    - Any Security Software On Boot? I am running Windows XP Home. I have a standalone laptop, no network. As of now, anyone can start my computer and get it. Windows XP Home has No login security! I cannot stop anyone from getting into my computer. I looked at www.download.com and could not find it. Is there any security software that prompts for a password for login OR AT BOOT?     - A Few Group Policy Questions Hi everyone, I have an XP Pro SP2 machine that will be shared by several family members and I have a few questions about Group Policies. Active Directory is not involved here. In the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) I want to turn off IE's prompt to download ActiveX Controls. The setting for this is at: User Configuration Administrative Templates Windows Components Internet Explorer Security Features Restrict ActiveX Install Internet Explorer Process = Enabled After setting this policy I log off and then log back on but I am still able to download an ActiveX component (Acrobate Reader, for example). It seems the GP setting is not taking affect. Any ideas why? A follow up question is this: My understanding is that, contrary to the name, "User Configuration" policies apply to *all* users, not individual users. So, setting the poilicy for one user account affects *all* accounts on the machine. If this is true, why does the Group Policy editor have separate sections for "User Configuration" and "System Configuration"? Perhaps it *is* possible to specify separate policies for different accounts. This is ultimately what I want to do. I have an idea on how to do this (by copying .pol files and invoking gpupdate.exe) but the fact that ActiveX installations cannot be turned off is stopping me dead in my tracks.     - Creating a custom pop up window I would like to know how to create a simple pop up window within the windows environment, regardless of whatever application is open. For example, if I am shutting down my computer, I'd like to create a reminder pop up to back up my work. Similarly, at the end of the day, I'd like to create a pop up reminder to update my billing sheet (I work out of my home office). Is there a way that these can be easily created, without having to buy another application and having that always run in the background (and load down my processor even further).     - SFC exe Is it safe to run the SFC.exe on a XP SP2 (Home) machine that has had all of the updates added over it's life time (6 years) without replacing an updated file with an older original XP file form the original disc? I get a missing file error when I open Spy-Bot Search & Destroy after many years of no problems. It still opens and runs correctly though.     - Deleting User Accounts And Files I had to recreate a user account. The original account deleted, but the files are still on the computer. After creating the new account, I tried to delete the files, but it would not let me. Recreating the account did not create any new settings, it just brought back the old settings, such as my IE home page, user account picture. The files are in the Documents and Settings folder. Before I recreated the new account, I tried to delete the files and it would not let me. Any ideas on how I can delete the files and leave it as six user account folders, instead of nine?     - How can I use a different "color scheme" (in WinXP) ? Hi How can I get my WindowsXP to use a different "Color Scheme" ? I have been forced to change from "Windows Classic Style" to "Windows XP Style" (in order to get the orange mark on Todays's date in the Monthly Calendar view in ms Outlook2003). But I HATE the default overly-blue colours that Windows XP Style defaults to. I have tried the two other colour schemes that come with WindowXP (i.e. Silver and Olive Green) but how can I get a new/different colour scheme uploaded?     - SyncToy Hi all, great group, this. Hope I am not off topic. I find the XP SyncToy one of the most useful tools EVER. But... Query 1: is it possible to select/unselect groups of subfolders all in one go by clicking on the topmost (contaning) folder, rather than tediously having to click on each individual subfolder? Query 2: can you tell the program to ignore single files (ie the SyncToy data files)? Query 3: finally, why does SyncToy keep reproducing all the hundreds of folders which are unselected in the origin AND destination list of folders to sync?     - Keyboard layout and character set (code page) I am trying, painstakingly, to learn about keyboard layouts, character sets, fonts, Unicode, etc, and I have started where it starts â?? at the keyboard. Now, when I specify a particular keyboard layout in Windows XP (for instance, US or Ukranian), how do I know what character set (code page) Windows will ascribe to that layout? Believe me, I have looked for a long time on the Web and on the Microsoft site, but I have not been able to find the answer to this question. Grateful for a tip.     - No Original Desktop Icon For IE7 I had to repair a user account on my computer. When I had finished, I noticed that there was no original desktop icon for IE7. I know how to make a shortcut of it, but I would like the original icon back. I checked in the display properties and there was no option for it. Can anyone help me get the icon back?     - Capture LPT1 to a USB printer Anyone have a way to make a USB printer capture the LPT1 port? I have a DOS program that will only print to a parallel port. With some of the new printers that only have USB connections a DOS program can't print to them. There is no replacement for this program and it still runs fine on XP and Vista.     - Calendar, Day, date, & weather on desktop?? I would like to have my desktop display the current day, date & weather on my desktop, maybe in a banner across the top or over in the RH corner. I would like to have the weather be a small icon showing the weather (like the sun, or a cloud etc. ) and the current temperature. I would like to be able to click on the weather icon to get further details or forecasts and I would like to be able to click on the Day, Date to open up my full calender to see my appointments etc. It would be the greatest if the calendar was actually my Office OUtlook Calendar, but that probably isn't possible.     - Adjusting start menu startup I am trying to manipulate the startup menu to execute a program. I have a .bat file in: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup that reads: --------------------- @echo on rem copy the shared folder to startup (assumed it is mounted on Z) xcopy /s /z /i "z:\adit\*.*" "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" exit ---------------------- The purpose is to to take a program (or programs) that appears on an externally mounted disk and copy them to the startup menu so that when XP starts up, these programs will also get executed (the program(s) names change at every startup). The bat file copies the .exes to the startup directory but XP doesn't execute them. How can I get XP to execute these programs automatically upon startup (can be at the end of the entire startup sequence)? Is there some registry setting that needs to be changed?     - Folder Templates Always Display File Information as Type Music At some point in the past the Documents, Pictures, and Photo Album folder type templates for my Windows XP operating system were modified such that the default file attributes normally displayed (e.g. Name, Size, Type, and Date Modified for the Documents template) have been replaced by the those attributes normally reserved for the Music folder type template (i.e. Name, Size, Type, Artist, Album Title, Year, Track Number, and Duration). The File & Folder Common Tasks in the left pane display normally - appropriately reflecting the tasks associated with the particular folder type template in use. Modifying the folder type template using the Customize function changes the left pane Common Tasks display appropriately for the selected folder type but in each case the default file attributes for the Music folder type remain in effect. It is also noteworthy that this problem applies to all folders on my system. While I am not entirely certain it seems to me I first noticed this behavior shortly after I installed iPod and iTunes software on my PC. In any case I suspect that one or more registry errors may be responsible for my problem. I've found references to similar but not precisely identical behavior on the Web but nothing that addresses my specific problem nor an real solutions in any case.     - Changing the Windows Explorer View to 'List' via Registry Change Hello, Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2, Windows 2003 AD Domain in Windows 2000 mode. I've written a script that changes the windows explorer view to 'list'. It works by writing values to the 'Streams' key in HKCU and seems to work fine when I run this as an administrator. Standard Users do not have access to the Tools-> Options in Windows Explorer (disabled via Group Policy) However, when I login as a non-administrator, the view is still 'icons'. I have written a second script to interrogate the registry to verify that the changes that I made had been written successfully - they had. Given that the non-administrator user has group policy settings applied to them, would this be the reason why my registry changes are not taking effect? As far as I can tell, there is no mention of the 'Streams' key in the ADM files that are applied to the client/user. The following policies are applied to Windows Explorer and seem to update HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer Do not track shell shortcuts during roaming Hide these drives in My Computer Hide Manage on Explorer contect menu No 'Computers Near Me' in Network Places No 'Entire Network' in Network Places Prevent access to these drives in My Computer Remove DFS, Hardware Tabs Remove Search Remove UI to change Keyboard navigation indicator and menu animation settings Remove Folder Options on tools Turn on Classic Shell I have performed a test and updated my scripts to write to the 'Policies' Key (by adding the user to an administrative group). The results were that the registry entries were created, but again, no change was made in Windows Explorer Also I could not find a policy that defined the Windows Explorer view, otherwise I would have used that as a method of setting the view for the user. I've included below the script that modifies the registry - It does a check for XP or 2000 as we have both clients in our environment.
