    - Modify comdlg32.dll I used MultiEnhancer from http://www.netcult.ch/elmue/ElmueSoft-en.htm to tweak comdlg32.dll so my Open & Save-As dialog would open to my custom size and view. It will not work with versions of comdlg32 above 2180 (SP3 is 5512). I would like to modify the dll and the best way I can think of is to export the resources from 2180 and import them into 5512.     - Assigning Keyboard Keys Hello To ALL, This is my 1st time posting and I'm hope I word my question correctly so that you will understand it. The question I have sounds more and more rediculous everytime I think about it and procrastinating to submit the question on line is driving me crazy...so here goes.     - How to Change Pop-Up Menu Highlight Color In the menus that popup when you right click on your desktop, is there any way to change the color that highlights the text?     - Problem with XP settings or maybe the Microsoft intellipoint mouse Randomly, and I have no idea what triggers it, every window that is open on my computer shows up as a miniature window that allows me to select which window I want to bring up. It's not thumbnails, like the ones you get when you ALT+TAB to scroll through the open programs. Each one literally takes up about 25% of the screen. But it does it when I'm typing in word, or surfing the web, or anything else that I'm running. I don't know if it's in the intellimouse settings or somewhere in the way the views are set, but I can't seem to find a solution. Please help.     - How to nail down which program is stealing focus all the time? Since a few days I have a phenomen that starts driving me really nuts: Some program seems to steal the keyboard focus every minute or so. That means that while I am writing some text or email, again and again I am suddenly typing into "nirvana" until I realize, that the application *again* has lost its input focus. I then have to click with the mouse into its window again to reassign focus and then I have to retype the last couple of words. This is soooo distracting! I guess it must be some utility that runs in the background and regularly checks for something but I haven't been able to identify the culprit so far. Apparently it always runs so shortly that it doesn't show up in the task manager's top CPU list. Any idea, how I could list the last couple of processes that ran?     - Icon Transparent Icons Hiya folks! I promise that I have tried everything in this forum, and this i really frustrating me! I cant seem to get my desktop icons to have transparent background! Here is what I tried: 1. Tried enabling and disabling Active Desktop. 2. Tried the drop shadow setting in performance settings window. 3. The image I have in the background is a jpg image. 4. When I try the default Windows XP theme, the icons are also no appearing with transparent backgrounds. I think something is wrong with some hidden settings but I cant seem t figure it out!     - hibernate failing I have a dell inspiron 6000 laptop. recently re-installed OS due to hard disk problems. worked much better. I then added 2 GB of memory - upgrading from 500MB. when I try to hibernate - it fails reporting that there are not enough system resources to perform hibernate function ....     - Installing Software When installing new software, Windows has a bad habit of creating its desktop shortcuts and start menu folders to the all users account instead of just the current users account. I don't want any shortcuts or start menu folders from applications that I install to show up in any other user accounts, and vice versa. I just came form 98 about a moth ago and I didn't have this problem. Microsoft really dropped the ball on this one, it irritates me to no end; this completely defeats the whole purpose of having separate user accounts. How do I fix this?     - NUM Lock Quandry At the request of my boss I have trying to run a script that will keep the Num Lock on in XP. The idea is to set the registry key so that no matter what the Num Lock is when the user logs off it will always be on at logon. The script (below) is run as a logoff script that sets the value for Num Lock on when the user logs off. The script runs fine and places the number in the correct place in the registry but when the logon happens the Num Lock key is off if the user had the key off when logging off before the script runs. What is really frusturating is that the Num Lock key value is "on" after logon but the actual key is off. I am running the script to run synchronisly. Apparently XP is reading the Num Lock key after the logoff script is run. Running the script as logon script does not work either.     - Drives I have 320GB as drive 0 with XP installed. I split my old 80GB (Drive 1 Slave) into two partitions. One I want to put a another copy of XP for a dual boot, the other half will be for backups. I tried the software that came with the newer 320GB drive and after the disk-to-disk copy it failed.     - A Few Group Policy Questions Hi everyone, I have an XP Pro SP2 machine that will be shared by several family members and I have a few questions about Group Policies. Active Directory is not involved here. In the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) I want to turn off IE's prompt to download ActiveX Controls. The setting for this is at: User Configuration Administrative Templates Windows Components Internet Explorer Security Features Restrict ActiveX Install Internet Explorer Process = Enabled After setting this policy I log off and then log back on but I am still able to download an ActiveX component (Acrobate Reader, for example). It seems the GP setting is not taking affect. Any ideas why? A follow up question is this: My understanding is that, contrary to the name, "User Configuration" policies apply to *all* users, not individual users. So, setting the poilicy for one user account affects *all* accounts on the machine. If this is true, why does the Group Policy editor have separate sections for "User Configuration" and "System Configuration"? Perhaps it *is* possible to specify separate policies for different accounts. This is ultimately what I want to do. I have an idea on how to do this (by copying .pol files and invoking gpupdate.exe) but the fact that ActiveX installations cannot be turned off is stopping me dead in my tracks.     - Creating a custom pop up window I would like to know how to create a simple pop up window within the windows environment, regardless of whatever application is open. For example, if I am shutting down my computer, I'd like to create a reminder pop up to back up my work. Similarly, at the end of the day, I'd like to create a pop up reminder to update my billing sheet (I work out of my home office).     - SFC exe Is it safe to run the SFC.exe on a XP SP2 (Home) machine that has had all of the updates added over it's life time (6 years) without replacing an updated file with an older original XP file form the original disc? I get a missing file error when I open Spy-Bot Search & Destroy after many years of no problems. It still opens and runs correctly though.     - Deleting User Accounts And Files I had to recreate a user account. The original account deleted, but the files are still on the computer. After creating the new account, I tried to delete the files, but it would not let me. Recreating the account did not create any new settings, it just brought back the old settings, such as my IE home page, user account picture. The files are in the Documents and Settings folder. Before I recreated the new account, I tried to delete the files and it would not let me. Any ideas on how I can delete the files and leave it as six user account folders, instead of nine? I have been forced to change from "Windows Classic Style" to "Windows XP Style" (in order to get the orange mark on Todays's date in the Monthly Calendar view in ms Outlook2003). But I HATE the default overly-blue colours that Windows XP Style defaults to. I have tried the two other colour schemes that come with WindowXP (i.e. Silver and Olive Green) but how can I get a new/different colour scheme uploaded?     - SyncToy Hi all, great group, this. Hope I am not off topic. I find the XP SyncToy one of the most useful tools EVER. But... Query 1: is it possible to select/unselect groups of subfolders all in one go by clicking on the topmost (contaning) folder, rather than tediously having to click on each individual subfolder? Query 2: can you tell the program to ignore single files (ie the SyncToy data files)? Query 3: finally, why does SyncToy keep reproducing all the hundreds of folders which are unselected in the origin AND destination list of folders to sync?     - Capture LPT1 to a USB printer Anyone have a way to make a USB printer capture the LPT1 port? I have a DOS program that will only print to a parallel port.     - Adjusting start menu startup I am trying to manipulate the startup menu to execute a program.     - Folder Templates Always Display File Information as Type Music At some point in the past the Documents, Pictures, and Photo Album folder type templates for my Windows XP operating system were modified such that the default file attributes normally displayed (e.g. Name, Size, Type, and Date Modified for the Documents template) have been replaced by the those attributes normally reserved for the Music folder type template (i.e. Name, Size, Type, Artist, Album Title, Year, Track Number, and Duration). The File & Folder Common Tasks in the left pane display normally - appropriately reflecting the tasks associated with the particular folder type template in use. Modifying the folder type template using the Customize function changes the left pane Common Tasks display appropriately for the selected folder type but in each case the default file attributes for the Music folder type remain in effect. It is also noteworthy that this problem applies to all folders on my system. While I am not entirely certain it seems to me I first noticed this behavior shortly after I installed iPod and iTunes software on my PC. In any case I suspect that one or more registry errors may be responsible for my problem. I've found references to similar but not precisely identical behavior on the Web but nothing that addresses my specific problem nor an real solutions in any case.     - Changing the Windows Explorer View to 'List' via Registry Change Hello, Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2, Windows 2003 AD Domain in Windows 2000 mode. I've written a script that changes the windows explorer view to 'list'. It works by writing values to the 'Streams' key in HKCU and seems to work fine when I run this as an administrator. Standard Users do not have access to the Tools-> Options in Windows Explorer (disabled via Group Policy) However, when I login as a non-administrator, the view is still 'icons'. I have written a second script to interrogate the registry to verify that the changes that I made had been written successfully - they had. Given that the non-administrator user has group policy settings applied to them, would this be the reason why my registry changes are not taking effect? As far as I can tell, there is no mention of the 'Streams' key in the ADM files that are applied to the client/user. The following policies are applied to Windows Explorer and seem to update HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer Do not track shell shortcuts during roaming Hide these drives in My Computer Hide Manage on Explorer contect menu No 'Computers Near Me' in Network Places No 'Entire Network' in Network Places Prevent access to these drives in My Computer Remove DFS, Hardware Tabs Remove Search Remove UI to change Keyboard navigation indicator and menu animation settings Remove Folder Options on tools Turn on Classic Shell I have performed a test and updated my scripts to write to the 'Policies' Key (by adding the user to an administrative group). The results were that the registry entries were created, but again, no change was made in Windows Explorer Also I could not find a policy that defined the Windows Explorer view, otherwise I would have used that as a method of setting the view for the user. My applications insist on opening Save As > My Pictures (and Save As >
My Videos) in Thumbnail view. As these folders contain scores of
subfolders I want to browse quickly, that's not appropriate for me. Is
it possible to change this behaviour please? IOW, open these 'special'
folders like all my others, in LIST view?
