This appears to coincide with upgading AVG to version 8 and removing a Norton virus guard that appeared on my desktop for unknown reasons (used ADD/REMOVE programs) I have tried SYSTEM RESTORE to before dialogue box appeared but with no luck. Restore now removed. Can anyone advise of what module is, is it requied and if so how do I get it back. Or if not requires how to get rid of dialog box every time I turn PC on.     - Sliding systray - possible to get static, stable systray back? I don't know what I did. I rarely have that kind of thing happen anymore, but there you go. My systray is no longer visible at all. I have to hover the mouse pointer over the area for it to slide into view. But the minute mouse pointer moves out of general area, it slides closed again. Very annoying. I've googled, but absolutely nothing has come up so far on how to fix. I've rebooted and problem persists so it seems a setting may be been toggled somehow (hoping that's all it is, anyhow). How can I fix this, please?     - Auto assign drive letters I have had this issue with several Windows XP workstations. Whenever I plug in a external storage device like a thumb drive, it assigns a drive letter that is already in use by a mapped drive.     - Question about Backup Program I successfully installed the backup program by double-clicking on NTBACKUP.MSI and was able to back up my data, but on pg. 925 of Robert Cowat's book on Windows XP Home Edition there is a statement : "And don't forget to mark the System State check box to protect your Registry and system configuration".     - Autoplay Feature has Stopped Working The autoplay feature seems to have stopped working on a computer. Autoplay is enabled for all drives including the fixed drives (according to Tweak UI). No matter how I confugure Properties->Autoplay nothing happens when the drive is "activated" - i.e. a DVD is inserted or a camera's plugged in, or a removale disk is attached. If I configure the optical drive to start WMP when a DVD is inserted nothing happens, if I configure it to offer a range of options nothing happens. This used to work I'd insert a DVD and WMP would play it. Same thing with my camera, it used to bring up the camera and scanner wizard - this does not happen any more, nor do I get a range of options. In other words the whole Autoplay feature seems to have stopped working. The OS/Version is XP-Home SP2 - according to Windows Update the only missing updates are SP3 and Silverlight, it's hard to believe that either of those would fix the problem.     - Making an XP reinstallation disc It used to be that manufacturers supplied a copy of Windows that you could use to reinstall the OS in case it got messed up. That seems to have gone out of style. My IBM ThinkCentre desktop has a hidden hard-drive partition with the files needed to reinstall XP. But what if the hard-drive goes bad after the warranty is expired? It looks like I lose the XP license. It seems unreasonable. So I want to make a CD or DVD that would reinstall XP---not backup all my documents---I would make a separate backup of my own data. I just want to be able to restore the OS to a clean state starting from an optical disc just as people used to do with the OEM reinstall disc. How can somebody do that?     - task bar and more disappeared Ok i know that this is an easy fix- but i dont remember the remedy. My task bar, quick launch, and the entire blue bar that is supposed to be at the bottom of the desktop, vanished. I went to properties and the enable quick launch (for exam) was already checked.     - help, access denied I had a motherboard crash. Putting together a new machine. Inxtalled XP Pro on a new hard drive in the new machine. All fine. Then moved the old hard drive to the new machine with all the data and files. For some reason, I can't access some files I need. Like the database from Clipmate or any files under the identity of the administrator of the old machine, which is the same as the new one. Is there a way to get past whatever it is that's stopping me. The error is 'access denied,' etc........ Is there a hack that can get me into my own files???     - Deleting Windows/ uninstall files for updates. In the Windows/ folder there are many files with scarey names like $ntServicePackUninstall$ and $NtuninstallKB885836$. Most of them are a year or more old. I understand that they are needed if you want to uninstall an update. I recently installed SP3, which went off flawlessly (to my delight). I understand that SP3 includes all the prior updates. Does this mean that I can safely delete all those files except the one for SP3? What about SP1 and 2, are they also included in SP3? Is it okay to delete SP 1 and 2? Most of the files are listed in blue, which I understand means that they are compressed. Do you delete a compressed file the same way you delete a regular file? If it's not a good idea to delete them, is there some way I can hide them so they don't display when I open the Windows/ folder? I have lots of space on the HD, so I don't really have to delete them.     - Should I delete ZLT####.TMP FILES? In the C:\Windows\temp folder there are some 400 files named zlt plus a number with the TMP extention.     - Unable to Download I use Windows XP Service Pack 2 and IE7. I have been trying to download Flash Player, I click on download and am asked to add the ActiveX Control which I do. If i open a program window e.g. internet explorer, all is well for a short time, then the window refuses to respond to any command even to close. I then open prog man with ctrl alt del then close it by clicking twice on the 'x' close box(it won't close on the first click) then all is well again for another length of time.     - Can I edit what's displayed in the "Type" column of Details view? Somewhere along the upgrade path Irfanview not only assigned itself to open almost all image files but started changing what they're called in the folder details view, from JPG to "Irfanview JPG File", BMP to "Irfanview BMP File", etc. Apart from the effrontery of the act, it also means I have to keep that column 9 letters wider than I'd like, sheer wastage since I can already tell it's an "Irfanview ... File" by the little red logo attached in the name column. Where can I edit these back to display simply JPG File, etc? I've looked in Folder Options / File Types, and the files are all JPG File, etc. rather than the annoying "Irfanview xxx". (I do find the "Irfanview xxx" under Associated File Types if I want to define a new registered file type in the Create New Extension box. But that doesn't explain why, for instance, JPG shows as simply "JPG File" in Folder Options but "Irfanview JPG File" in the Explorer window itself.) And yes, I know I can set the Name column to include the full extension, but do like to have the Type column as well, for instance to sort by type or just as a cleaner visual cue.     - McAfee For several years I had the entire Norton secuity system installed on my computer and I removed it because it made everything work slower. Then I had the free AVG anti-virus program on but was afraid that it was letting certain things in. So, recently, I put on the entire McAfee plan which was free from my high-speed internet provider. But things seem a little slower with it, but only at times, such as when I have several Internet Explorer windows open and many tabs open on, as well as several programs running.     - Svchost.exe generating problems - PC is hanging - have to reboot Hi On our network with about 25 PCs (all with XP SP2 (one with SP3 - also has problem)), some of the PCs have problems with Svchost.exe. The error message they get is: "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". If I look into the error signature details I find: szAppName: svchost.exe szAppVer: 5.1.2600.2180 szModName: TSP5.tsp szModVer: 5.0.980.0 Offset: 0000e203 After the report has been sent to Microsoft the PC is hanging and the PC must be rebooted. Before sending the report you can continue working on the PC (leave the error message on the desktop) The strange thing is that the PCs some time stops with the error message at the same time. I have searched out Exchange/File server to se if there was any related error messages, but I can't find. I have disabled "Windows update" on two of the PCs without any result. (Have manually run Windows update to be sure they are up to date). I have also installed SP3 on one of the PCs, and still that PC has problems. The PCs has been scanned with Windows Defender, Trend Micro Anti virus, and Spybot S&D. No problem can be found. I have searched the Internet without find any solution. Some products are advertising for "solving all svchost.exe problems" (True Sword). I am not sure if I can trust the product (True Sword), as it for me is not a known product. This turned out to be the wrong way because the process didn't put any boot files onto the CD. I recently installed a new larger WD hard drive, and usig the sw that came
with it, I copied the contents of my old drive to my new drive, then
reformatted the old smaller drive. As a result, there are a lot of program
icons (eg Word, Adaware, etc) that have gone away, and have beem replaced by
the default Windows icon. How can I get the original progrma icons back?

By reinstalling the programs themselves on to the newer drive. Merely
copying files over isn't enough. Hopefully "the sw that came with it" would
have explained this.
