    - 3 GB files for Symantec??? Computer Club member's computer. 20GB hard drive, 26% free space after a few hours of moving folders to an external USB drive. Can't defragment a bunch of Symantec files: C:\Program files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs Dozens of folders with 50 to 60 MB each with names such as: 20050912.024 20061511.017 20080215.021 20080621.003 Each appears to be the date created.     - no internet after drive reformat I reloaded Win XP on a new hard drive after my old one died. I have two problems now. 1. I am unable to get an internet connection either by wire or WIFI. This is in a house with both wire and WIFI in which other computers work fine. When I check the drivers I find that there is a yellow question mark on all my "other " hardware including VGA driver, ethernet, PCI sound and multimedia. I am unable to find drivers on the installation WinXP ser2 disc. 2. My video resolution was incredibly low and when I go to display settings I am unable to move the slider bar to a higher setting.     - Offline files - Working offline, what is going on? I have a couple laptops that are giving me fits. Windows XP Pro SP3 and up to day. This was happening long before I installed SP3 File server is 2003 Server. They keep going "Off line". There's a little pop-up balloon that pops up and says: "Offline files - Working offline You are no longer connected to 'MyServerName'. You can continue working normally. Click this icon to view status." I've made this setting change: Windows Explorer\Tools\Folder Options, Offline Files tab, Advanced button. Set to "Never allow my computer to go offline. I found this information is NewGroup past, but don't know if it's relevent: This is 100% the SMB signing bug inhtroduced with XP SP1. The workaround was contained in KB article #331519, but Microsoft just recently yanked the article with no word, and has provided no substitute fix. Call MS, quote the article, and get it fixed. It has to do with turning off all digital signing on your 2k domain controller. At one point I thought it was because they had their wireless NIC on at the same time their LAN NIC was on, but that doesn't seem to be it. I also thought it might be Symantech's antivirus, but we tried disabling that and the laptop still goes in to offline mode. Anyone have an idea what I should be looking for to resolve this???     - Lsass.exe - System Error When starting an HP computer the subject dialog box opens with a big red X. The text states: "an invalid parameter was passed to a service or function." with a button to check OK. If one clicks on the OK, the computer restarts.     - Blue screen winsrv not found Hi. i use a dell pc with win xp home edition sp1, i started to download the sp3 and appears a blue screen when reeboot the machine. 1st start the win boot screen, then reeboot again and again, i lefted for 2 hours to see if the problem correct automaticly and nothing happend. 2nd time i turned off the machine, when i turned on after the boot screen appears the blue screen with: stop:c0000135 {unable to locate components} this application has failed to start because winsrv was not found, re-installing the application may fix this problem. the problem is that i cant start windows, every time that i turned on this blue screen appears at the beggining, PLEASE ANY SUGGESTIONS.     - Unable to write to my NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A I can read a previously written cd or dvd but cannot write to a blank disk (cd/dvd)in the D drive. When attempting to write to the drive containing a blank CD I get an error message that there isn't a disc in the drive. Properties says that the free space and used space on the cd in the drive are zero. I can read the drive using Image Burn and it gives the correct amount of space used/available. I can also burn to the drive using Image Burn. This would preclude a defective drive. Am not sure when the problem occurred. By that I mean that I have not used the drive for a month or so and during that period something such as an new program could have changed the registry in such a manner as to prevent writing/recognizing a blank cd in the drive. Trouble shooting thus far: Based upon an MVP suggestion I changed the upper and lower filters in the registry to upperfiltersold and lowerfiltersold. Following this change I was able to read a CD, however I still cannot burn a CD. Prior to the change I could not read a previously recorded CD. The mvp suggestion was directed to another writer/poster and I had no direct communication with the mvp. The forum I was monitoring is: forums.microsoft.com/msdn. You might ask, why didn't I chat with the MVP... good question.. the answer is that I did not have my newsreader active until today, hence could not post. Also tried a system restore... but for some reason or another the OS will not restore..(restore is enabled) which makes me think that my problems are not just related to the driver/drive issue... The usual suspects for messing up the registry are Canon, Kodak, Itunes, Quicktime, Adobe photoshop and PhotoStudio. My problem is that I don't know how to go about isolating the above suspects as being the culprit of if indeed they might Note. Read in the one the Microsoft newsgroups.. don't ask which one.. the Kodak easyshare is notorious for messing up the registry.. Anyway I certainly will appreciate any information/solution that might be offered.     - A very large number of .tmp files I literally have over 5000 temp files in the local settings for both users on this pc. The all start with the letters "DIO" and are all 47KB in size.     - I need to password protect my pc at startup I have XP Home on my PC at work. I need to protect my computer so NO ONE else can get on to it. I know someone has been coming into the office after hours and on weekends and reading my emails and looking at files. Personal emails have been read and then marked unread but when I click them typically the person sending has "send a receipt" when opening emails and on Mondays I'm not getting that message if I reply to an email and the sender again replies then I do get that. Also when looking at properties on files it will say when it was last accessed and it will be a time I was not at work. So... How do I make my computer secure?     - Windows can not find file (path and name). SP3??? Just started having a problem of Windows stating it can not find a file that is there. I go to my web site directory (htdocs) and then a specific directory and double click on a file. Normally this file then come engages my web browser and all is well. The utility that Windows supplies does does not allow me to backup if the file size is the backup copy of the file size is larger than 4GB.     - Re Failure to boot in Safe Mode Further to my earlier messages:- My machine is running XP Pro SP3, and I recently changed my disc over to be connected via a PCI card "ITE IT8212 ATA RAID Controller". This was necessary as the motherboard does not support large discs in the bios. The system loads OK in normal mode, but will not load in Safe Mode. It gets to the state where I see a display of the drivers being loaded, but then drops back to the initial loading sequence. Further, if I try "last good", I'm pretty sure that a program error of some sort occurs (I see a quick flash of a blue screen with what looks like some error message), and again the machine drops back to the initial loading sequence. How can I diagnose these problems (I guess they are connected). I don't seem to have the option of a bootlog for the Safe mode, and, if I set it on in the boot init file, surely it will also be on for the normal load following, and overwrite the data I want to see!     - Can not enter Hibernation Mode I just upgraded my computer from 1Gb RAM to 2Gb RAM.     - Windows Start Up - Activation Issue When I start up and come to the logon screen after I click on my user name a button comes up sayings Windows must be activated before i can logon.     - Missing text on buttons and task bar I have one piece of software from HP originally installed and ran perfectlly.     - video card making noise I have an ATI Fire GL X1 AGP Pro graphics card and the fan is making noise. In fact it's been making noise now for almost a year, but it used to be just when I started it after it had been shut down for a while. Now, it's doing it constantly.     - Firewall problem. Hi. This problem had only developed recently, and I haven't changed anything I'm aware of. Can anyone throw some light please? XP pro, SP2, full updates. (Not seen SP3 at all). Dual core intel CPU, 2 gig ram, 8800GTX graphics. High spec home PC. I use Mozilla Thunderbird as my email client. It has been working perfectly under all updates for years. I use Zonealarm (free) as a firewall, and have a Sky router and broadband with it's internal firewall. Windows firewall is off. This has all been in place for a long time and nothing has been modified, moved of even had the dust wiped off. The problem is... I suddenly realised I hadn't had any mails for three days. I thought no one wanted to talk to me, so I checked with my provider to find all is OK there. Checked for updates on thunderbird, all up to date. Checked Zonealarms permissions, and thunderbird had nice big green ticks allowing access. Still no email. Disable zone alarm. Email flows. Aha, whats up with ZA I wonder? I reload it, delete the current entry for thunderbird and force it to ask for permissions again. They are granted, but still no mail through ZA. Shut ZA, mail flows. Hmmmmm. Uninstall ZA. Install another firewall, Agnitum Outpost. *IT* won't allow email either after granting permissions. Close it down, email flows. Hmmmmmmmmm. Uninstall Outpost, install ZA suite, the latest, paid for setup. Email asks for permission, but no mail! Arghhhhhhh. Shut it down, mail flows. So, what have these steps got in common? 3 firewalls, none will pass email even with permission granted, but when shut down it works ok. Not hardware related. Which software? ZA? Outpost? Or is it a windows thing? Has there been a security update that is interfering maybe? All other internet activity works OK. Whenever I open its folder, the highlighted number (in brackets) after the group's name, which shows how many messages are unread), will often not relate to the actual unread messages. For example, the highlighted number can be 24 but there can be as few as 4 or 5 actual unread messages. Sometimes, when there are no actual unread messages, there is a highlighted number showing. If I close the folder and then immediately open it, the highlighted number will often change to a different number. Using the "Catch Up" facility does not stop this happening. Now when I bootup I get the following: You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts. The Sys Config Utility is currently in Diagnostic of Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts. Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the Sys Config Utility.     - Uninstalling SP3 The sequence is like this: I installed SP3 and had no trouble doing so, or any observed irregularities thereafter. Then HP told me to upgrade the ATI BIOS in my Compaq Presario, and I did. Now the bad news: Some of the USB ports are now invisible, and HP and AMD say that's because I never upgraded to .NET Framework 2.0. I had 2.0 a while back and uninstalled it because of incompatibility with other software. It seems there's no way to live stably in this electronic world. I pulled one of my pre-SP3 clones into service, and it works with the old BIOS and I'm thinking of uninstalling SP3 from my Master Drive, along with the 'upgraded' BIOS. In truth, my system was not broke, and it didn't need fixing with either SP3 or the upgraded BIOS. So my question is, is there a safe, convenient, reasonable way to uninstall SP3?     - Draging item into folder opens that folder. I don't want it too I'm organzing HUNDREDS of graphics on my machine in Windows Explorer. I created basic folders with titles to organize them into. Now I am finding my old folders that hold my graphics and am dragging them into the newly created folders. Problem is ever time I drag one over, the new folder automatically opens up to display all the files in it. Is there a way to stop that? I have to close the folder every time because it then pushes my other folders below out of sight.     - I have starzplay and Zune downloaded, but they will not play. Help I have downloaded from Verizon, starzplay. And I just bought a Zune. I have downloaded starzplay since June 5th. And cannot get it to play. An error message comes up saying the starz tray has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have talked with verizon techs, starzplay people, and have numerous trouble tickets waiting... no luck. Then with my new Zune, last night I installed the software, then to my amazement, it said that it is finished installing and then I went to sync, and the error message came up and said that Zune has encountered a problem and needs to close.     - M/Bd Sound My drivers on my mother board for the 'onboard' sound keep disappearing. I have to put the M/Bd Cd back in and reinstall. This happens quite a lot. M/Bd L7VMM2 Socket A. I have had this board for a few years now and never given trouble like this before. I have just reformatted the drive and reinstalled XP but it is still happening.     - Monitor won't start, stays yellow on LED I changed my motherboard battery and it turned out it was dead, because the PC wouldn't fire up at all, just dead. When I went through everything you could think of, reseating the RAM, checking the power supply, changing the video card, changing the hard drive, changing the monitor and finally taking the heatsink and fan assembly off , cleaning it and reapplying the arctic silver, it turned out to be the motherboard battery. I forgot completely about that. But, when I finally replaced it and then fired it up, the monitor stayed yellow in the LED. I changed the jumper on the motherboard over to default, or to the other prong, whatever you want to call it, it has 3 prongs and I changed it over from 1 to 2 or from 2 to 3 whatever. When I did that the PC didn't even fire up. Nothing! When I changed it back to the original position it fired up, but the same problem of the monitor not working. Now there was progress because nothing was happening when you pushed the power button. Now you get the fans moving and the hard drive spinning or getting warm. Maybe it's the hard drive? I did check the hard drive and replaced it with another one. I'm going to try a new hard drive that hasn't been used before and give that a shot. One thing, if you change the motherboard battery and then you have problems you should be able to adjust the jumper on the motherboard to default and then switch it back. Even the tech at Dell said to do that and it would be ok. I guess not. Well, the motherboard is a M7VIG 400 that supports AMD processors and the chip is an AMD Sempron 2200.     - Where the new window will open I use two monitors for an expanded desktop. How do you control where new windows will open. Often I'll be using explorer to look at something, and click a link to open a new window, and it pops up on the other screen, or when doing repetitive work, the new window will begin to creep towards the edge of screen 1 after several repititions of opening and closing, to eventually begin appearing, half on one screen and half on another. When the logon screen is left ofr some time the screen blacks out and I have
to reboot using main switch.
I get a message saying Winlogon has encountered a problem and a box saying
click cancel to debug.
The debug does not cure the problem.
Also all my restore points have disappeared.
Can anyone help?
