    - 'Hibernate' mode My XP seems to have a mind of its own as to shutting monitor off and later putting OS into a power-down mode of some sort, so that when I hit the power button, it all comes back on fairly quickly to where it was.     - How to pick one item only from a PPS? Hello There, I have a Windows xp Media center. I have two questions. I received from a friend a PPS consisting of 20 picture pages which follow each other and one music which accompanies the whole of the PPS. Is there a way of separating the music and also picking one page from the remaining 19?     - WkDetect.exe How do I disable the WkDetect from running on my startup? I have Microsoft Works 2002 in my Dell Computer running Windows XP. I have tried to stop the WkDetect.exe from running by disabling it on the startup in the System Configuration Utility, but it always returns.     - Spybot S&D Shutting Down Windows Whenever I run Spybot Search and Destroy (Check for Problems), it gets about halfway through the program, then my computer shuts off. I've run a virus scan with Zone Alarm, cleaned out my registry, and run AdAware. I upgraded to Spybot 1.5, same thing. I'm running Windows XP. Any suggestions?     - How To Clean Install Windows XP I want to clean install WindowsXP sp2 on a newly placed 160 GB SATA HD. This is not an upgrade, simply a redo to get back to ground zero. I use F12 to get to boot-up list choice, load the CD-ROM, but nothing happens when I hit Enter to choose to install WindowsXP sp2. Also nothing happens when I hit R to repair (or is it restore). Why? Or Work Around? Last week when the drive was blank, I formatted and installed with all the same hardware and the same Dell disc as now. What I'm doing now: With the current system up and running I insert the install disk (from Dell) in the CD-ROM drive and restart; hold F12 and choose CD-ROM drive from that list. It reaches a point where it says to install hit "Enter". (R-Repair and ?-quit) None of these work. I hit enter and wait 10 min with no change. So I shut the power off.     - internet zero traffic I have just built an AMD 64 X2 6000 and everything is A OK except for the Internet side__problem is that when trying to update my BIOS from ASUS using the auto method___ and trying to send info to Speedfan, thru the speedfan program__my Internet connection doesn't drop out but there is no traffic coming into or out of my computer___can lift up the phone and still find myself connected, but no matter how long I wait for resumption of service it will not return unless I reboot___I do not have any other problems with my dialup connection and am always connected at approx. 45Kbps and can stay connected all day with just a normal use__I.E. web surfing , mail, and downloading___I have been in touch with my ISP and he cannot fault my connection at his end_____drop outs are very few, and have not been an issue___I am using the same internal modem, HDD'drives from my original computer,the only problem I can see is the Speedfan info regarding and issue with : core temp : which is running at 71 deg Celsius __this is my new PCI-E graphics card______seems rather hot but is not giving any trouble (issues)______help required for this please With kind regards From WillofAustralia Tag: Thumbnail Preview - Video Files Tag: 314368

    - opening file types I have XP and want to change the program that opens up particular files. I have forgotten how to do this. Example: song wants to open with Quick Time and I want to open it with Media Player. I used to get the place where there is a long list of file types and you can select what you use to open them.     - validate Windows XP Hello, I recently purchased a used computer from a private party with Win. XP professional installed. I was assured it was a legitimate version of Windows. I got online and tried to update Windows with the latest service packs and during install of SP2 got a message that my software was not validated and it would not install.     - Setup oddities An XP install results in the following (partial) directory tree: \Windows \help \inf \system \system32 etc I have noticed that once everything\anything is installed there are instances where files do not end up where expected; for instance: *.chm, *.cnt, and *.hlp files not ending up in the \windows\help folder. Plus *.inf files not ending up in \windows\inf, *.dll not in \windows\system, and *32.dll not in windows\system32. Is there some kind of unknown requirement/procedure that is not being enforced/followed that causes this foolish discrepancy? It sure seems to be that it would be logical and make more sense for the files, as indicated above, to end up in the folders they seem to belong to by name and/or function.     - Standyby Fails For no particular reason, my computer (WinXP Home) suddenly won't stay in standby mode. When I give it the command (Start| Turn Off| Standby), it shuts off as expected. But about five seconds later it wakes itself up. I used to have this problem which back then was caused by a flawed HP printer driver. I'd get a message to the effect that this driver was preventing Standby. If I shut off the printer before giving the standby command, the computer would stay shut off.     - Can't find my original Windows CD I have a reoccuring serious system error and a friend recommended reinstalling Windows over the old installation. Then, if that doesn't work, he says to uninsall the old installation and reinstall Windows. The only problem is that I can't find my old CD.     - Newsgroup Postings Dates Hi: What causes all postings not to be in chronological sequence without skips in dates? I have my Read Options applicable News set to get 300 headers at a time and I do not get anywhere near that number when I click on a subscribed Newsgroup. When I view windowsxp.basics it starts with today's date and stops at 9/19/2007 and then begins again at 9/9/2007 and ends with 7/26/2007. I have never been able to figure out how to get as many postings as I want and they all be listed correctly by date without skipping dates etc. Hopefully somebody can clue me in on what to do to resolve this problem.     - Hibernation after reboot I have an acer desktop that suddenly has started going into hibernation about 30 seconds or so after a reboot. If I wake it up, it goes into hibernation again. I can boot into safe mode and it does not do this. The only thing changed recently was I hooked it up to a dsl modem from ATT and the cd which came with it said something about installing a virtual machine. I may be wrong but it seems this problem started right after that upon the first reboot. I also have no hibernation tab in power settings.     - Uncontrollable Mouse I have a Dell Laptop with Windows XP-PRO installed. Every so often, the mouse seems to have a mind of its own and moves uncontrollable up and down and across the screen.     - Bad HDD or bad 'file data' Further to a recent posting where I reported what I thought was a bad HDD I'm now having second thoughts. The problem arises whenever I try to backup C:\ to Acronis software or indeed whenever I tried to copy all of C:\ drive to another drive - the process would freeze part way through and the only way to recover was to re-boot. Today I thought I'd run the Checkdisk routine from Win XP Tools. This breaks the process down into 5 steps. The first 3 steps ran through OK but the system froze at the 4th stage of the process where the 'file data' is being checked.     - File association doesn't work I have Windows XP Professional and recently discovered that the file association of CAD .dwg files are no longer associated with inVisio my .dwg drawing viewer. The association worked previously. I then went to microsoft explorer and the Tools/folder Options/File Types menu and found that they were associated with Internet Explorer. After removing that association, I then restored the association to open the .dwg files with inVisio my drawing viewer program. The association is shown correctly under the Registered File types. When I click on the dwg extension in the list it correctly states that the dwg file opens with inVisio. However, when I click on a .dwg file, inVisio opens but states that it can not find the file. But, when I open the same file from within invisio it opens properly. I have an internal web site that requires the use of invisio to display .dwg files and they are no longer being displayed.     - wmiprvse.exe using 100% PC processes. How do I make it stop? What's the deal with wmiprvse.exe, all of a sudden, using the entire of my client's CPU processes? The only configuration change made was an install of MS Project 2007 Trial Edition. It really seems to hang up while in Outlook 2003. I just noticed and it was some time ago - I can't remember the date, so System restore doesn't look as if it'll work. I'd like to get the subdirectory back if possible - any suggestions ?     - Disk Cleanup Not Compressing Old Files? Hi: When I run Disk Cleanup I have a check beside both Compress Old Files (1,919 KB) and WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files (32KB) and it does not hang up but runs to completion. However, when I run it again immediately afterwards it identifies the same files as if nothing is happening. Not compressing or deleting any files. I an running this on a Sony desktop with MCE2005 SP2 and I also have the same problem on a Toshiba laptop running Windows XP Home Edition SP2. This is the first time that I have noticed this happening and on both computers. I am sure that I used to end up with 0KB after running Disk Cleanup, but no apparently no longer. I have videos, based on .wmv and .asf files which are not displaying a
thumbnail preview. It's just a picture of a film & note, I would prefer to
see a preview.
How do I resolve this, by enabling videos that will display a thumbnail
preview when I browse in windows explorer?

If its the black thumbnail with a "Warning: Nothing to Output Bframe decoder
lag."
Then you have to edit the video and get rid of the first frame. This can be
done in Windows Movie Maker.
