Upgrading to SP3
I'm going to bite the bullet today and load SP3.
Here's my understand (er... wish)
Since my SP2 system up to date with all updates. The SP3
installation will go more quickly? because SP3 is an
agglomeration of all previous updates (with perhaps a few
new ones). Is that correct?

Windows XP Support Extended until 2014
Microsoft has finally given in to public demand. The company has decided
to offer technical support for Windows XP with updates and security
patches for an extended period until April 2014. However, it will not go
back on its decision to discontinue Windows XP sales after June 30.

XP. My 5 year old HP motherboard is going. I am afraid of getting a new one
with Vista. This is for my home so I dont want to lease it. I want to go
somewhere reliable and not have to spend alot of money. I was thinking
between $250-$400.00. I think I just need a tower I have a monitor and
printer which are about 5 years old also, but they work okay. Thank you.

Offline File Folder/Subfolder Structure
I recently bought a laptop to use at work, Win XP Pro on board.
I read through how to set up the "offline files" so I could work on my
networked files at home and then sync up again when connected back up at work.
(I had been doing this previously with a flash drive and Briefcase.)
Well, the initial sync worked, set up all the files in an offline file
folder on the desktop, but when I looked at the files, they are in one big
list, no subfolder structure shows...the listing shows that their original
location still is in a subfolder, but it didn't copy the subfolder structure
over (and I DID click the little box that asked if I wanted the subfolders
synced.)
I am a little new to messing around with networked files, and I don't want
to do something that will go back and screw up the files on the network when
I sync up next, so I didn't want to just "try" stuff...
Anyone know how to get the new offline files to mimic the network subfolder
structures? I have a dozen folders and hundreds of subfolders...not like I
can just "rebuild" this myself and put the files in it...

installing to c:/
Previously I have installed Windows XP Pro many times as a clean (HDD
formatted) install and every time it installs to drive c:/
I now want to try to do a multi -boot, so I started with a partitioned disk
with the first primary partiton as ntfs. Nothing else installed.
However in this case windows installs XP as drive G:/ (after my other HDD,
DVD drives and assorted USB/SD card readers.)
I want a clean install with Windows XP on c:/

Formatting a bootable Hard Disk
Hello! Friends:
My OS is WinXP-Pro. I wish to create an identical disk (a new hard disk) to
my C drive (bootable) so that when drive C crashes, I would have a back up to
it.
The drive letter to the new hard disk is D. I can format it with Disk
Management, but was unable to make it a bootbale drive. Had tried in DOS with
the command: FORMAT D: /s, but failed. Any helps?
If it is impossible to do it this way as Windows prohibits to format D as a
system drive, then what other ways to achieve this? Thanks.

Access an XP data drive (no OS installed) using Vista Ultimate
I have already taken ownership over what I was able to via the "Security" tab
and it does show that I am the current owner re the admin portion of the
drive, HOWEVER, physically...I am unable to view ANY directory or folders on
this drive. Vista only shows a drive letter and when I click on drive...says
"no access".
Windows Vista recognizes only that it is a drive...but will not allow me
physical access to it. This was only a slave (data drive) only. And some
folders did have password protection, however, like I said...I have already
changed ownership rights to the drive. I was the administrator of this
"data" drive in my previous system and have all passwords, etc...it is just
not allowing me to physically get into the drive to navigate around.
So, what I need is clarification that there IS a way to physically access my
SATA drive in my Vista system and if there are software settings I need to
change in the security tabs first what are they?
Will I need to put this drive back into a XP system? I would have to build
or buy one...as all of my systems are currently Vista systems. then what is
the best, most efficient way to get 200gb of data to my Vista system?

XP Pro SP3 Will Not Automatically Install Updates
I have a client with a strange problem. XP will download the updates,
but cannot install them. They always fail. If I do them manually, they
will install fine.
This machine was recently restarted from the ground up. I installed XP
Pro SP2, then updated to SP3 using a CD created with the ISO from
Microsoft.
As far as I can tell, this machine has never installed an update on it's
own. When I did the initial call, every update that was released from
the end of May had failed. The system is set to update automatically.
I got a call this morning from her stating that another update
(KB951376) had failed to install.
Any ideas out there?

MMC??
After booting to my Slave Hard Drive (a clone of the Master),

Offline files - Working offline, what is going on?

