Normally, you need to connect to a telephone line; you normally need dial
tone.
My FAX setup is a 56K modem connected to a Commshare switch and then to a
phone line. I'm also connected via DSL to the phone line.
The Commshare switch makes the phone line dual purpose, FAX and voice
capability.
I was dissatisfied with the Windows built-in fax software, so I chose RKS
fax software; it's very good and modestly priced.
