Try as I might I cannot get my folders unchecked for read-only. This is a
problem when I copy files onto a DVD for backup. I am able to find the choice
(box) for unchecking for read only but it doesn't seem to "stick". What am I
doing wrong?

You say "I copy files onto a DVD"
While a DVD might be writable with suitable hardware and software
installed, i'm afraid I have to inform you that after writing, it becomes
read-only just like any other CD/DVD.
Maybe you could explain your actions/setup a little more for us?

You are doing nothing wrong. This is by design and should not pose a
problem. You can read through the information here if you wish

Harry,

After reading the article it appears that there isn't a straightforward way
to change the attribute so that it is not read-only. I guess I'm stuck with
copying the files I want to the DVD and in the event of a catastrophe on my
hard drive, retrieving them and renaming them. Is that about right?

I am recording onto DVD RW+(plus)media. So, my thought was that I should be
able to make changes on my hard drive and then update the files stored on the
DVD to match them. In preparation for this I have clicked on the properties
for the my documents folder where the the subfolder for the files are
contained that I want to back up and then de-selected "read-only". When I am
prompted to respond whether I want this action to be applied to the
subfolders I am selecting "yes".

Yet, I can go right back to the my documents folder and subfolder after
taking this action and "read only" is again selected. I'm thinking this is
why the files appear that way after they are copied onto the DVD.

Although they may appear to be, folders aren't read-only. The
read-only attribute doesn't apply to folders.

You're not doing anything wrong. That's the way it is. The files on
the DVD are read-only, because that's the nature of DVDs.

The read-only attribute on a file does NOT have the same meaning as
the read-only attribute on a folder. If the folder is customized
(non-standard view), it gets the read-only attribute set on it.

Read:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256614
And reread:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326549

If you are asking why the folders on the DVD-R[W] are read-only, well,
it is a ROM device when reading from it. When you copy files to it
(session write), everything on the ROM is read-only when reading from
it. When you copy those folders back to the hard drive, you don't
need to remove the read-only attribute on the folder. You need to
remove the read-only attribute on the *files* since the copy carries
along the file's attributes.

You aren't doing anything wrong.
Folders in XP all indicate readonly and cannot be changed. However, that's
a gross misnomer and the folder can indeed be written to and deleted from,
or moved and deleted, etc..
For folders, you can ignore the read-only tick; it doesn't mean it the
way you picture it.

It's not creating any problems, right?

And of course, anything copied FROM a CD or closed CD/DVD is going to be all
read-only. In that case you might have to make the file not readonly, but
the folders will still remain with the readonly tick. Note that it's also
grayed out inthe Properties window, indicating it cannot be changed.

I forget what it DOES mean, but you can ignore it on folders.
