why don't I have Security tab in Windows Explorer?
I have a Windows XP Pro SP2 PC that is part of our Domain.
When I right click on a folder i.e. "C:\Program Files" and choose properties
there is NO Security tab.
There's a share tab and a General tab, and that it...
I had the PC rejoin the domain. changed mydomain.local, to just mydomain and
it went throught the steps, welcomes me to the domain and rebooted. I didn't
delete the computer in Active Directories...
I found a news group thread that says to go into Windows Explorer and from
the menu go to Tools\Folder Options\View and uncheck the option for Simple
File Sharing. That didn't give me a Security Tab. I did reboot after I made
the change.
On my personal PC same setup, the "Simple File Sharing" option is checked,
and I do have a security tab.
Can someone point me in the right direction to resolve this?
Thanks

Explorer.exe slows/freezes my pc experience!
I have Windows XP SP2; 512 MB RAM; 40GB Harddisc space (maximum; about 12 GB
left) and 1,0 Ghz CPU.
Last month I had discovered that I had about 16 viruses and trojans on my pc
when I had them removed with Adaware (The updated Mcafee VirusScan did
NOTHING!) and used a "registry cleaner" too. (I made no backup, to save some
of my 40GB diskspace)
But now sometimes when I reboot, explorer.exe will fail to initiate (with an
error message) and when it does, it slows my pc after some minutes.
Examples: when I am surfing the net (or moving through my folders and files)
a website (or folder or file) will take 1 minute to load or would freeze. But
when I use taskmanager to shut down "explorer.exe." the surfing speeds up.
And when I restart explorer.exe I can once again move through my folders and
files again...but only for about 15-20 minutes. Because it will freeze again!
When I look in taskmanger I see that explorer.exe is adding 4 kb of RAM
every second, yet the entire windows explorer is frozen. (no way to go to my
documents or even activate the "start" button! Unless if I shut down
explorer.exe then resatrt it...)
Is there a way to fix this...or is my RAM and Processor Power too low for
today's standards??? Or has the virus/trojans/malware done something? (or
Adaware and the registry cleaner) Tag: Thank you Tag: 321347

Reinstalling updates
I am having to reinstall all my updates. 84 of them. They all download and
start to install. All goes well until I get to #75 which is the IE-7 update.
It will not install. It starts to update and then continues to run for

complete the install. This is the third time I've tried it. Can anyone tell

TweakUI for XP Produces Registry Error
I use TweakUI for XP SP 2, and I was having trouble keeping the folder
settings.
So, I opened the registry and looked at what TweakUI had entered. It was
NOT the same as what Microsoft had recommended on their website.
The numbers were correct and the placement were correct, BUT, where the
correct way to have the entries is BagMRU Size, TweakUI has it entered it as
Bag MRU Size - with a space inbetween the Bag and the MRU.
After hand correcting this, my folders are now keeping their settings.
Is there anyone else that has noticed this error, and if so, is there any way
to advise Microsoft's TweakUI developers of this of this error in their
program?

XP speed question
Looking for some ideas .... I am using XP Home w/ SP2 on a Dell w/ 1g ram on
a 1.7 g P4. Computer is a Dimension 8200.
I do have a fair amount of software on the machine - so the boot time & save
settings time is long. It would be nice to speed that up - but I am tolerant
of that problem.
What would delay the opening of a window - or the saving of a file? It is
pretty clear that the computer slows down at times. I am noticing it more
now that I am using Dragon Naturally Speaking Pref 9. It takes an
esxtraordinary amount of time to process and type the dictation. Other
functions seem slow at times as well. I am using Norton as an antivirus
program (2004) - and I have noticed that Norton can slow things down
scanning a file.
I am looking globally for reasons the machine is slow - not all the time -
but on occasion. Another thing I noticce is there is hard drive activity
after the desktop appears - and looks ready to go - and when I look at the
task monitor - the usage is by normal things like explorer airsvcu - and
svchost - etc.
Would it make sense to create users for different kinds of use - would that
prevent all of the drivers from being loaded (if that is the problem).
Currently I have one user.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Tag: Thank you Tag: 321286

3. This laptop has no NTBACKUP modules and instead

(The two WinXP instal disks are in some proprietory format,
one big file each, and I believe the online manual says their

do not need to.)

Sansa e280: Synch cable doesn't charge
I've had my Sansa e280 for several months now, with no major issues.
I just plugged the cable in to recharge the battery (it's at about
50%) and it's not being recognized. The OS doesn't show it as a
removable drive like it usually does, the Sansa doesn't show that it's
plugged in to a USB port and it's also not charging. As far as the
Sansa and the OS are concerned, there's no cable at all.
This is my work laptop, and I've charged with no problem in the past.
The last time it worked was about 2 weeks ago. There may have been
some updates to the laptop that I'm not aware of, but I know the USB
port works because I had a flashdrive in it earlier this morning.

