System Restore disabled on reboot

I am running XP Home with SP3. I have a problem that existed before
installing SP3.. When I rebooot the PC and goto System restore, I get the
prompt that tells me that SR has been turned off. I go to the SR screen and
enable it, create a restore point and it all works fine.

When I reboot the PC, SR gets switched off somehow and it goes back to the
SR turned off message. I have inspected logs using event viewer and after
reboot their is an entry " Event 116 System Monitoring disabled on reboot".

This happens every time I reboot.

Any ideas appreciated

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements? What firewall
are you using?

Please post a complete copy of the Event Viewer Report.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Ali

Researching your Event Viewer report does not yield any information.
However, it is an Information Report which would not attract so much
attention as an Error or Warning Report.

I cannot find any firm information on the relationship between Microsoft
System Restore and McAfee. I read the other day that some McAfee
software packages include their own BackUp and Restore utility. If you
have this the chances are that it turns Microsoft System Restore off
with a resultant loss of all existing restore points. Does your McAfee
have this backup and restore feature?

Thanks , this is a good point. I am using Mcafee back up and restore. Last
week I emailed McAfee and got this response.

" am sorry to say that this issue is not caused by McAfee. Please check that
you have installed any third party anti virus software in your computer.

Let us disable all McAfee and check whether the issue persists or not.
Please follow the steps to disable McAfee.

Open security center>>Computer and files>>configure>>virus protection is
enabled>>please disable all that features shown there.

Open security center>>Internet and network>>configure>>firewall protection
is enabled>>please disable all the features shown there.
After disabling this please check whether the issue still shown on your
restart, if it persist it is clear that McAfee is not causing this issue.

Please make sure that you are re-enabling McAfee after checking this.

We hope that weâ??ve answered your questions effectively. If not, feel free to
contact support again. Please include all previous correspondence when
replying.""

I tired these steps and the problem persisted. I also uninstalled all the
Mcafee software and the problem remained.

I guess I could configure out mcafee backup and resore and see what happens
then.

Ali

There are other third party programmes that produce this sort of result
but if you are using McAffe exclusively then it is likely McAfee that
has caused the problem. You probably need to reinstall System Restore
but take as McAfee wil most like put you back where you were.

This may not solve the problem but have you try installing and using
ERUNT? This program backs up your registry.
