    - Wireless router questions I have two desktops, currently networked with a wired router and using broadband cable for the internet. I want to put a laptop in an outbuilding about 75 - 100 feet from the primary desktop. I only need internet on it - no networking. A cable of that length is not practical, so I'm assuming I need to switch to a wireless setup. The laptop has USB 1 available and an Ethernet T100 jack.     - Reinstall Spider.exe? Is there a way to extract a fresh copy of Spider.exe from the setup CD without reinstalling all of Windows? I think my copy of Spider has been corrupted. I've uninstalled and reinstalled from Add/Remove, but I don't think it's installing a fresh copy of the .exe. Every few weeks the computer locks up while playing Spider.     - How do I copy a .bkf file if the regular restore utility does not I have several backups on an external hard drive. I am about to reformat my pc and decided to test the backups I did regularly with the windows backup utility. They do not work. I am getting error messages saying file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used. When I click ok at that error, it comes up with a dialog box to check file location. It says the backup file cannot be found or is not the file requested. I saw a few posts that suggesting just copying the entire .bkf file. How does one do that? The only way to see that file is in the backup program. If I right click on the file, it just says catalog or delete catalog. I can see all the files within each backup but I cannot restore them. It's very frustrating as it would seem that windows would have been able to perfect their backup system by now. I have installed carbonite on all my pc's now.     - Can't print wirelessly from laptop. I had this working before but can't get it done this time. HP Deskjet 840Cconnected via single port USB print server to 3Com wireless modem/router. Desktop PC connected via ethernet cable to same, printer works OK from there but not from the laptop, it's not seeing the printer at all. I have installed XP drivers on laptop. Internet and e-mail working OK from laptop. Have enabled file and printer sharing in XP and it's the default printer. Also enabled sharing in printer properties. Can ping the print server successfully but trying to print get "document failed to print" message. Went through the troubleshooter, it didn't help. Have gone through Add Printer Wizard but get stuck on which port it's attached to, it's not attached to a port. Tried all the listed ports anyway! Also checked firewall, using the free version of Comodo. Looked here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/honeycutt_july2.mspx but it didn't help. I don't know why or how it got on this drive. I understand this is to uninstall program updates. I did a search on my C: Drive and found 753 entries but only 1 on my F: Drive.     - FTP Program I am using XP Pro SP2. I have long been successfully using CuteFTP as my FTP program. I installed Filezilla as well, as I wanted to get familiar with it to be able to recommend it to a friend. I cannot get FileZilla to connect to any of my websites. Could the fact that it is co-resident with CuteFTP be the problem? If so, will I be able to use Dreamweaver to update my sites with CuteFTP installed if I ever wsh to?     - Keeping my folder view constant Whenever I set my folder view on List, it will stay there for a while and then (all of a sudden) it will change to Tiles. After I change it to List, I go into Tools, Folder Options, View, and Apply to All Folders. Then I hit OK. It will work for a while and then change back to Tiles. I do not know what I am doing wrong. Every morning I have a routine that I follow, visiting many web pages, checking email, etc. Yesterday after going through this routine, I ran Ad-Aware2007 I found 5 Tracking Cookies as follows: Tracking Cookie index.dat insightexpressai.comIXAIBanners948/ The remaining 4 were the same except for the name following the IXAI. I went to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS and added these five Tracking Cookies asd follows: 127.0.0.1 insightexpressai.comIXAIBanners948/ including the other four. I saved this file and then checked it again to make sure the new entries were there. They were. This morning after going through the same routine, running Ad-Aware2007, there were the same five Tracking Cookies.     - Editing the right click context menu. Hi. I am learning a little about web design. I am hand coding some pages but getting '.html' files to choose between the browser and editor is a pain. I want to right click on a .html file, see 'edit' as an option and it to call NoteTabPro, the editor I am using. I've been in to the folder options, looked at file types, selected 'html' (and 'htm'), and gone into advanced. IN advanced I can see an option for 'edit'. I used browse to point it at the .exe of NoteTabPro... but it still doesn't show when right clicking. Ok, still in advnaced I created a new item, called it "Edit an html file", selected the editor and again, it still doesn't show. OK, whats up? What have I got to do please?     - Serious concern about time changing. Hello- This may seem odd, but here's what's happening. First off, I have a customer who has 7 PC's, at least 3 of them are COMPQ computers, and the others are DELL's and ANTEC computer. Here's what is happening... First off, Windows SBS 2000 is what each of these PC's are attached too, only (1) one of them is newer than the others. (this one is fine) what is happening is that all of the computers loses the TIME! It doesn't matter if it's one hour ahead or past... in fact it's both! They constantly lose the proper time. Can anyone tell me is this an XP issue with Computer & Dell computers? As for the newest one, I built that one for him and it keeps the time without any problems. Can you advise on what might be the (issue) problem? Is this XP in general that is causing the issue? If you are asking me if SP2 is on them, I believe they are... although I can confirm this.     - Changing FOLDER TYPE in WinXP - how? How do I tell WinXP to make a Music Folder into a Normal Folder? In other words, I don't want to see "Music Tasks" in the lefthand column in Explorer... I want to see the normal folder options. There's no way to arrange files by "modified" in the Music folders, which is extremely annoying.     - XP Backup - All Network Devices Grayed Out I have been running XP Backup for several years. It has been backing up My Documents from several XP and Vista boxes on my network. I did a Full backup and then Incremental backups each night. Every few months I redo the Full backup and restart the process. This week I added a new box to the network, went to XP backup to change folders that were being backed up. Well, much to my surprise backup could not longer see any of the devices on the network. All network computers are grayed out and you cannot even open them to see the drives, folders, etc. All of the folders to be backed up are shared and can be seen for the system running backup.     - Windows XP frozen and safe mode freezes also-have unsaved files! H Hello! I have Windows XP 2005 Media version and I use AVG for virus protection. My computer is approx 18 months old and under warranty but I am not getting any help over the phone and that is all they are offering at this point. I have files saved on my computer that I had not backed up and do need to recover if I at all can. I have a flash drive ready to do that! Trust me when I say I have learned my lesson and I don't plan to save anything directly on my computer. I will use CDs and Flash Drives to maintain my files for when I need them. My computer was working fine until approx 1 week ago. When I turned on my computer, it froze (locked) up. I was able at one point during the day to get the computer to let me open up in safe mode. I performed Check Disk and it told me that the volume in C was dirty. It proceeded on to check the rest of the disk. However, when it completes and goes to the log in page and I clik on my icon, the system freezes up. Now I cannot even open up in safe mode as it freezes (locks) up in safe mode as well. Today,I called Dell as my computer is still under warranty, and was told she could help me to do a system retore and I would lose all of my files, etc. She advised that first I contact a local repair person to get them to help me to back up my files and then call her back to complete the system restore. I couln't get any other info or help and ended the phone call more confused and stressed. I have many files that I have not backed up on any other source and I know I should have done so all along. I have been able to do the F12 and all the tests pass. If I do F8 and go to prev safe configuration it will bring up the sign in page, but freezes up when I click on the icon and try to input my password. What is causing this? Is my drive corrupted? How can I fix this without losing all my files? I need my computer desparately and need your help even more. I opened the computer and cleaned it out. It still freezes up. I am at a loss and desperately need help! I am not very computer illiterate when it comes to the this type of technical part of a computer.     - "Search Results" column order won't stick. When I do a search for files, the column order is not as I would like. The column "relevance" is displayed, and the column "date modified" is not displayed. I KNOW how I'm _supposed_ to control this feature - right clicking on the column headers brings up a dialog box allowing me to set which columns are displayed, the width and the order. Like I say, that much works OK. Ans when I change the order it works UNTIL I DO A NEW SEARCH AND THEN IT REVERTS BACK TO THE UNWANTED ORDER. Problem is, the column order won't stick (or keep it's settings) the next time I do a search, the incorrect colums appear. It's as though the settings are not retained between searches. This behavior is not present on my laptop, and I believe it's a problem with a file on my desktop. Does anyone know where XP might store these "search results" column settings from session to session? Is it a registry entry? .INI file? Anyone know how to make these column settings stick?     - Some DVDs no longer play I have 2 DVD drives and both have stopped playing certain DVDs, mainly retail ones but also some DVD games. I have no problem with CDs and most Copied DVDs. I have tried updating the firmware. I have all the codecs I need and i'm using power DVD. I have tried a full system recovery, still no joy and I have not made any changes to the hardware. I used to have no problem using either drive to play DVDs and both have went at the same time so I don't think it's a hardware issue. I have looked everywhere for help and no one has any answers.     - FIXED CORRUPTED RECYCLE BIN My Recycle Bin became corrupted when I deleted NORTON SYSTEMWORKS and ran a REGISTRY CLEANER file from ADOBE regarding FLASH PLAYER, Ihe RB ICON was there but you couldn't OPEN the bin by either right-clicking or double-clicking. The folder had FILES but you could not access them. I could delete files through CC cleaner. NORTON, SONY even this USER BASE seemed to have no answers. Finally, a friend suggested I delete the RECYCLER folder suggesting that XP will create a new one upon reboot. Finally, I found another posting that suggested the same thing. When I tried delete it, I kept getting an access error-disk full error (you've seen it before). A program on my computer entitled UNLOCK finally helped me delete it. I shut the computer off for 30 seconds and started it again to find a new Recycle Bin. I had a "smaller" problem in that when I deleted files, the FULL Bin Icon was not showing. You can correct that by doing the right-click-on-desktop properties and refreshing the ICONS. It's been hell but feels great to have this back. NORM Tag: Hibernate question Tag: 321458

    - Local Drive C: All of a sudden I have a problem in that explorer will not open my LOCAL DRIVE C:. It brings up the block to choose a program assosiated with the request. I do not have the same problem with any other drive like Drive D, CD Rom, DVD or Removable Drive. They all open without a problem. I can choose explorer to open the drive manually by browsing to it, but once I have it selected, I can not set it to open like that every time as the block is grayed out. I have run a number of virus scanners and there is no problem. Somebody suggested that I remove autorun.inf in the root directory, which I did, but it did not change anything. Can anybody help.     - IE Cannot display the Webpage message....... Help!!! I am running Windows XP Professional SP2 with all available updates. I am not able to connect to the web and recieve the message "Internet Explorer Cannot Display the Webpage". I have disabled the Firewall and have disabled the Antivirus Program. I have ran Ad-Aware 2007 and have ran WinsockXPFix, ISPFIX, LSPFix, RegCure and they have corrected found problems with out correcting the connection problem. I can see my Local Network but not the WAN through IE. I have even tried reinstalling IE7 and Windows XP Pro (over itself) and yet I still can not see the web. I have tried removing and recreating the Internet Connection and Networks. I have the problem even if I am connected through Wireless, Wired or Broadband Cellular connections. The only updates that I have not installed is the .NET Framework 2.0 Update and the 3.0 Update. I have searched the forum for assistance and have tried everything that has been suggested in previous forums without success. I am just about ready to REFORMAT and RE-Install the OS to see if that works. I am able to get online with other computers (both Wired and Wireless) over the same network but not on my DELL Inspiron 5100 Laptop that is having the issues.     - Asus A696 USB Driver I just got an A696 but XP will not let me connect to it via USB. In Device Manager it gives me a ? symbol under USB devices.     - No DST change Hi I have Windows XP SP2 and all updates (supposedly) Computer did not update DST this morning. Have been having problems with programs that set time preceding (Mozilla Sunbird) March 9. I tried to download the XP update for DST but got a message that it was already installed or a later version is installed. But it doesn't work. (KB931836) Some background. About 2 months ago I had no sound in my system except for a few items like AIM. I decided to reinstall windows on top of my current copy. I did this so I wouldn't have to reinstall all my applications. Sometime ago I slipstreamed XP with SP2 so they would install at the same time. So I ran that installer. The install went OK, but Windows Update would not update after that. I sought some help from MS, and ran a program that they sent me to clean the registry.Updates now work, but for some reason the DST updater does not work. Any ideas for a solution?     - reading a file updates the modification time I just noticed that reading a file updates the "Date Modified." Even using the TYPE command in a command window updates the Date Modified, even though the TYPE command cannot possibly modify the content of a file. Why is this happening? How can it be fixed? I often really want to know how old the content of a file is, and the only reliable way, looking at the Date Modified, is no longer reliable. Is this the result of some security update?     - New Hard Drive Windows XP Pro, Dell 4100 system, ATA-66 or ATA-100 Ultra DMA hard drive. A recent disk check showed an error in one sector. Elsewhere in this NG, it was recommended that I get a new hard drive ASAP. I have only one now although there are two bays. It is 20 gb.     - How do I get a single column list back? A long time ago I was able to do some sort of tweak so when I had to open a file list it looked exactly like my Windows Explorer and everything was in one long column. Having to do a repair install and numerous updates after that, I no longer have that. Instead I have multiple columns which require a horizontal slider bar...unacceptable.     - MP3 Properties/Summary Problem I have been going through some of my mp3 music files & updating the properties.... Now, nearly all of them have the expected standard Artist, Album Title, Year, Track Number, Genre, Lyrics... etc.... under 'music' in the summary.... but....     - why don't I have Security tab in Windows Explorer? I have a Windows XP Pro SP2 PC that is part of our Domain. When I right click on a folder i.e. "C:\Program Files" and choose properties there is NO Security tab. There's a share tab and a General tab, and that it... I had the PC rejoin the domain. changed mydomain.local, to just mydomain and it went throught the steps, welcomes me to the domain and rebooted. I didn't delete the computer in Active Directories... I found a news group thread that says to go into Windows Explorer and from the menu go to Tools\Folder Options\View and uncheck the option for Simple File Sharing. That didn't give me a Security Tab. I did reboot after I made the change. On my personal PC same setup, the "Simple File Sharing" option is checked, and I do have a security tab.     - Explorer.exe slows/freezes my pc experience! I have Windows XP SP2; 512 MB RAM; 40GB Harddisc space (maximum; about 12 GB left) and 1,0 Ghz CPU. Last month I had discovered that I had about 16 viruses and trojans on my pc when I had them removed with Adaware (The updated Mcafee VirusScan did NOTHING!) and used a "registry cleaner" too. (I made no backup, to save some of my 40GB diskspace) But now sometimes when I reboot, explorer.exe will fail to initiate (with an error message) and when it does, it slows my pc after some minutes. Examples: when I am surfing the net (or moving through my folders and files) a website (or folder or file) will take 1 minute to load or would freeze. But when I use taskmanager to shut down "explorer.exe." the surfing speeds up. And when I restart explorer.exe I can once again move through my folders and files again...but only for about 15-20 minutes. Because it will freeze again! When I look in taskmanger I see that explorer.exe is adding 4 kb of RAM every second, yet the entire windows explorer is frozen. (no way to go to my documents or even activate the "start" button! Unless if I shut down explorer.exe then resatrt it...) Is there a way to fix this...or is my RAM and Processor Power too low for today's standards??? Or has the virus/trojans/malware done something?     - Reinstalling updates I am having to reinstall all my updates. 84 of them. They all download and start to install. All goes well until I get to #75 which is the IE-7 update. It will not install. It starts to update and then continues to run for hours. I have turned off my pop up blocker and my anti-virus but it will not complete the install. This is the third time I've tried it.     - PC won't boot after new motherboard fitted My Medion 8383 wouldn't power up and the local computer shop diagnosed a duff motherboard. I took out my HD and put a blank brand new one in before I took it to the shop. They fitted the new MB and said it was booting fine. I have now connected up the original HD, so just moved the power and data cables over from the new HD to my original. It won't boot up. Try this := Control panel; Users and passwords; Users tab; uncheck "users
must enter
a user name and password to use this computer".

Try this,

Go to Control Panel and double click Power Options.
In Power Options, click on the Advanced tab.
Remove the check mark from the box next to "Prompt for password
when computer resumes from standby".
Click OK.