Weird boot problem
Hi,
I have an HP Pavillion DV9731CA laptop (DV9000 series). The laptop has
Windows Vista Home Premium installed. 2 gig ram, 250 gig HD, Nvidia
8400 video card.
I was installing a network drive (Mediagate player) and the laptop
stopeed working. I am not sure it had anything to do with the
installation of the drive.
What is happening is that Windows is booting up, gets to the point
where mouse pointer is visible, it says "please wait" and it keeps on
going through this cycle, without the actual login screen. If I
restart, I can get in via safe mode, but even there the explorer does
not open up, so the only thing I can do is go ALT CTRL DEL and get to
task manager where I can start a new task of Firefox or open a Window
explorer window (which sometimes closes itself). I can connect to the
internet, I can access the hard drive and run most applications, which
are allowed by safe mode. What is important is that the drive exists,
boots, is visible and accessible.
I do no have the recovery disk, so I ordered it via HP site (will get
it this week), but my other copies of XP and a modified Vista CD, if
loaded, get to a point where they can be installed, but tell me that
the hard drive is not visible. Same goes for a D with Ubuntu (Linux),
it loads itself into memory, it can see that the hard drive is there,
but does cannot access it.
With an Ultimate boot CD, I can see the partition, can see the disk
name and size, but cannot reformat it. I thought it was a problem
with the HD, so copied everything from there to an external HD (so the
data is there and it is accessible!), but replacing the HD with a new
one did not help - it does not see the new HD and dos not allow me to
install a new system (XP or Vista). So it is not a problem with the
hard drive. I thought it could be that somehow in Vitsta the network
hard drive I was trying to add affected the BIOS - which is my only
real theory at this point, but I cannot flash the BIOS in Safe Mode,
which is my only method of accessing the system at this point, and I
do not know a manual way of updating/resetting the BIOS. The only
place that I found to update my BIOS was an HP download page, that
installs a Winflash utility, ut it tells me that it cannot run in safe
mode.
BIOS is accessible if I press F1 during start up, but it is very
basic, not like the ones on older PCs - I cannot set master or slave
drives, etc. I tried installing XP on an external USB drive, but it
does not boot from there, even when I can tell the system to use USB -
it reads the drive, but fails to load Windows.
So here is my dilemma: Hard drive is there, but it is accessible only
in safe mode, not through dos apps, or any other way. Bios can only be
updated in real mode, but I can only boot in safe mode with limited
capabilities. It seems that he problem is the BIOS settings as it is
the only thing that keeps some settings after the hard drive is
replaced.
Any thoughts of advise? Any alternative ideas? Any thoughts on how to
manually reset the BIOS? I read up and others had this similar issues
int eh past with HP and other laptops and they said it was a result of
an ptomatic update from Microsoft or HP, which is possible in case, as
I do not know if the new network drive intallation was the actual
cause of this.
Thanks

Strange Boot Problem
Just put this machine together and installed windows xp pro. MSI P4M80
Motherboard with sata. Installed a Western Digital 80GB Hard drive, 1GB of
DDR2 memory. Board had integrated lan, video and audio. Before installing
windows, entered bios and disabled sata since I am using an IDE drive.
Windows installed fine but after completion when it was time to reboot I
receive the following message:
Boot from CD:

VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter v2.42
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM
Disk Boot failure, insert system disk and press enter
I have gone back to BIOS and disabled the Other feature under boot sequence.
I have tried disabling the onboard ethernet but the same mnessage appears.
If I reset boot sequesnce to hard drive first, I get the same message.
I believe hard drive is working properly because if I insert windows CD the
machine will open to windows, and I have successfully installed other
programs at that time. I have looked to see if there was some kind of PXE
setting to disable in the bioas but none exists.
Please ... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lost IE and Outlook Express connection
A friend suggested I look for help here.
My internet connection drops out after about 15 mins if I don't keep
refreshing or loading new pages or checking for new e-mail. Anything
that doesn't need an internet connection keeps working fine on the
computer.
It's a new system running WinXP with all the patches. It was working
fine until Sat.
My ISP - Shaw - says the modem is fine and it is giving them no error
messages. An ipconfig when the problem occurs shows a valid Shaw IP
address. We deleted Winsock and rebooted but that didn't help
either. I didn't install or activate anything for at least a couple
of days before the problem occurred.
I had a Linksys router (wired) installed but disconnected it because
my ISP figured that was the problem. It wasn't. Haven't reconnected
it yet.
I'm running System Suite 8 and using their firewall and AV. But even
if I disable both of those the problem still reoccurs. A reboot
always solves the problem temporarily. Nothing else seems to.
If I let IE hang for a while it returns the message that the web page
can not be displayed. Sometimes I get an error saying windows can't
find an IP address. If I use the repair option it still can't find an
IP address.
I took the CPU back (since it's new) and had the tech check
everything. No hardware problems, no viruses they or I could find,
nothing. And they couldn't reproduce the problem. But they are
working off a network using a setup different from mine.
I figured it was probably an XP corruption or glitch somewhere. And I
read some other messages similar to this but they were about wireless
networks or problems a bit different than mine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Upgrade to XP Pro under a Volume License
In the past we were purchasing PCs with Win XP Home (OEM) and upgraded our

