    - System Tray Issue When I right click an icon in the system tray, the task bar properties menu comes up along with the shortcut menu for the application icon I clicked. How do I get this to stop???? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tag: right mouse click Tag: 322850

    - Need registry hack help, burner detection and autoplay Discovered that my 3 yr old VAIO will only identify my external burner (ie; 3 yr old USB PlugnPlay firmwareless LG-DVDRAM GSA-5160D SUPER writer) in My Computer window's "name" column as DVD-RAM Drive (H:) only after re-booting while the burner is online and powered up. Some combination(s) of either XPH, the laptop, program preferences, program hogware-ed-ness, or most likely 'simple' registry issues are preventing the burner from being consistently/properly named as mentioned in the My Computer drive name column. As trivial as this next part is (likely a normal thing), but regardless of how the burner is introduced to the laptop, whenever there is no disk in the burner, the drive's properties seem to oddly illustrates the drive disk as totally blue (as if the drive was 100% used), but tossed this in here so's to maybe if that too isn't detecting the drive properly, it might point to base issues with the laptop, XPH or SP2. Note also that if the burner is disconnected (even using "safely remove hardware"), thereafter when the burner's powered off, re-introduced to the laptop, burner then powered back on, the drive name's only then always identified as "CD Drive". And regardless of whichever of the two names that happens to be listed in the "name" column, the "type" column however always lists as "CD Drive". Also for some reason (I'd really like to know why), in the dialog box where the drive should be named (eg; 'DVD-RAM' or 'HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-5160D USB Device'), it's blank and while I can click inside the box and then a 'text focus line' then begins blinking, the box refuses to accept my typing in anything. And thinking that maybe a new burner might require it manually being added to the system when I looked at the media list in computer mgmt > Storage > Media, but not only wasn't the burner listed, but nothing was listed (even when I popped in a DVD and played it). Digging a little deeper, I clicked that utility's disk mgmt, right clicked the burner (CD-ROM 0 DVD(H:)), and noticed that the "Volumes" tab lists the status as "No Media" despite the DVD was playing. Then on a whim, I tick the box for "Enable digital CD Audio for this CD-ROM device", then when I clicked disk management's Computer Management window's file exit, prompted to restart the computer, did so and still the burner remains virtually unchanged as to how its detected, plus it still refuses to autoplay with the preferred handler (WinDVD5). As for WinDVD5 itself, I've ticked its own autoplay tick box, even changing the player source back and forth between "Default" and my burner's drive 'letter', but never will simply popping in a DVD will it autoplay until I open WinDVD5 manually (no doubt registry issue caused). Obviously that's indicating the user needs to manually name the drive, but why isn't the laptop detecting the drive's details that I'm positive it generates? Of lesser annoyance, but still noteworthy, are two programs that fail at detecting my burner(MSWMM and DVD Flick). No doubt as these two progs are likely the least sophisticated/forgiving, if not caused by the bunky registry alone, then maybe there's a chance that hacking those two prog's handlers into the registry's autoplay and/or some other place too would get them squared away. With respect to those two comparatively pale issues, I've tried the usual adjustments and/or fixes recommended by their makers w/o joy, so it's most likely those two programs are simply so buggy and/or inflexible that they simply are incapable of ever working with my burner (which incidentally the burner's newer than either of those progs). And no, never used or installed Nero or RealMedia. Nor do I have any CD Burning software installed (except for XP's explorer default write caching), but I did once have Click to DVD and Dragn Drop installed. So, in that I see no known software conflict/bugs preventing MSWMM & DVDFLick from detecting my burner, ie; none of my other media software has detection issues, ref. no such issues w/the burner's complimentary Interlead "WinDVD5" player, WMP10, WMPC, DVDDecrypter, DVDShrink, ImgBurn or ConvertXtoDVD. As everything seems pointing to registry issues undoubtedly courtesy of hogware, atrocious uninstallers, mostly (I hope) the ripped out (professionally physically uninstalled) laptop burner, then that leaves only the autoplay and new burner's registry entries. As such, it looks like