I have 2 DVD drives and both have stopped playing certain DVDs, mainly retail
ones but also some DVD games. I have no problem with CDs and most Copied
DVDs. I have tried updating the firmware. I have all the codecs I need and
i'm using power DVD. I have tried a full system recovery, still no joy and I
have not made any changes to the hardware. I used to have no problem using
either drive to play DVDs and both have went at the same time so I don't
think it's a hardware issue. I have looked everywhere for help and no one
has any answers. Can somebody out there please help?

Are the failing DVDs clean and unscratched?

Yes and they work fine in a normal DVD player. I presume the drives don't
need cleaned either as both developed the same problem at exactly the same
time

How about a visit to the drive's manufacturer's website. Maybe a clue
there, i.e., driver.

I went to the HP website, (it's a pavillion t340.uk if that makes any odds)
and downloaded firmware for the drives, bios and something I can't remember
the name of but it controls IDE channels among other things. Nothing seems
to work. All the software I'm using is the same as when the drives both
worked. This one has really got me and I've seen the same problem posted in
other forums but never any answers

Have you opened the box, disconnected the cable from each
drive and from the motherboard (one disconnect and
reconnect at a time), inspected for dust, and firmly
reconnected?

So the problem is with "some DVD's" but not all DVDs. If the drives only
have problems with certain DVDs then I would see the disc as the problem
rather than a problem with the drives.