It has to do with turning off all digital signing on your 2k domain

At one point I thought it was because they had their wireless NIC on at the

Unable to write to my NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A
I can read a previously written cd or dvd but cannot write to a blank
disk (cd/dvd)in the D drive. When attempting to write to the drive
containing a blank CD I get an error message that there isn't a disc in
the drive. Properties says that the free space and used space on the cd
in the drive are zero.
I can read the drive using Image Burn and it gives the correct amount of
space used/available. I can also burn to the drive using Image Burn.
This would preclude a defective drive.
Am not sure when the problem occurred. By that I mean that I have not
used the drive for a month or so and during that period something such
as an new program could have changed the registry in such a manner as to
prevent writing/recognizing a blank cd in the drive.
Trouble shooting thus far: Based upon an MVP suggestion I changed the
upper and lower filters in the registry to upperfiltersold and
lowerfiltersold.
Following this change I was able to read a CD, however I still cannot
burn a CD. Prior to the change I
could not read a previously recorded CD. The mvp suggestion was directed
to another writer/poster and I had
no direct communication with the mvp. The forum I was monitoring is:
forums.microsoft.com/msdn. You might ask, why didn't I chat with the
MVP... good question.. the answer is that I did not have my newsreader
active until today, hence could not post.
Also tried a system restore... but for some reason or another the OS
will not restore..(restore is enabled) which makes me think that my
problems are not just related to the driver/drive issue...
The usual suspects for messing up the registry are Canon, Kodak, Itunes,
Quicktime, Adobe photoshop and PhotoStudio. My problem is that I don't
know how to go about isolating the above suspects as being the culprit
of if indeed they might
Note. Read in the one the Microsoft newsgroups.. don't ask which one..
the Kodak easyshare is notorious for messing up the registry..
Anyway I certainly will appreciate any information/solution that might
be offered.

A very large number of .tmp files
I literally have over 5000 temp files in the local settings for both users on
this pc. The all start with the letters "DIO" and are all 47KB in size.
What do you think, safe to delete these? If not, what program is creating
them (most likely candidates I understand)
Thanks in advance Tag: CD ROM issue Tag: 324304
I need to password protect my pc at startup
I have XP Home on my PC at work. I need to protect my computer so NO ONE
else can get on to it. I know someone has been coming into the office after
hours and on weekends and reading my emails and looking at files. Personal
emails have been read and then marked unread but when I click them typically
the person sending has "send a receipt" when opening emails and on Mondays
I'm not getting that message if I reply to an email and the sender again
replies then I do get that. Also when looking at properties on files it
will say when it was last accessed and it will be a time I was not at work.
So...
How do I make my computer secure?
Is using windows logon with a password secure enough so no one else can get
on my pc?
Is there a better way to protect my machine?
Thanks in Advance!

Shortcuts
I have recently installed Office 2007 on XP sp2. For some reason I cannot
right click for getting shortcuts on the desktop after going to all programs
- nothing happens. I can't drag a shortcut from the programs in the list
after clicking start. Is there something I have to reset? I have tried to
reinstall but no good. Tag: CD ROM issue Tag: 324291
Windows can not find file (path and name). SP3???
Just started having a problem of Windows stating it can not find a file that
is there.
I go to my web site directory (htdocs) and then a specific directory and
double click on a file. Normally this file then come engages my web browser
and all is well. However, lately I get an error message from windows that
the specified file does not exist and I should check spelling. The file is
there and I do not know why this is happening EXCEPT is upgraded to SP3.
Yes, I am not so smart. My mistake!!!
Can I get rid of SP3 or is it a total reload?

backup utility
In an effort to try to negate the influence of my download of sp3 and its
negative effect on performance, I am getting ready to make some changes,
therefore, I want to do a backup first.
The utility that Windows supplies does does not allow me to backup if the
file size is the backup copy of the file size is larger than 4GB. It goes
back with a box thats says that is the max. size for fat32 file allocation.
How do we backup an entire drive to a USB harddrive (150GB). ??
Is there an easy way to back up and keep the file format of the exisiting
files, not security copy to a single file ?? Tag: CD ROM issue Tag: 324286
Event Log
Hello,
How do I find out who has logged on to a Windows XP pc and for how long?
I think this must be done through event log but not sure how.

My cd rom player will no longer read original cd's. It will play my back-up
cd's but not the original applications.