I'm left to hacking the registry. But as the laptop runs XHP/SP2 and I'm barely capable of doing hacking the registry, obviously even though I've/read most everything both available and that I'm capable of understanding/managing, at this point I'm left to asking for something that RegistryBooster (or any software) should be already doing, but doesn't, and that's to try manually straightening out the registry. I've searched the registry, made note of every entry for the burner(s) and anything autoplay related, but I need a little help with some of the value names and hexadecimal numbering before hacking away. There are some 30 or so keys and something like 60 or so value names I need to deal with, but I need a pro to answer things like how to deal with the old burner's entries (if it's there I should be adding the new burner or simply deleting the hexadecimal or even the entire value name), plus what to do about AutoPlay value hexadecimals, plus there's one or two value names I think need removed or their hexa' values changed. But because there are so many keys and values involved just in cleaning out and hacking the registry just for burner recognition and AutoPlay entries, it's highly problematic, not to mention exceedingly labor and time intensive to try to do this via text. So what I'm most in need of, is an experienced registry pro who'll be willing to sit down with me for maybe an hour while going thru the registry. Ideally what is the simplest way to do this is remote desktop viewing, but as risky for both, that leaves Yahoo Messenger webcam or my phoning you. wguru Tag: right mouse click Tag: 322848

    - Reinstallation of xp I was wondering why when I put the Windows XP installation disk into my Compaq Evo N800c I get the message that tells me it can not proceed because Vista is installed on it. In order to install my LEGAL Vista OS, I had to increase RAM from 256MB (which was in the computer when I purchased it) to 1GB. Then I was successful in installing Vista, no problems. But can anyone tell me how to either re-install XP, or make my computer able to run both XP and Vista (Dual Booting, I think it's referred to as).     - Scanner is not listed For several years, I have a Canon scanner and printer installed. Both work fine. However, some of the image editors could not "find" this scanner on my system. In Device Manager, under the Imaging Devices only Logitech Cam is listed. Under ports - Communication port (com1) and ECP Printer Port (LPT1) are listed. There is no question mark or warning anywhere.     - just had new operating system installed hello everyone. i need your help. i just had a new operating system installed...xp pro. my windows now look very ugly. there is a white background on all the windows i open...almost all the writing is in blue...it just looks really ugly and generic. i cant seem to figure out how to adjust the look. all of my websites come up with this look and, it seems that all the verbage seems to drop off in the middle of a sentence. i know the fix is easy but i'm a little frustrated right now to figure it out. please help if you can. -- thanks in advance for helping a newbie!     - Dishwasher Safe Keyboards and Mice Just sharing some info I came across the other day. If you are like me, having a cup of coffee, soft drink or even a glass of wine and a Boscotti there is a good chance some or all will end up on the keyboard.     - MS Windows LiveOne Scanner: Uses Only IE, or others? I have a Dell Dimension 3000 and run XP SP2. I wanted to have a safe browser now that MS is shutting down XP support and got both Opera and Firefox, and I like to use the LiveOne Scanner also. I should say this is the "on-demand-internet scanner", not the whole OneCare Security suite. I find that the scanner does not like Opera and Firefox and states it is not supported by these browsers.     - Problem with .mov clip on dvd disk. Someone gave me a DVD disk with several mov movie clips. Under WXP PRO SP2, when I double click on any of the mov files to play it, I get an error message saying it wants Quicktime, which I do not have, and it bombs. I do have VLC media player v0.8.6, and it will play the clip when I open the clip explicitly via VLC's 'open file'. The same thing happens when I use 'open with' for the clip, and I choose VLC over Quicktime. However, although I tell XP to remember (!) that I want to use VLC for all mov files, when I double click on the mov clip, XP chooses Quicktime again. And it bombs again. In other words, XP doesn't seem to remember that I want it to use VLC for mov files, at least when said mov file is on a disk. Interestingly, when I copy a mov file from the DVD disk to hard disk and double click on the mov file there, VLC is selected by XP to play it, and it plays fine. Under VISTA, none of this happens, VLC is selected to play a mov clip when I double click on a mov file on the DVD disk. Can someone suggest what the problem is here?     - faulty drivers? I built my PC from a kit of parts and installed an OEM copy of XP. At the same time I bought a Wireless Optical Desktop set. I had some early problems getting the PC up and running, but it is now 98% good. The two problems remaining are these. The keyboard/mouse will not install no matter what I try. They work fine on another PC, so are not faulty. The other possibly related problem is with a USB SIM card reader which also will not install.     - Can't disconnect USB disk XP Pro SP2, 512M, Pentium M I have an external hard drive connected through the USB port. When I click on the icon in the taskbar and tell it to disconnect the drive so that I can unplug it I receive a message that the drive is busy, try again later. Waiting until later changes nothing.     - RESTORING WITH RESTORE CD My daughters computer, emachines T2245, is corrupted, I believe. I'm trying to restore the original image with the restore CD but am not getting anywhere. I put in the CD and nothing happens. I open the CD and click on the program icon and Windows says it can't open the file. This is a "old" computer, about 5 years, with SP1.     - How to associate files to the correct application ? In windows XP, I removed a partition from my hard drive and then replaced the files that had been in the partition. All applications run fine, except all file associations to their programs have been lost. For example: clicking jpg files no longer opens my graphics program clicking pdf files no longer opens Acrobat. I have tried in the context menu 'open with' but the dialog will not add the icon of my graphics program and will not open the file in the graphics .exe that I browse to. I have tried Tools> Folder options> File Types but I cannot change the association to the selected file.     - Quick Launch The Help & Support Center advises to add icons to quick launch by draging them from "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer". Unfortunately, I couldn't find the IE "Blue E" or the OE "Envelope" anywhere in those two locations.     - Does Windows XP Home allow me to restore the previous version of an overwritten file? I thought it was possible to go to older versions, but I don't remember how. After a virus infection, I had to reinstall windows. Fortunately my internet explorer's well developed bookmark file was on a second drive.     - Cannot Boot XP Home I found out the hard way that XP home does not allow Dynamic Disks, although it surely let me go ahead and trash my disk.     - DIR/S and an UNC path DIR fails when I try to list the files in \\sillylongname.domain.com\directory\subdirectory on Windows XP Spack2 I can see the files in z:\directory\subdirectory and I can see the files with Windows Explorer with the exact path as specified above. However, mapping will cause me problems in another pat of the batch file I'm fixing, so I'd appreciate assistance from the collected brainitude here on how to get a directory of files, including in subordinate subdirectories, while specifying a UNC path, not a drive letter, in a scriptt running from XP.     - activation in dual boot system I bought a computer (Compaq) with XP preinstalled. Now I installed a second XP (Japanese) making the system dual boot. When I start the second XP, it asks to activate it through either internet or telephone. Because the Ethernet adapter has not been installed in the second OS, I am naturally unable to connect. Telephone option is not available because the number to call will be given through internet. Compaq did not supply CD for OS or motherboard drivers (ethernet, video, audio), so I cannot install drivers for the ethernet before OS starts.(Windows apparently does not seek ethernet until OS is loaded.) Normally as I understand, XP starts without activation and then asks to activate immediately or later. This time for reasons I do not understand the first screen is the so-called activation wizard asking for immediate activation without options. Can anyone tell what is the solution?     - "Wubi-Linux" tutorials please, Linux advice please Hi all; I am part of the MS Windows XP diaspora, i see the end coming and am looking for alternative Operating Systems. At present I run MS Windows XP and sure like it but I am feeling it will not be a secure OS in a few months. I tried to download the Linux "application-OS" named Wubi. FYI, it purports to be the entire Ubuntu OS confiigured as an application and it supports MS Windows XP, purportedly. So why the caveats and purportedlies? When I downloaded Wubi, first it took FOREVER, about nine hours to download, although, thank God, it was not a heavy application and I could use another tab to surf the web at the same time. Second, I never got it to work. When i rebooted, yes, I got the opportunity to go into Ubunbtu, but there was some message (sorry, fool-me, I did NOT jot it down) about RAD drivers being missing. Conclusion: can someone show me a tutorial to get Wubi up and running, so i can see whether Ubuntu is for me. You know, I want to see if it is comfortable for me. ALSO: important: if someone can show me a form of Linux which "feels" like Windows a little, so i am not too stressed to use it, i would like a little advice-education. Do you understand? I'm trying to figure out what version of XP to get to replace the &^%$ Vista that my machine came with.     - Windows XP freezes on startup Hi, I have recently performed a fresh install of Win XP professional. I did everything perfect from scratch i.e. long NTFS format first prior to installing Windows. After this I installed the following applications: Norton 360, Easy CD Media Creator 10, Mozilla Firefox, Limewire. The PC worked okay for a day or so. But today in the morning I tried to boot it and it froze straight after I logged in. I attempted to boot the PC 3 or 4 times after and it was freezing up prior to the login screen. Eventually I logged in and noticed the following error in event viewer: "The SessionLauncher service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the path specified" I clicked on the link for more information and in the file name it referenced "netevent.dll" and under source it referenced "Service Control Manager" I am totally confused as this is a fresh install.     - About the clone thing I saw a thread here asking whether you could clone a system to another drive. From what I could see, there was no discussion of actual cloning. On another OS I used I could do a true clone of the disk at any time onto another disk and boot that disk at will. Is the discussion of other methods based on a fact that there is no such thing as a true clone utility available or does micro$oft put in special killer programs designed to detect cloning and destroy any attempts to move to a bigger drive?     - Standard User Logoff Demand Re-Boot Hi all, I'm seeing a very strange problem that's forcing me to re-boot after a Standard user logs off. Here's the situation: I have an XP Pro, SP2 machine. This is a stand-alone machine (no domain involved). There are two Standard Accounts (S1 and S2) and one Administrative Account (A1). After S1 or S2 logs off, the machine needs to be re-booted before *anyone* else can log on. Every time S1 or S2 logs off, no one else can log on. This weird behavior does not occur after A1 logs off. Now, what do I mean by, "needs to be re-booted"? After XP boots up (or after a user logs off) I see the standard screen that lists all user accounts with separate password fields next to each user name. Well, after S1 or S2 logs off, the cursor cannot be moved to any of these password fields. It is impossible for the next user to enter a password! This is why I have to re-boot.     - How do I get rid of the "Stop running this script?" box My internet provider recently switched me over from USB cable to ethernet cable to connect my computer with my modem. What started happening since then is that every time I go to a new web site, I get a Windows Internet Explorer Box that comes up saying: "Stop running this script? A script on this page is causing Internet Explorer to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive. Yes, No." ...and then I always choose "yes" and then things proceed normally. Question: is there anything I can do to eliminate the continual coming- up of this dialogue box?     - Re-Installation of XP Media Cener 2005 I have an eMachine, purchased from Best Buy 2 years ago. The computer came with XP Media Center 2005 pre-installed. I got a certificate but no XP disk, instead they provided a disk labeled "eMachine Microsoft Windows XP Media Center 2005 System Recovery CD/DVD" "Use this disk to re-install your operating system" and WARNING: The recovery process erases all data files from the hard drive" My eMachine has crashed. The Geek Squad guys diagnosed a dead hard drive. They're removed the hard drive and shipped it to Geek Squad Central in hopes of them being able to recover all my data from the drive. I've purchased a new hard drive to replace the dead one since the diagnosis found no other problems. My question is this - is the Windows XP System Recovery DC/DVD what I need to install XP on my system, (old computer - new HD)? A friend of mine had a similar problem and it turned out to be caused
by some lint in the mouse button/contacts area. Try blowing through
the cracks around the right button and see if any lint comes out.