we will have to purchase XP Pro AND "upgrade" to Vista Business then

Help and Support not working
I open H&S with Windows+F1, then type in my search "registry" (no
quotes). The client area goes completely white and H&S becomes non-
responsive; I have to kill it with Task Manager. This is repeatable:
H&S comes up normally, but dies when I try to do a search.
I did some googling and found Kelly's Korner #235, but it says
"Restore H&S Service" and there's no explanatory text, just a
registry file. Before applying a registry patch, even from a known
site, I'd like to know that this is actually supposed to fix *this*
problem with H&S and not some other problem, and I'd fee better with
some explanation of what caused the problem so I don't do it agan.
This is XP Pro SP2. I've never run any kind of registry cleaner. And
I don't have Windows media because Acer doesn't provide them, not
even at extra charge.

Registry Virus Removal Software Review
The latest statistics have shown that about 96% of computers have
partially corrupted and other unsafe files on their hard drives which
is the primary cause of operating system errors. You see, basically
whenever you add and remove software from your computer your windows
registry is prone to become fragmented and full of errors due to the
constant changes in the configuration settings. This leads to a large
amount of partially uninstalled program files still littered over your
hard drive which causes the performance of your computer to decline
severly. Failure to repair these problems can result in total system
failure and the blue screen of death where you will no longer be able
to access the operating system and will have to reformat your hard
drive.
Why Registry Errors Occur
Registry errors occur mainly as a result of an excess number of unused
entries in the system. As time passess and you utilise your computer
more often you will add and remove software programs which leave
residuals that will litter your hard drive and cause it to become
slower. These partially uninstalled programs will take up memory usage
and cause your pc to become sluggish. Spyware infections can also
corrupt registry keys in which you may also have to make use of a
spyware removal program to help the process....

Add/Remove Program Can't Remove an App
I must have manually removed an old app (Sonic MyDVD - probably not supported
in XP) but there's still an entry for MyDVD in the Control Panel | Add/Remove
Programs list. I tried to remove it but a popup with the app name displayed:
An installation support file could not be installed. The parameter is
incorrect.
KB310587 seemed to apply. I used regedit to locate the occurrence of MyDVD
in the uninstall portion of the registry, exported it (for backup), then
deleted the entry. I'm about to close regedit, reboot, and see if the
undesired entry in the Add/Remove Programs list is gone. Does it sound like
I've done the right thing?
Also, I think I've deleted all residual folders and files on the HDD related
to MyDVD, but there are several other occurrences of "MyDVD" in the registry.
Is there anything to be gained by cautiously deleting these occurrences too?
I never intend to try using this app again.
Thanks a lot for any suggestions!

occur. This only started happening within the last week. A system restore does
not fix the problem. I have googled it, and have found only one other similar
posting with no solution.
I am attaching a small .jpg file to show the error message.
Does anyone know what this means? Tag: Thank you Tag: 321117
Explorer opens on start-up
Just recently, whenever I reboot, Windows Explorer opens on start-up, and
shows the content of the system32 directory.
It is not in my start-up folder, and I cannot see anything in MSConfig to
make it do this. Does it indicate an infection of some kind on the PC? Norton
does not find any problems.
I have XP Home with SP2.
Can anyone tell me how I can stop it doing this?
Many thanks! Tag: Thank you Tag: 321111
Windows Xp Home

needed upgrade or is it for a diffrent os. Tag: Thank you Tag: 321108
Windows Explorer Search Utility -- Recently Changed?
Whether using Win2k or WinXP, I've always set Windows
Explorer to work in "Classic" style.
I often use the search facility in WE to find files in
nested directories, and never had a problem.
But a few days ago, searching for some system files, I
wasn't finding anything! Finally I discovered that the
"Advanced Options" box wasn't checked, and this controls
whether or not searching sub-directories is turned on.
I've never had to fuss with this before, but a few months
ago, I installed TweakUI for XP. Could TweakUI be the
culprit? Or is this something slipped into one of the
recent Security Updates?
