    - Hardware Monitor found an error Hi..this morning after waking up, I found my computer frozen, and was forced to at first restart which let me to a screen that told me Hardware Monitor found an error and to click F! to continue.. I was not able to get F1 to respond, and after trying a couple of times to turn off my computer manually, I was finally able to get to a screen where Chkdsk was checking for errors.. it seemed to fix them, finding several minor errors and even an error in a gif file. Can someone tell me if there is something I can do to fix the problem or if chkdsk corrected the errors, and is everything ok now??? :) sure hope so! Appreciate any response, thanks Rainy..     - Windows won't recognize "System and Applications Recovery " cd Boy. am I ticked. It recognizes everything else, but not this one. The media must be broken or whatever. I was going to try to reinstall WinXP, but that's the only disk I have. I can't think of anything else to do. Can anyone suggest any options? What problems ( or whatever they're called) do you know of that I should consider re: upgrading to the Vista OS? I'm running Office & Windows XP, Outlook Express is my newsreader.     - Missing dll files in Temp folder Windows XP SP2 - 1 user account and 1 admin account The user account was infected on 2 April, probably with virtumonde. Between Norton and SpyBot it seems to have been fixed. In the course of working the problem, I manually deleted numerous files from various temporary folders, especially exe and dll files modified at the time of infection. Now when I log on to that account, I get three small pop-up windows alerting me that files C:\Docume~1\Barry\LOCALS~1\Temp\hgGyWOFu.dll C:\Docume~1\Barry\LOCALS~1\Temp\Yjgldenv.dll C:\Docume~1\Barry\LOCALS~1\Temp\awtutUNh.dll could not be found. I assume no real system file is ever stored in a user's temporary folder. Everything seems to work after acknowledging the alerts so I'm hoping these files were part of the virus.     - XP Installation problems- please help! I have a laptop which was runnning Windows 2000 and I'm trying to install Windows XP on it. I did manage to get it on but I must have made some mistake somewhere as on startup it was giving me the option to boot into either XP or Windows 2000. Before explaining the current status I should just explain exactly what I'd like to acheive ideally. One hard drive (C) with the full amount of storage space (10GB) running Windows XP. That's it! Nothing more, nothing less. So I have tried to do a few things- deleting partition, re-installing XP and now I'm really confused! When I startup now, I get 3 choices from the boot screen: Windows XP Home Edition Windows 2000 Professional Windows XP Setup If I select Windows XP Home Edition it says: Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. COuld not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the Windows documemntation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information. If I select Windows 2000 Professional it gets me into Windows 2000. If I go to Computer Management>Disk Management there it reads: C: 5GB FAT32 - Primary Partition Unallocated 4.36GB Right-clicking on either of these doesn't give me an option to either delete or format. If I try Windows XP Home Edition Setup it says: Welcome to Setup To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER Insert the CD labeled Windows XP Home Edition CD ROM I then put in the disk and press enter. I then get the following screen: The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer 9586MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MPR] C: Partition1 (VAIONOTE) [FAT32] 5122MB 979MB free Unpartioned space 4463MB If I press 'D' on C, it says: Setup is unable to perform the requested operation on the slected partition. This partition contains temporary Setup files that are required to complete the installation. 'D' doesn't work on the unpartitioned space. If try to set up on C, it says: The partition you have chosen is too full to contain Windows XP which requires a drive with at least 1033MB of free disk space. I also have the following options: To repair a Windows XP intallation using Recovery Console, press R To quite Setup without installing Windows XP press F3 So, what do I do????!!!     - Internet time Hi, My Dell XP (0.5 year old) has a problem in its clock. It always gives me wrong time. It happens even after I manually change the time. Eventually I have to download a utility that is scheduled to automatically adjust time several times a day. But still the computer still switches time to a wrong one sometimes. I try to check and uncheck different options (e.g. "automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes", "automatically adjust clock via internet") in XP's "date and time properties" dialog.     - Problem opening a picture in an email I have two computers, each using Outlook Express 6 and WindowsXP Home. On each I tried opening a picture embedded in an email by right clicking the picture and selecting Save As. On computer 1, the file opens "Save Picture" and allows a normal save as JPEG. On computer 2, I get an error message. "Can't find the file specified". The help button identifies the missing file as c:\windows\sysyem32\mshtml.hlp I checked both computers' folders and find that each contains two files: mshtml.dll and mshtml.tlb.     - White screen freeze Hi my lap top has devleoped some problem on boot up. It just freezes onto a white screen on boot up before I see any graphics. It looks as though it can access the DVD/CD drive but any attempt to boot up with a recovery disc fails in the same white screen and it freezes. I have tried the manufacturers advice as powering up with the F12 key pressed and another suggestion on the CD to hold the C key down whislt turning on the power brings the same result. Nothing bu the white screen. I have treid F8 to see if I can get into safe mode but it won't move on past the initial clunking of the drives and then silence. I can't think of any way to get this to allow me to move on. I am sure you can though? I would be happy to format and reload but if I can't access the drive then how can I do that?     - Resizing pics to e-mail When right clicking on a .jpg image and selecting "send to e-mail recipient", I used to get a pop-up "Send Pictures Via E-Mail - Windows can resize the pictures you send so they transfer faster, etc. etc." It no longer appears, so I have to edit each image and change the attributes manually after Outlook Express opens with the image attached.     - Properties menus I have 2 computers a Dell desktop and a Gateway laptop. When I right click My Computer to get system information on the Dell I get a box with 7 tabs: General, Computer name, Hardware, system restore Automatic update, remote and advanced. I then went online and bought Norton 360, but it could not finish downloading because my computer told me I needed to download Windows XP Service Pack 2.     - Read Only Permission on Removable Storage Been using a USB 125mb stick for sometime. Out of the blue it responded that the Media was write protected when i tried to save something to it. Only about 20mb used, and all folders and files are reading ok, and I can copy them. When I open properties on the stick, I do not see a Security tab, so I can't change permissions.     - EVERYTHING is Gibberish - Can't restore, HELP! I just ran Autopatcher for the first time - it ran for a good 20 minutes installing Windows updates. When my computer restarted all the text was gibberish - any text associated with an icon is nonsense - it's not like it's a different language - it's all strange shapes and symbols. I tried to restore Windows to an earlier time but was told it couldn't be done. I tried 3 different times to restore from different times over the last couple of days - got the same message each time that the restore had failed (no other explanation was given). I then tried to reinstall XP using the CD but got a message that what was on the machine is a later version and that I couldn't use the CD. I've started in Safe Mode and get the same gibberish.     - Win XP CD won't boot This is a strange one. I'm trying to change my Lenovo desktop machine from (preloaded) Vista back to XP. I have a legit XP CD, all the XP drivers for that machine from the Lenovo website and am familiar with installing XP. I've changed the boot sequence to CD, but the machine simply won't boot from the XP CD. The drive starts and continues to run, but there is no boot activity. Just for fun I tried booting from an old Win 98 CD and it will boot, but when I replace the 98 with the XP the machine just quits responding. Any ideas? And another question - If I can boot with the 98 CD, would I accomplish anything by formatting the hard drive at that point, then attempting to install XP? Or would I totally screw up the system? It's almost as if Vista refuses to acknowledge that XP exists. Lenovo has been no help - they just keep telling me to do what I've already done. Any help greatly appreciated.     - Two partition drive I've got a Sony Vaio PCG-FXA36; one drive, two partitions; C part has a 7.8GB capacity with 19% free space at this point in time; D part has a 10.82GB capacity with 92% free space at this point. C part is FAT32; D part is NTFS. The problem: Eventually, I will get down to 15% free space on C part and will not be able to defrag; I continually try to transfer as many files as I can to the D part, but there are some things that I just can't transfer, like O.S. files, etc. If I had known more about computers when I had bought this one, I would have asked more questions and probably would have avoided buying a computer that is configured in this manner. However, that being said: Question: Can I reconfigure the drive into one partition, lose the "D", and do it under the NTFS file system? If so, how do I do it? Thank you. XP is fully up to date with SP2 and all subsequent updates. First, this is what *does* work. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On the XP PC (192.168.x.x): ---------------------------------------- 1. I installed sdilpd.exe (<http://www.bmtmicro.com/BMTCatalog/win/sdilpd.html> and set up the printer queue. 2. "netstat -a" confirmed that lpd was listening on port 515. 3. "telnet 192.168.x.x 515" confirmed that I could connect locally to the server. On the Linux PC: ----------------------- 1. "telnet 192.168.x.x 515" confirmed that I could connect remotely to the server. 