I have just reformatted the hard drive and placed windows xp home edition
back on. I am getting no sound from speakers. I went into device manager and
under audio device on high definition audio bus there is a yellow question
mark. I clicked it and it says drivers are not installed. So i pressed
reinstall drivers and it came up with a hardware install wizard asking me to
insert the recovery disc cd. I did this and it says it could not find the
software to load the driver.

Any ideas?

Yes.

You need to figure out what sound card hardware you have, obtain the proper
drivers from the hardware manufacturer and install it. You can do this by
looking at your receipt (maybe), the configuration from the manufacturer
(especially if it is Dell, etc...), opening the computer and looking at the
sound card, etc...

What is the make/model of your computer?

Try Belarc Advisor: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
It does a good job of providing a wealth of information, including the
Sound Card or Chipset your PC is using.

Then go to the sound card/chipset manufacture's web site and download
and install the latest drivers.

Thank you for your help in this problem and also Mr Shenan's help also.
I have downloaded the Belarc Advisor and observed the information. I am a
beginner at troubleshooting and maintenance. What section does sound card or
chipset come under? Do they have another technical term?
My computer is a Mesh Matrix Inspire 05. I am still looking into other
advice from you and Mr Shenan.

Scroll down the Belarc report that is displayed (Belarc uses Internet
Explorer to display it's findings).
About the eight category on the right hand side is "Multimedia".
You should then be able to see what the make of your sound card or chip is.

Do you have a Sound Card or is there a sound chip on the motherboard?
If it's a sound card make certain it's fully inserted and not loose.

Also one of the most common sound chip sets is made by Realtek,
so search the Belarc report for the word 'Realtek', did you find an entry
for Realtek and if so what does it say.

If you find nothing on 'Realtek'
can you tell me the make and model of your PC or motherboard.

My computer is a Mesh Matrix Inspire 05. AMD Athlon T 64 3200+. Under main
circuit board it says :- Board - ASUSTeK Computer INC A8N-VM Rev 1.xx
Bus Clock - 200 Megaherts
BIOS - American Megatrends
Computer is 2 years old. Incidently 'mesh matrix inspire' details are given
on the internet but I dont know the jargon that will help me.

Based on the information you provided I was not able to locate your specific
make and model.
However the motherboard info you provided resulted in the following:

Asus Web Site:

Be certain to pick the proper version of the Windows version listed.
Then download and install the driver.
See below for a way to test your system's audio before you start!

SoundMax audio test and driver download site:

If you look on the right side of this sites web page you will find a section
titled 'Driver Help' and just below that a 'Driver Scan' link which will
test
and I hope verify that you have a SoundMax audio chipset and
verify the driver you need to download which should match what is listed
on the ASUS web site mentioned above.
