I have tried three times to install Security Update for Windows XP
(KB944338) and three times the installation has failed.

I do not kow why as the other 3 updates offered at the same time installed
successfully.

Can someone suggest a course of action, please?

I have done a system restore and reinstalled the update and yet the same one
fails. It will download approximately 10% (according to the mouseover data
given by the update shield in the system tray) and then simply stop.

I'm afraid that if it is included as part of SP3, it's failure to install
properly will also cause SP3 to fail to install properly.

Drew

Where are you trying to get the SP3 update from? It's not due until
tomorrow. Using download sites not authorised by Microsoft (SFAIK) may
be the problem.

Your response is completely meaningless to the OPs problem.

Verify whether or not that update applies to your system.

I found a reply in the Updates Newsgroup (which I did not know existed) from
MVP Mow Green who stated that installing version 5.7 of the VB script would
mitigate the need for that update as the vulnerable DLLs were in v 5.6. I
installed v 5.7 so that now the update is unnecessary. It may have been all
along but I do not know which version of the script I had previously.

I was NOT trying to download SP3. I was concerned that it might contain this
failed update and that if it failed to install in SP3, it might cause all of
SP3 to be rejected.

Drew

Next time you have problems with downloads from Microsoft you need to
get the Error code.

Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your Windows up- to-date with
Windows Update, Review your Update History and click on the Failed Icon
(if any) in the Status Column.

Drew

I think the Error code indicates a mismatch of the version being
installed with what is already installed. I cannot locate an explanation
of the Code. You can also get information from the update log but these
can be difficult to understand. I made the point about the Error Code in
my previous post as it identifies the type of error occuring. There is
no point, however, in taking your error further as the problem has been
fixed.

If the update is for a version of the OS I do not have, I am puzzled about
why it would have been offered to me in the first place?
