an application which when running minimises itself to the system tray. The current icon is your standard 8bit 256 Colour ico file. I have duplicated this and everything looks fine, until windows actually loads it in the system tray. The icon looks all distorted and looks like you can see the individual pixcels. Windows is set to show 32bit colour. None of the other icons are affected.     - F Drive Settings/Folder Options Issue I have an WD 320g external hard drive that I use for storage of all of my files--pictures, videos, music, documents, etc. Recently I noticed a problem with maintaining the folder views that I have had set for years. My "pictures" folder had lost its filmstrip view all of a sudden. Well, I have since fixed that issue, but have noticed that very recently, the settings keep changing in a couple of my folders. Most specifically, my "pictures" folder and the main view into my F drive itself. (I don't know quite what to call it, but it's when I choose "my computer" and then double-click on MyBook F drive--the main window that comes up and lists all of the folders contained within my F drive.) Anyway, what would happen is that every time I changed the view on that main window, the views in "my pictures" would change as well. For instance, I want the main view to be "tiles" and the "my pictures" to be "filmstrip" but whenever I change one the other automatically changed. The one thing I noticed is that my F drive main window had a camera watermark down in the corner, signifying that it was set as a picture-type folder, but I did not set it that way. I went into the folder options and clicked the button to "reset all folders" and now when I double-click and open my F drive, the main page has a music note in the bottom signifying music files I guess. My question is this, how do I set my F drive to be just a normal all-types-of-files drive, like my C drive is? I never set it to be specific to one type of file, so how did it get caught up in being set that way? I've tried looking around, but since this isn't a normal folder to change the "customize" tab, I don't know how to tell the computer that I want this drive like my regular system hard drive, like it was before. I do notice that my external drive has an "autoplay" tab on it in the properties tab, which my C drive (main computer internal hard drive) does not.     - Why does it take so long until the system reacts to sleeping or hibernation request? My system recently developed a very nasty habit, namely that when I press the button to sleep or hibernate, it takes "forever" (i.e. up to 3 minutes!) until the system finally indeed goes asleep, or hiberates, resp. What is even more annoying is, that it apparently buffers multiple requests, i.e. if I "dare" to press sleep/hibernate again during that time, then - when I woke it up again - it will almost immediately sleep/hibernate again and this as often as I pressed the key. I recently had to wake it up 4 times, since I apparently pressed "hibernate" that often until if finally reacted. I find this whole behavior most infuriating! First: what could cause the system to take that long to react to a sleep/hibernate request? Ist there some "force"-option or some timeout that one can reduce, such that no app or driver is ever allowed to block a system's sleep/hibernation sequence for more than, say, 5 seconds at most?     - Why does the Search dialog always take so long to appear??? When I right-click on a drive or directory and select "Search..." it always takes up to a minute (usually about 1/2 min.) until the search dialog finally shows up. I find this extremely annoying!     - Folder Icon change glitch Hi, I would like to change all of my folder icons to a new icon. I discovered there are 2 entries in the folder options/file types dialog and only one of them allows for changing the icon. I would like both to use the new icon. Additionally, when I changed the folder icon and clicked the box to have it apply to all sub-folders, it didn't apply it. Your help in fixing this is appreciated.     - Error Message 1913 When trying to Download Microsoft Updates, or Reinstall or Detect and Repair Microsoft Office 2003, or try to install Microsoft Office 2007, I recieve the following Error Message: "Error 1913: Setup Cannot update file C:\Windows\win.ini. Verify that the file exists in you system and that you have sufficient permissions to update it." When trying to work with Office 2003, or install Office 2007, the Install stops and the 1913 Error Message comes up at "File: Win.ini, Key: Mail, Item: CMCDLLNAME32, Value: mapi32.dll" The Problem only seems to occur when using Windows Installer with Microsoft Products. I can and have downloaded other products from the Internet with no problem. I have also tried using Safe Mode, as well as COMPLETLY Uninstalling Norton. I have sent a message to Microsoft, as well as finding a ton of Hot Fixes on their Web Site, but they all have disclaimers and I am a tad nervous about using them. I have also searched the Web and found this error all over it, but so far no real answers. Microsoft Office 2003 is also acting very weird, however I am afraid to uninstall it for fear I cannot install 2007 and will end up with neither.     - Search opens when selecting My Computer in Start Menu Customized Preference in XP set to: Start Menu -> My Computer -> Display as Menu When I left click on the C: drive in the "My Computer" menu, a search window opens instead of exploring the C: drive.     - 2 part question: Other name of SYSTRAY, & need BAT or SCRIPT Hello, I have a video game that will only run if I shut down all the SYSTRAY and EXPLORER.EXE processes, so I've been told by Tech Support. The first question is this: If you look at the running processes, what is the actual IMAGE NAME of SYSTRAY? I don't see anything in there that says SYSTRAY. As I said earlier, the only way to make the game run is to delete all of the process except the aforementioned two. As you can imagine, it is very tedious to sit there and delete all of the undesired processes one-by-one. So my second question is this: Is there a way to write a BAT file so that I can get only the above mentioned processes to load? If you have a better idea on how to approach this (instead of using a BAT file), like a script (or whatever), I'm all ears. I have ADMIN rights to this PC, also, FWIW.     - Windows Explorer Folder Icons I am sure this is somewhere within microsoft.com and perhaps the msdn network, but I have been looking for going on 4 hours now and have not found exactly what I am looking for. I know you can right click a folder and change its icon, however, the default icons use 2 - one for closed folder and one for opened folder. I assume it is in the registry somewhere. I didn't find any info on both states using the desktop.ini. How can I change the default folder icons to represent the 2 folder states, and perhaps even change the drive icons and so forth?     - Question about Folder Views My default view in windows classic folders is the list view; however when I use the detailed view I would like to establish a few options (like name, artist and duration only) every time I open a folder and use the detailed view.     - Desktop background - please help! Hi, I am having issues with my desktop background and could really use some advice. For a couple of months now I have been unable to change my background picture through display properties/desktop/browse (I am using Windows XP Home), but although baffling (it was fine one day, not working the next) it was not really a problem as I could right-click in explorer and then select "Set as desktop background". Now, however, this option is missing! It is still there when I right click a picture on a website, but not in explorer!     - 2 monitors - second not displaying correctly I tried to set up a second screen onto my laptop today using and S-video to scart lead into and LCD television. However, the quality on the television is now really bad when running Windows.     - Distribute "Regedit" Folder permissions Hello, I work at IT at my university and I need to employ a microsoft KB fix that requires me to go into REGEDIT and modify FOLDER PERMISSIONS on HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion \IniFileMappings\Control.ini per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/156677 Now, everytime I need to change a string on all the lab computers (around 300) I save my .reg file and run it on each individual PC as administrator. Is there something similar or a technique I can employ here to do what I need to do on the KB without much hassle on every computer (either manually doing it or redoing image are last resorts that I would like to avoid). As you will see as you go through the individual selections, some
settings are 'per user' only.

If you're looking for a more convenient way to apply settings globally I
suggest the Group Policy Editor.

Thanks... GPE only does some of the settings, others need registry
tweaks which I'm not keen on doing.
