    - Theme Not Installing? I recently re-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 onto my Dell XPS M140. I had previously had a Final Fantasy theme installed, mainly for the mouse and sounds because I have Windows Blinds for the rest. I just recently tried to install it again but nothing happens. It says it's installed, but the sounds aren't set, the mouse remains the same, and my screensaver doesn't change. Does anyone here know why this might be happening?     - configure windows explorer XP Pro How can I configure WE in XP Pro, so that it shows two panes- left- hand for showing tree-structure of drives and folders and right-hand for showing folders and files? I can configure WE by View-> Explorer Bar and select the Folders option, but I cannot save that configuration. When I close and reopen WE, it shows just the single pane view. :( If it helps, the computer is a PowerSpec from Microcenter....     - Windows Loading Lag When I am loading Windows XP Pro, the blue screen that says "Windows is starting up . . ." and "Loading Your Personal Settings . . ." takes a very long time. By that, I mean the first screen takes 6-7 minutes to switch to the sedond one which takes another 2-3 minutes before my desktop finally starts to load. What would cause this and how do I fix it?     - Thumbnail View not working with video files I just recently built a new computer and installed Windows XP 64bit SP2. One of the problems I am having is that I liked being able to see thumbnails of my video files whether they be .avi, .mkv, .ogm, or .mp4. Though after transferring over all of my files I noticed that only a few .avi would still show a picture, but not all of them and especially none of the other formats. I am wondering if anyone might have a way to get around this problem since I never had it with 32bit windows. To give some basic info running 64bit XP with 4GB of ram, have WMP 10 installed by default, but use Combined Community Codec Package to watch my video files.     - Some programs start with big delay... What could cause this? I have an effect here, that starts driving me nuts: the startup of certain programs is reproducibly delayed by about 30 seconds during which the system does apparently "nothing" (i.e. it hangs or waits for something but there is no CPU or disk activity), and only after that time the program starts up. What's esp. annoying is, that it is blocking the program that has triggered the firing up of an application during that period, not the application BEING fired up. What I want to say with this is: I e.g. click on a link in some mail in Outlook (or a link in any other program). Outlook goes non-reactive for about 30 seconds after which IE is finally started up and opens the referenced webpage. Same if I click on URLs in other programs. Or I click on a file in Explorer. Explorer (and with it the entire system's UI) hangs for said 30 seconds or so and only THEN finally the application corresponding to the filetype (e.g. a text editor or Adobe Reader or whatever) starts up and loads the file I clicked on. Strange enough starting the same programs that show such delays via a desktop icon or the start menu works "immediately" - no delay. So it is e.g. faster to copy a URL from a mail, fire up IE using the desktop icon and pasting it into the address field. If I simply doubleclick the URL, it will fire up only after half a minute. Or I can fire up my favorite text editor, it comes up immediately and I can drag the file icon from explorer into the editor and it immediately loads the file and opens it. If I doubleclick the file's icon in Explorer it takes forever until the editor comes up and displays that file (and Explorer is blocked during that time). I haven't really figured out the "pattern" behind this effect, yet.Originally I observed this for URLs only and I thought it was an Internet Explorer problem, but in the meantime I experienced this with all kinds of other applications as well. The only common denominator I see, is that the delays seem to happen always then, when the system has to determine which application it shold start based on a given filename or URL (or MIME-type). Could it be that the mechanism that derives the application responsible for a given file- or MIME-type could be the problem here? Does that ring a bell with someone?     - Disable AVI Duration and Dimensions from displaying. To disable XP from displaying the Dimensions, Duration etc of AVI files, I found this little trick on the inter-web: Regsvr32 / u shmedia.dll. Before I go off and do something stupid, does anyone know if this is a safe practice? The reason I ask is that in several folders I have quite a few AVI files and Explorer is painfully slow at displaying the folder contents. I realize that I can do this on a folder by folder basis (View -> Chose Details etc), the problem here is that one must wait until Explorer has finished - kinda defeats the purpose me thinks.     - Is my display in power saving mode? After a certain period of inactivity my system puts my display into power saving mode. Is there any way for a program running on my system to know that this has happened? Presumably Windows knows, since it put the display in power saving mode in the first place. But perhaps it doesn't record this fact anywhere. It is one of the conditions that guarantees there is no sentient being at the controls, so applications that normally run in the background can start hogging resources normally reserved for humans.     - How to force XP to memorize view options? My XP constantly forgets the view settings of certain folders. I have defined Details-view as default for my system but certain special folders, like "My Computer" or "Control Panel" I prefer to see in icon view. However, each time I open any of these, they are shown in Details-mode again and I have to change the view mode AGAIN! Grrr! How can I convince this darn XP to memorize these settings?     - Cannot open any .cpl files This computer is running Windows XP Home SP2. When I right click on the desktop and select Properties I receive the following pop-up message: Window Title: RUNDLL Message: Error in setupapi.dll Missing entry:s When I open up Control Panel I can see all the icons, but double clicking on any of them result in the same pop-up message described above. Also, trying to open the .cpl (like desk.cpl) files from the run command also reslut in the pop-up message. The setupapi.dll file does exist in the Syste32 directory, and I've replaced it. I also ran sfc /scannow, which did not find any corrupted files. I've tried various troubleshooting steps found on the web but nothing has worked. I get the same pop-up message when I boot into Safe Mode, even when logged in as a different user. Any help would be greatly appreciated.     - Strange Network Observation Sometimes when I'm viewing my network through Windows Explorer, I can see the Icon "Entire Network" therefore letting me see everything. On occasions, lately, the "Entire Network" is missing. Why does this happen? 2nd Question: I have a folder labeled "Public Write" which I share across my home network. This is there for my kids to send documents to my computer. I can review and send back to them. For what ever reason, all of the sudden other computer cannot get to the Public Write folder. The only change to my system, that I can think of, is the installation of Symantec Norton Anti-Virus (2007) which I installed. I've noticed that it has the Internet Worm Protection. But when I turn that off, you still can't get to my Public Write folder that is shared. So I'm not absolutely convinced that the Norton is causing the share issue or not.     - XP Pro - IE v7 - icon change on desktop shortcuts not working I've recently upgraded to XP-Pro and IE v7 browser. I can no longer change the icons on my desktop url shortcuts. They all show the v7 browser icon. Even if I move them to a folder on my desktop, they still display the v7 browser icon. The option is available to allow me to "change" or attach a different icon, but it just blinks and the v7 IE icon remains, no change! Is anyone else able to change these icons?     - Active Desktop scheduled syncronization issue I'm trying to add a scheduled update for my active desktop link (http://images.intellicast.com/WeatherImg/RadarLoop/spi_None_anim.gif) and every time I open the Schedule tab to view the previously scheduled syncronization, that schedule has disappeared and I end up looking at a blank scheduled synchronizaiton list. In the past I've been able to configure this active desktop scheduled update to run every 5 minutes in order to update any changes in the midwest weather radar map. I've been unable to figure out why my scheduled active desktop update keeps disappearing. I'm using Windows XP Professional with IE7 Any help would be greatly appreciated.     - Icon text background not transparent Hi everyone, I've tried everything I can think of and nothing seems to work to make the background behind the icon desktop icons text transparent. I have gone to System Properties > Advanced > Performance Settings >Visual Effects and checked "use drop shadows for icon labels". I have made sure that "Lock Web Items on Desktop" is not checked on Desktop properties under Arrange By ... I have also gone to the Desktop tap under Desktop properties and clicked on the Customize button and then on the Web tab I made sure there are no checkmarks in that window.     - Desktop Background Listbox problem..... When I right click on my XP Pro SP2 desktop and select Properties>Desktop the Background listbox doesn't just list the files in %SystemRoot%/Web/Wallpaper. It lists those plus every bmp file in the My Pictures folder and sub folders. I searched the registry for "wallpaper" and found that HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion's WallpaperDir setting was in fact set to %SystemRoot%/Web/Wallpaper. So I dno't get where the other files are coming from. The problem here is that this is a new build and I haven't even started to put in my THOUSANDS of images into My Pictures yet. When I do, if this behavior persists, it will most likely freeze my Display properties dialog and make picking out wallpaper form the thousands of images that I have quite messy if not downright impossible.     - Changing a font name Here's my problem. I loaded a font called "Times and Times Again". The font is an old fashed looking times style font. The problem is that when I display web pages that use the "Times" font as the first in the font-family list, the OS confuses that with the "Times and Times Again" font and it looks wonky. As I really like using the "Times and Times Again" font when journaling heritage scrapbook pages, I don't really want to remove it. It will allow word and excel integration if office 2000 pro is installed first then MYOB. I have the product key and heavily damaged original CD. the backup copy of the office 2000 pro is also corrupted. Once the office 2000 pro and MYOB installed and opened, office 2003 can be used to upgrade and still allow MYOB retain full office and excel integration I also have the media and product key of office xp pro. It appears from registry on teh legacy machine, it may also work with excel 97 and word 97 also Is there any safe way to obtain a clean copy of office 2000 install CD or files?     - Computer reboots on shortcut key Hi, I've had a "hot-key" assigned to a spreadsheet shortcut for a couple of years. Only recently it has begun shutting down the computer (force a re-boot) when I use this short-cut. The hotkey is CTRL-ALT-X and it's assigned to an Open-Office "calc" document (XLS spreadsheet). It usually happens when I have a number of windows open. The re-boot does not pause and ask me to close programs or save information, it's rather instantaneous. Normally, XP (pro)'s shutdown is takes quite a while (seems longer and longer after every windows update, as do my boot-ups).     - Problem Installing USB Mice on MY HP L2000 Laptop I have a HP L2005CO running XP SP2. I am unable to Install Any kind of an External Mouse. Triewd my MS Wheel Mouse & Optical USB & PS/2 Compatible that was running on my Dual Boot Dell [WinME & XP SP1]. Then I tried A Logitech LX7 which wouldn't work so it Got retruned. We Them Purchased a HP EW207AA Wireless but it Fails them same way as the Others did. I get the message that says and I quote Cannot Install this Hardware There was a problem installing this Hardware HID-Compliant Mouse an Error occurred during the installation of the device The data is Invalid Close Quote When I go to control panel and check systems/hardware/device manager/mice and other pointing devices I see the Synaptics and an Unknown Device. If I try to Update Driver it does the same thing. What I need to find out is exactly what files/Drivers are being installed I check mouse.inf from Windows/Inf. But can't figure it out Been around the HORN several times with HP Techs but they don't seem to be able to grasp the Problem I'm hoping someone out there can provide some assistance. I have a custom icon I am using for an app in quick start and its background
is presently white, so it is showing as a square. I would like to make it
transparent for this purpose. which color do I need to make it (In RGB)

You don't set a color, you set the background to be transparent.

When I reduce the icon to 256 colors it ruins it, so I will leave it as is.
