I've been trying to copy files to a western digital 1 terabyte
external hard drive.

When I try to copy a file larger then 63kb I get the following
message:

"The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

The drive works fine on another computer.
I can create directories and delete files.
I can copy files to it as long as they are smaller then 64kb.

Possibly a problem with the machine's USB port

I've also tried a varity of ports (usb & firewire) and a varity of
cables.

It works on one computer, but not on the one I actually want it to
work on, which indictes to me some sort of setting on the computer...

Since I could not fix my problem in any other way, I made the decision
to upgrade from xp-pro to vista.

However, I only had 10 gigabytes free space on my =93C=94 drive, and the
vista box said I needed at least 15 free gigs.

So I bought a new, cloning the old =93C=94 drive onto the new one.

After I had the new larger drive installed, just for kicks (before
installing vista) I double-checked to see if the I/O problem with the
1 terabyte my book still existed.

For some totally odd reason, the problem was solved.

Why swapping out the boot drive fixed the problem I don=92t know, but it
worked for me. I hope this helps others.
