He had already "named" the computer, and had not created a "user account". When I got the computer and fired it up, if I recall corectly, I simply typed in my name when prompted.     - Email Prolem I have a friend who has a new computer. When she sends out an email the whole message comes on the left hand side of the page. Sometimes there is just one word per line, other times 2 or 3 but I must scroll down constantly to read the whole thing. Also when there is a new paragraph there is a long space in between. Here is the odd thing (to me anyhow) her old computer had started doing the same thing. And, it is just not me that gets messages like this but other folks also. What could be the problem? She had someone over to her house yesterday to look at her computer and work on it and she thought he had fixed it but the email I got from her last night was still the same. She is 75 years old and just lost her son and this is very frustrating to her. Any suggestions...in just plain english please....as I am no more knowledgable than she when it comes to computers.     - editor/WP XP Pro SP2. Originally on my machine I had two text "handlers." NotePad, a bare minimum text editor and another one more powerful (but not really a word processor) that dealt with .doc files (at least to some extent), but I can't remember the name of it. I think both of these came with XP. After temporarily installing Open Office 2.1 I found the second one had been deleted. The Open Office uninstall did not reset what had been there. I can't find anything like it in Windows Components or Add Software or in my archive of stuff I installed myself. Anybody have a clue what I'm talking about and how to get it back?     - Keyboard Mouse movement Am I dreaming? Isn't there a way to use keyboard arrow keys, etc to simulate mouse movement and buttons? I had a friend mistakenly disable the touch pad on a laptop.     - My icons are displayed incorrectly in my DVD/CD drive Hi, I have noticed recently that my files and folders are displayed incorrectly in my optical DVD/CD drive. My files and folders are now displayed as web icons or internet explorer icons eventhough I have no web pages on this storage device. This is very annoying. I have tried viewing the files under various formats and thumbnails is the closest it gets to displaying the icons properly. When I remove the CD/DVD disc and view the contents of the disc on another computer, the files are displayed correctly. Please note my icons are displayed correctly on all other drives on my windows xp computer except for my CD/DVD D: optical drive. This is so bizarre. Should I look for the IconCache.db file and delete it? But then again, my icons are displayed correctly in all other drives of my computer. I have even checked the properties of DVD-RW optical drive and on the recording tab "the enable cd recording checkbox is ticked along with "the automatically check the CD box". Is there anything else I need to adjust here in the properties? I would welcome any suggestions on why my files and folders are being displayed as web icons in DVD-RW optical D: drive.     - Can't find a simple setting I'm sorry to bother this group with a Win2000 question but I can't find an alternative. My printer prints in a font that is way too large for a "screen page" (email, web page, office document) to fit on an 8.5 x 11 paper and I just can't find the setting to reduce its size when printing. I have gone thru the Control Panel settings and played with every setting I thought could apply, with no luck. I have checked the printer documentation but found nothing there either.     - Transient problem after installing SP3 Just a note in case anyone runs into a similar problem. I installed SP3 from the 324MB download file on an XP Pro SP2 system with two users defined (one normal and one admin). After going through the recommended restart I tried to logon as the normal user. The system presented a popup stating that the user's profile could not be found. Sure enough, none of the user's customization (desktop, start up, etc) were there. As part of the online chat with MS support (using the admin account), I pressed ctl-alt-del twice and only the admin user appeared. However, when I switched to the normal user, all was back to normal. Going back to the admin account, ctl-alt-del twice showed both users. I rebooted again just to make sure everything was really OK.     - Brand new laptops/pc with xp pro -64 bit HELP! I recently pruchased 2 new laptops and 1 pc from Dell. For some reason when they arrived they have the Windows XP Professional -64 bit operating system. This operating system is not conducive to our network operation using various HP printers and our virus protection. Our computer tech has suggested reinstalling the 32 bit operating system to rectify the problem so that I can have use of the software, printers, etc. Dell has accommodated my situation by sending me the 32-bit o/s software to install. THIS IS MY QUESTION: When the software arrives (hopefully the US Mail will be kind and deliver tomorrow), how do I install the new o/s? I am pretty savvy when it comes to working on the computer (Externally not internally!); But I am not sure what to do when the software does arrive. I maybe jumping the gun before the software gets here and I read the instructions, but I would like to get some feedback before tomorrow so that I know what to expect. [I currently DO NOT have any programs that run off of a -64 bit o/s, this is why I want to revert back to the -32 bit o/s.] Once I install the -32 bit o/s, I WILL log back on and tell of my experience!     - Un-installed Program Remembers Previous Obsolete Installation Path ? Hello, I am having great difficulty re-installing Net Fusion Objects (NOF). Upon re-installation under an administration account it operates correctly. However in a Power User account it gives the known "Incorrect version of FSI.dll detected, please re-install" error and halts, and it recreates the first installation path and sets up a user profile there. The Power User account has full control permissions for the NOF folder. Re-installing does not work, and I have tried regsvr32 for the fsi.dll and related DLLs which returns error messages, installed SP3 in case any DLL updates were required, run sfc.exe ("scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions"), deleted remaining register entries for *netobj* (but not *msnetobj*), and deleted any documents and settings files/ folders related to *netobj*. How does NOF remember its first installation path and does anyone have ideas other than those mentioned on how to solve the fsi.dll problem ?     - How to Copy-paste from Internet Explorer to Word I used to be able to select a section from a website and paste it into Word. Today my computer started acting as though is was pasting but after an hour the computer was still locked up and had to be canceled.     - Monitor screen shaking I have WinXP SP3 on one machine and a 13" Proview monitor. When I boot it up in the morning and the manufacturer's logo appears, the monitor screen (the image) starts shaking, expanding and contracting. It lasts for a few seconds before the image stabilizes and everything becomes normal. If I reboot, no shaking at all. My guess is that in a morning cold monitor there is something that causes this sort of distortions, while in the warm monitor everything is OK. May someone please tell me what's going on?     - Cloning Western Digital Hard Drive Hi: I have a Sony desktop VGC-RA716G running Windows MCE (2005) with a 250 GB Western Digital hard drive model WDC WD2500BB. I am cloning this hard drive with an exact duplicate hard drive using Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools software version 11.2 Windows. I have cloned the master HD C;\ to the secondary slave HD F:\ twice and each time I get a notice that 3-4 insignificant files were not copied. One was a log file etc.and none appear applicable the problem I have with MS Word 2002 after each clone. Everything is fine with the exception of MS Word 2002 each time is corrupted when I try and open a .doc file. I uninstall Word 2002 and reinstall it and the cloned HD is fine. I wonder if there is something proprietary with Word 2002 that causes this each time? Just strange that the only problem that I have is Word 2002.     - SVCHOST.EXE When my system is restarted, I find that "svchost.exe" is keeping it busy for minutes after everything else is loaded and quieted down. Hi group,
Lately I've been having problems keeping my internet DSL connected, tech
support suggested updating drivers in device manager, havent been in there
in quite a while, when I opened DM it continously refreshes after 2-3
seconds. Don't know how long its been doing this. I went into safe mode and
it does the same thing in there.
Running windowsXP SP2
Any suggestions.
