    - Who's accessing the net? Is there a program, someplace, that will tell me which of my files is accessing the internet while I'm doing something else -- almost anything else?     - Windows Explorer stops responding Clean install of XP Pro SP2 - no patches, no AV. Have added to a domain and can browse the domain shares. If I right-click or double left-click a file the instance of Explorer stops responding. This doesn't happen when I access files on the local hard drive.     - Removing "Install" from "Shut Off" icon I have purchased a new notebook running XP Home SP2. I have set my Windows Updates options to "notify but do not download/install". When I use "Start >> Turn Off" to shut down the system, I notice that the "Turn Off" icon that next appears in the "Turn Off Computer" pop-up has a "Security Center" shield attached to its upper right corner and a text that explains that Windows will install downloaded updates when the icon is clicked unless I select the option (also in this text) shut down with installing. My desktop (running the same OS) does not have this option and I would like to remove it from my notebook. I cannot locate any setting that would do so. The Windows firewall is disabled in favor of another firewall. I am the only user account on the system so I assume that I have administrative rights.     - XP Backup Program I'm looking for opinions on the "Ntbackup.exe" program built in to XP Pro. Has anyone used this? I need to do more frequent backups for my business and I'm thinking of purchasing an external hard drive and do the automated backups that XP Pro provides. Has anyone got any experience with this program as far as restoring from it? Or are there suggestions that might work better.     - Missing addresses in Word mail I was trying to apply an address from my mail address book to a letter I am about to send out and discovered that all of the addresses have been wiped out. All that is left is an Outlook Express list of my email addresses. I believe that I have these addresses saved a s part of a back-up, but I can't figure out where to look for them. A couple of days age I rtried to install outlook express 7, but had to restore the computer when it replaced my email addresses with an old email address book.     - Cannot get out of safe mode I have recently returned home from being away for 5 months to find that the computer was running in safe mode. I have asked the other members of my family what had happened and they didn't believe that they had done anything to cause it although they had removed some programmes. I have tried starting up the computer, tapping F8 and starting windows in normal mode which didnt work, and then i tried changing settings on msconfig which didn't work.     - Some websites now not opening properly I am running XP with plenty of memory, etc on the computer. When I now open some websites that I have used for years, I don't get all of the graphics and get a not at the bottom, "Page opened with some errors." These are trusted, reputable websites I have opened before with no problem. Last week I down loaded Spybot. Could that be the culprit? Other than that no changes.     - copying files over 64 kb in size to My Book gets "The request could I've been trying to copy files to a western digital 1 terabyte external hard drive. When I try to copy a file larger then 63kb I get the following message: "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." The drive works fine on another computer.     - Coosing default Bullets Does anyone know how to choose the default bullets? My default bullets got changed so that the "Close Windows" "X" that normally appears in the Top Right Corner of each window is now a box and arrows on menus are now little mouse symbols. How is this controlled? It is not in the "Appearance" menu and it is not a problem with the loaded fonts. Is there supposed to be a "Bullets" subkey in my registry, and, if so, where?     - labels under desktop icons I used to have tannish-gray horizontal boxes with black outlines and black letters under my desktop icons, and I liked them. About a week ago, after a Windows update, these changes to bright neon blue boxes with white letters and without borders.     - Microsoft Document Imaging (MDI) just Discovered I am brand new to the built-in XP Microsoft Docuemnt Imaging tool. It is my understanding now that a multiple sheet FAX (tif) or several scanned document may be manipulated by the XP MDI tool. Until now, I have been scanning individual sheet documents and saving as jpeg files with page 1, page 2, etc. With MDI, will I be able to merge additionally scanned in document sheets into an existing MDI file ? For example, I try to keep a running file on one of the several medical clinics that I visit. Once I have scanned in several sheets and closed the first MDI file, will I be able to append additional informational sheets into that existing MDI file ? Also, are the files created with use of MDI readable from other image viewers, such as IrfanView: will either application be able to pull in and display their inddependantly produced TIF files ? Also, is is possible to get a TIF image that is saved on disc into a MDI (empty) window, e.i., without scanning the original paper document? Thanks.     - Turning off the hard disk Hi, I would like to save power and also not to repeat having to replace both my fans, as happened on my previous computer, by using the "turn off hard disk" feature reached from "Control Panel"> "Power Options" after 1 hour, say, but my book does not explain what do I do to "get the power back on". 1) Do I just press a key on the keyboard, say 2) Is the state of the system then still there so I can continue my work or do I need to do something else ?     - Why The Need To Reboot ? I was on a website when I clicked a link and could go nowhere. Got the message "Firefox cannot find the server...." Also, received the same message trying to return to my homepage. So, Closed the browser, deleted cookies, history, etc. and tried to return to my homepage. Got the same message as above.     - Monitor Settings? I am using Windows XP Home Edition, and browse with both IE7 and the latest version of FireFox. While adjusting my monitorI must have chosen a setting that caused a display problem. For example, if I browse to www.clusty.com I am unable to view the blue bar or the "Clusty" patch logo - but everything else is still there. Another example is www.abstractfonts.com. With this website I can view everything except the font list examples. Instead of sample fonts I only see empty white boxes where the sample fonts should be.     - Ethernet Adapters A while back my onboard VIA Compatable Fast Ethernet Adapter stopped working, so I went out and bought a new one.. a Linksys LNE 100TX (v5) Fast Ethernet Adapter which is enabled in device manager..     - .NET Framework Question I'm running WXP Pro Version 2002 Svc Pack 2. I just attempted to install SyncToy V1.4, but a window popped up advising me "This setup requires the .NET Framework version 2.0.50727." It offered me a link, but the link was broken and I was redirected to a web page with multiple choices, none of which I understand.     - IE7 This is a continuation of a post on 3-7-08 with PA Bear. Greetings: I just installed the new IE7 on my Dell Dimensions 2400. It works, but not too well. It has slowed my computor down. When I click Start it is several seconds before the menu appears. Sometime it will not appear at all. When it does and I am able to open a program it will open partiatially along with two or three other programs that I did not ask for. They are in pieces. They will not close. Then I may get a box telling me the program is not responding. I just put a new Seagate Hard Drive in for these same reasons. I was advised by members of the Dell forum that the HD was the culprit. It apparently was not. It appears IE7 is the culptit. It works properly with IE6. I like IE7 and would like to keep it but not under these conditions. Can anyone advise me about how to make the IE7 work properly. Your help will be appreciated. Thank you. James I just put a new Seagate Hard Drive in for these same reasons.     - Hardware Monitor found an error Hi..this morning after waking up, I found my computer frozen, and was forced to at first restart which let me to a screen that told me Hardware Monitor found an error and to click F! to continue.. I was not able to get F1 to respond, and after trying a couple of times to turn off my computer manually, I was finally able to get to a screen where Chkdsk was checking for errors.. it seemed to fix them, finding several minor errors and even an error in a gif file. Can someone tell me if there is something I can do to fix the problem or if chkdsk corrected the errors, and is everything ok now??? :) sure hope so! Appreciate any response, thanks Rainy..     - Windows won't recognize "System and Applications Recovery " cd Boy. am I ticked. It recognizes everything else, but not this one. The media must be broken or whatever. I was going to try to reinstall WinXP, but that's the only disk I have. I can't think of anything else to do. Can anyone suggest any options?     - Missing dll files in Temp folder Windows XP SP2 - 1 user account and 1 admin account The user account was infected on 2 April, probably with virtumonde. Between Norton and SpyBot it seems to have been fixed. In the course of working the problem, I manually deleted numerous files from various temporary folders, especially exe and dll files modified at the time of infection. Now when I log on to that account, I get three small pop-up windows alerting me that files C:\Docume~1\Barry\LOCALS~1\Temp\hgGyWOFu.dll C:\Docume~1\Barry\LOCALS~1\Temp\Yjgldenv.dll C:\Docume~1\Barry\LOCALS~1\Temp\awtutUNh.dll could not be found. I assume no real system file is ever stored in a user's temporary folder. Everything seems to work after acknowledging the alerts so I'm hoping these files were part of the virus. I assume the alerts are the result of some residual crap in the registry. Can someone tell me how to get rid of the alerts?     - XP Installation problems- please help! I have a laptop which was runnning Windows 2000 and I'm trying to install Windows XP on it. I did manage to get it on but I must have made some mistake somewhere as on startup it was giving me the option to boot into either XP or Windows 2000. Before explaining the current status I should just explain exactly what I'd like to acheive ideally. One hard drive (C) with the full amount of storage space (10GB) running Windows XP. That's it! Nothing more, nothing less. So I have tried to do a few things- deleting partition, re-installing XP and now I'm really confused! When I startup now, I get 3 choices from the boot screen: Windows XP Home Edition Windows 2000 Professional Windows XP Setup If I select Windows XP Home Edition it says: Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. COuld not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the Windows documemntation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information. If I select Windows 2000 Professional it gets me into Windows 2000. If I go to Computer Management>Disk Management there it reads: C: 5GB FAT32 - Primary Partition Unallocated 4.36GB Right-clicking on either of these doesn't give me an option to either delete or format. If I try Windows XP Home Edition Setup it says: Welcome to Setup To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER Insert the CD labeled Windows XP Home Edition CD ROM I then put in the disk and press enter. I then get the following screen: The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer 9586MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MPR] C: Partition1 (VAIONOTE) [FAT32] 5122MB 979MB free Unpartioned space 4463MB If I press 'D' on C, it says: Setup is unable to perform the requested operation on the slected partition. This partition contains temporary Setup files that are required to complete the installation. 'D' doesn't work on the unpartitioned space. If try to set up on C, it says: The partition you have chosen is too full to contain Windows XP which requires a drive with at least 1033MB of free disk space. I also have the following options: To repair a Windows XP intallation using Recovery Console, press R To quite Setup without installing Windows XP press F3 So, what do I do????!!!     - Internet time Hi, My Dell XP (0.5 year old) has a problem in its clock. It always gives me wrong time. It happens even after I manually change the time. Eventually I have to download a utility that is scheduled to automatically adjust time several times a day. But still the computer still switches time to a wrong one sometimes. I try to check and uncheck different options (e.g. "automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes", "automatically adjust clock via internet") in XP's "date and time properties" dialog.     - Problem opening a picture in an email I have two computers, each using Outlook Express 6 and WindowsXP Home. On each I tried opening a picture embedded in an email by right clicking the picture and selecting Save As. On computer 1, the file opens "Save Picture" and allows a normal save as JPEG. On computer 2, I get an error message. "Can't find the file specified". The help button identifies the missing file as c:\windows\sysyem32\mshtml.hlp I checked both computers' folders and find that each contains two files: mshtml.dll and mshtml.tlb.     - White screen freeze Hi my lap top has devleoped some problem on boot up. It just freezes onto a white screen on boot up before I see any graphics. It looks as though it can access the DVD/CD drive but any attempt to boot up with a recovery disc fails in the same white screen and it freezes. I have tried the manufacturers advice as powering up with the F12 key pressed and another suggestion on the CD to hold the C key down whislt turning on the power brings the same result. Nothing bu the white screen. I have treid F8 to see if I can get into safe mode but it won't move on past the initial clunking of the drives and then silence. I can't think of any way to get this to allow me to move on. I am sure you can though? I would be happy to format and reload but if I can't access the drive then how can I do that?     - Resizing pics to e-mail When right clicking on a .jpg image and selecting "send to e-mail recipient", I used to get a pop-up "Send Pictures Via E-Mail - Windows can resize the pictures you send so they transfer faster, etc. etc." It no longer appears, so I have to edit each image and change the attributes manually after Outlook Express opens with the image attached. After a blue screen of death due to bad data on WindowsXP, I somehow loaded a
second copy of Windows (rather than replacing original) in a small partition.
I keep running out of room due to every thing getting put on the small
partition. What can I do now?

You can copy/ backup data and clean install winxp, you will lose everything,
or you can repair your origonal winxp installation and copy data from this
faulty installation back to your origonal installation