2. I set up a printer, and printed successfully to the XP printer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Although everything worked exactly as I wanted, the snag is that sdildp is on a 30-day trial. Looking for an alternative approach, I discovered belatedly that XP appears to have built-in lpd support, so I uninstalled sdilpd and then did the following: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On the XP PC: -------------------- 1. I set up the lpd server (Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services). 2. "netstat -a" confirmed that lpd was listening on port 515. 3. "telnet 192.168.x.x 515" confirmed that I could connect locally to the server. 4. I attempted to configure a printer, setting up an LPR port on 192.168.x.x. This failed, with the long error message stating that it could go no further. On the Linux PC: ----------------------- 1. "telnet 192.168.x.x 515" did not connect remotely to the server, and timed out. 2. Wireshark on the XP machine confirmed that the telnet connect request from the Linux machine did reach the XP machine, but the server did not respond in any way. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BOTTOM LINE: I am mystified as to why I cannot configure the printer on the XP machine, and why local telnet requests to the server work on the XP, but do not work across the LAN, even though I have already proved there is nothing wrong with the LAN connectivity.     - Running two OS Home/PRO Recently I went and purchased Microsoft Xp Professional for my computer. I now have Pro and Home Installed on my computer on two seperate partitions. ( i had a friend do the partition with partition magic 8.0) I read that for the other partition to work as a dual boot system I should have installed Boot magic so the computer would prompt me at the beginning to select the OS i want to choose. (He uninstalled anything Partion Magic related after partion was completed.) but i dont have boot magic installed. His words were oops.... lol So now i have another OS taking up half my drive. Are there other programs that i can put on this computer to that would do the same thing as Boot Magic? Or should i purchase the bundle with Partition Magic/DataKeeper/Boot magic ?     - Screen capture and data plotting Several days ago, I asked some advice on how to do screen capture under XP and was referred to Screen Hunter and to Quick Screen Capture. I've tried both, and they work but not in my application. I'm running XP/SP2Also and I have an old DOS program which plots data and makes graphs. I run it from Windows Explorer, finding its .EXE program in its folder and executing it from there. The graph appears full screen, but I have tried what I think are all settings and combinations in Configuring Quick Screen Capture and also in Screen Hunter. They both work but I can't seem to grab the plot, which I believe may be a "Full Screen" plot. I never seem to capture it to that I can then copy it to a file, or Paste it into IrfanView.. Some more advice specific to those capture programs would be welcome, and also some other programs to try..... Also, if anybody knows of a good program for making graphs, plots of a simple table of X-Y data, without all the advanced frills of curve fitting and regression and other advanced capabilities, please refer me to them.     - Reinstalled windows xp and have some problems I recently restore my windows xp operating system because I had viruses on my computer. I have a Dell xps 410 and im using windows xp media center. After i reinstalled my operating system i cant install some software that use to work fine before i reinstalled my windows i have downloaded all the windows updates. When i try to install some software i get a access violation error. when im logged in in safe mode as the administrator and i try to open a file i put in the shared folder with my user account i get access denied error. Why do i get access denied when im logged in as administrator? I don't understand that at all. Before i reinstalled windows everything worked fine but now i cant install some software and im getting access denied errors. i got Kaspersky and it say i don't have any viruses and iv ran reg mechanic and regcure both of which found errors and fixed them but the problems still remain. can anyone please help me with this?     - Reinstalled windows xp and have some problems I recently restore my windows xp operating system because I had viruses on my computer. I have a Dell xps 410 and im using windows xp media center. After i reinstalled my operating system i cant install some software that use to work fine before i reinstalled my windows i have downloaded all the windows updates. When i try to install some software i get a access violation error. when im logged in in safe mode as the administrator and i try to open a file i put in the shared folder with my user account i get access denied error.     - The Hard Disk is Not Formatted Recently I had a problem with my home built PC. My hard disk (C) (Samsung 250GB PATA) would not load into Windows XP. I have now swapped my secondary disk (Maxtor 80GB) so that windows can now boot up into XP. However, when I check in "My Computer" the second disk is present, but when I double click the drive it states "The disk in drive E is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" Uninstall Zone Alarm, uninstall & reinstall Limewire & then try it.
Then reinstall ZA & see if it still works.

Maybe you must be logged on as an administrator privileged account, not as a
limited user. Have you updated your Java RE?
