Running windows xp home with sp2. When I boot the machine it comes to the
desktop but no icons are present. The same thing happens if I boot to safe
mode. I can do ctrl-alt-del and get the task manager. from there I can
pretty much run anything I want. When I look under the processes tab
explorer.exe is not present. If I enter the command to run it, I can see the
desktop bottom tollbar flash for a secone and then go away. It is as thought
explorer.exe turns off as soon as it turns on. Will re-install windows if
need be, but really don't want to go through the process if not necessary.
Are there any other solutions out there? Thanks!

Boot from the XP CD and opt to do a repair install.

Did that .. but the result was the same. I have though since removed a
number of trojan viruses so perhaps I should do the repair install again.

Hi,
It's likely that there's still malware (trojan, virus, spyware) installed.
No program removes all malware.

See these sites for help, including the posting of a HijackThis log to one
