    - AVG Free - Pop up question if you please Sorry if this is off topic, but I am sure there are a lot of windows users who use the free AVG 7.5 virus protection. I am running xpsp2. Is there anyway of stopping the damn thing from opening your browser and displaying an advertisement to update to the pay version 8.0. This happens when I click check for updates.     - Looking for place Where is there a good place to get info on buying a printer? I've about given up in ink carts and am thinking about color laser printers.     - Troubleshooting was Re: Reinstaling XP It's me again and my apologies for yet another omission. I just renewed my Norton anti-virus subscription and closed the Norton window. After I closed it, I could, for about three or four seconds, see through the Norton window and see the browser's text and what not behind the Norton window. I could see the four blue bars that make up the window square itself. This happens maybe twice a month with Netscape or Firefox. Does that sound like memory problem? Any more ideas on what I can do before I go whole hog and reinstall WindowsXP? I've decided to reinstall only Word and not whole version of OfficeXP I'm using Flock right now. I downloaded it a few days ago and it's leaving today. I thought I'd try it before I reinstalled FF and Netscape and it's not the browser for me at all. It allows me to do things because the programmers want me to be able do them, not because I need to. I think they're called "features." That is one of my biggest gripes about all software.     - Clock Resetting on Power Up I have a problem with the clock on my computer resetting on power up to 01 January 2002 00:00. This happens every time I start the computer and has a knock on effect to other applications. I am running a desktop with Windows XP Media Centre Edition. About four weeks ago I had a problem with pop-ups and advertisements on the computer. The clock then started to change time dramatically. As i thought I had a virus and restoring the system from a previous date would not work, I performed a system recovery. The issue with the pop-ups and advertisements has now been resolved but I was still having trouble with the clock. Then, about two weeks ago, it began to reset each time the computer was switched on. Time synchronisation will not work at all and this problem persists despite now leaving the clock on manual. Can anyone offer any advice?     - Image stacking It looks as if DarbeeVision uses some form of advanced image stacking to do their defocus and subtract to get the depth information. I looked up their US patent # 7043074 and they do have very interesting IP that applies to using image pairs, multiplets. One of their accepted claims even covers aligned image pairs (wouldn't this be the unsharp mask?). I have to go deeper into the image processing functions, though the perceptor does a really good job of finding the image detail. This entire package looks very good!     - question about xp d recovery drive i have xp home sp2 up to date hp pavillion. ive been having very slow and halting performance and heve had difficulties with some programs. ive done numerous anti-virus scans and malware scans with avg, defender, spybot, spysweeper, counterspy and have found nothing. my scan time over the past week or so went from 3:20 to 6 hours for a total scan of my entire computer. i have 71 gb of space on c drive of which 33% is used. i have 5.27 gb total space on my hp d recovery drive, with 85% used. one of my avg scans of my d drive caused spysweeper to quarantine a ps2 bug from d drive. now it seems to keep showing up during scans of d drive. is it normal to have so much of d recovery drive filled? it use to take only a few minutes to scan it now it takes an hour or more. thanks.     - What is "Reserved System Space" and what can I do with it? I'm running XP Pro, SP2. I recently did two things. First, I took a 250 GByte FAT external harddrive, backed it contents up to another drive and reformatted it as NTFS, then restored the contents. Second, I installed an incremental defrag program, Diskeeper, on my system. When I looked at the newly reformatted drive Diskeeper reports that over 10% is "Reserved System Space". This is an order of magnitude more than on any of my other 250 or 300 Gbyte drives, or even my one 500 Gbyte drive. Could this be an error in the defrag program? (The company says no.) If such a large chunk of the drive is reserved does that mean that it will never be used for my data? Is there any way to shrink this allocation? I hope this is the right place to ask this. Cyril N.     - Interesting error - can anyone help I am running XP sp2 - w/ 1 gig ram. I just installed Acrobat Standard 8 - all was well. Today it automatically updated. Now I boot and get a page that says Windows can't open file: 00014280.rbf - I tried to google the file name - no help. I have to click cancel to get to the desktop. Each reboot - I get the same error. Is any one familiar with the file? How can I stop the error page from occuring - how can I get rid of the attempt to read the file? Any help is appreciated.     - Wireless router questions I have two desktops, currently networked with a wired router and using broadband cable for the internet. I want to put a laptop in an outbuilding about 75 - 100 feet from the primary desktop. I only need internet on it - no networking. A cable of that length is not practical, so I'm assuming I need to switch to a wireless setup. The laptop has USB 1 available and an Ethernet T100 jack.     - How do I copy a .bkf file if the regular restore utility does not I have several backups on an external hard drive. I am about to reformat my pc and decided to test the backups I did regularly with the windows backup utility. They do not work. I am getting error messages saying file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used. When I click ok at that error, it comes up with a dialog box to check file location. It says the backup file cannot be found or is not the file requested. I saw a few posts that suggesting just copying the entire .bkf file. How does one do that? The only way to see that file is in the backup program. If I right click on the file, it just says catalog or delete catalog. I can see all the files within each backup but I cannot restore them. It's very frustrating as it would seem that windows would have been able to perfect their backup system by now. I have installed carbonite on all my pc's now.     - Can't print wirelessly from laptop. I had this working before but can't get it done this time. HP Deskjet 840Cconnected via single port USB print server to 3Com wireless modem/router. Desktop PC connected via ethernet cable to same, printer works OK from there but not from the laptop, it's not seeing the printer at all. I have installed XP drivers on laptop. Internet and e-mail working OK from laptop. Have enabled file and printer sharing in XP and it's the default printer. Also enabled sharing in printer properties. Can ping the print server successfully but trying to print get "document failed to print" message. Went through the troubleshooter, it didn't help. Have gone through Add Printer Wizard but get stuck on which port it's attached to, it's not attached to a port. Tried all the listed ports anyway! Also checked firewall, using the free version of Comodo. Looked here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/honeycutt_july2.mspx but it didn't help.     - FTP Program I am using XP Pro SP2. I have long been successfully using CuteFTP as my FTP program.     - Editing the right click context menu. Hi. I am learning a little about web design. I am hand coding some pages but getting '.html' files to choose between the browser and editor is a pain. I want to right click on a .html file, see 'edit' as an option and it to call NoteTabPro, the editor I am using. First off, I have a customer who has 7 PC's, at least 3 of them are COMPQ computers, and the others are DELL's and ANTEC computer. Here's what is happening... First off, Windows SBS 2000 is what each of these PC's are attached too, only (1) one of them is newer than the others.     - XP Backup - All Network Devices Grayed Out I have been running XP Backup for several years. It has been backing up My Documents from several XP and Vista boxes on my network. I did a Full backup and then Incremental backups each night. Every few months I redo the Full backup and restart the process.     - Windows XP frozen and safe mode freezes also-have unsaved files! H Hello! I have Windows XP 2005 Media version and I use AVG for virus protection. My computer is approx 18 months old and under warranty but I am not getting any help over the phone and that is all they are offering at this point. I have files saved on my computer that I had not backed up and do need to recover if I at all can. I have a flash drive ready to do that! Trust me when I say I have learned my lesson and I don't plan to save anything directly on my computer. I will use CDs and Flash Drives to maintain my files for when I need them. My computer was working fine until approx 1 week ago. When I turned on my computer, it froze (locked) up. I was able at one point during the day to get the computer to let me open up in safe mode. I performed Check Disk and it told me that the volume in C was dirty. It proceeded on to check the rest of the disk. However, when it completes and goes to the log in page and I clik on my icon, the system freezes up. Now I cannot even open up in safe mode as it freezes (locks) up in safe mode as well. Today,I called Dell as my computer is still under warranty, and was told she could help me to do a system retore and I would lose all of my files, etc. She advised that first I contact a local repair person to get them to help me to back up my files and then call her back to complete the system restore. I couln't get any other info or help and ended the phone call more confused and stressed. I have many files that I have not backed up on any other source and I know I should have done so all along. I have been able to do the F12 and all the tests pass. If I do F8 and go to prev safe configuration it will bring up the sign in page, but freezes up when I click on the icon and try to input my password. What is causing this? Is my drive corrupted? How can I fix this without losing all my files? I need my computer desparately and need your help even more. I opened the computer and cleaned it out. It still freezes up. I am at a loss and desperately need help! I am not very computer illiterate when it comes to the this type of technical part of a computer. I follow directions well and am eager for some help to get my computer fixed soon! I hope I have given enough info for someone to be able to help me fix my computer if at all possible!
