That's always been there, the Run MRU's (Most Recently Used) are stored at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

If you look at a new installation of Windows, you will
find no apps listed. The / Start / Run procedure records
(and retrieves on demand) the last 8 or 10 filepaths you
typed there.

It's been there as long as I can remember, but it doesn't hold anything.

It did, at one time, but even then only sporadically. Then something
turned a BUNCH of my configurations upside down and no more pick list
contents. I'd LOVE to have a funcitoning pick list there, but - I don't.
Hence my question. Why is it even there if you can't depend on it?

My question assumed everyone's pick list remained forever empty like mine.
I asked about this somewhere a long time ago and was told it was always
cleared by something or other. So why have it if it's always cleared?

A better question would be: Why is the pick list on my computer always
empty?

That is of course the OP's computer. I don't have the OP's problem.

If you have TweakUI from Microsoft installed on your computer, check to see if
Clear document history on exit is checked under the Explorer branch.

The entries in the Run box will be deleted when you restart your computer if you
have ClearRecentDocsOnExit set to 1 in this registry key.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Take a look at this article for more info on the subject.

Start Menu RUN history (RunMRU) is cleared on every restart

Top posting to follow last poster's preference.

As John John(MVP) has already explained, the "pick list", as you call it, is
just a list of MRU's, i.e. a list of Start/Run commands that you have
"recently" used.

For example, if you run the CMD command, then run the Regedit command, then
Clipbrd command, you should find that you have created a "pick list"/MRU
list of these 3 commands.

Most likely, you have some program (I have CCleaner) which clears this list
on startup or shutdown or some other time, hence the reason you do not have
a permanent "pick list".

At least, that's the way it appears to me. But I may not be quite fully
understanding your question?

Joe

If it's being deleted then you may be using one of of these "tweaking"
tools or MRU cleanup tools that clean it up automatically, or you may
have ClearRecentDocsOnExit enabled.

This is one of those "unusual" situations where it helps to know what you
are doing. I'll be sure AVG doesn't delete MRU's. Thanks.

You're welcome. By the way, I hate it when that list gets
"inadvertently" cleaned out! But I'm not too fussy about the way IE
sticks everything it think's it should in there!

I hardly ever use it but sometimes you have no other choice, you don't
have to use it much to have it clutter up the run list!
