    - Windows Explorer hungapp Running windows XP Pro SP2 explorer AppVer 6. Windows Explorer has started hanging when right click on a drive in left pane. Seems to hang whether clicking on c drive or CD or any drive.     - Network Places not working I just set up another computer on my home network and from it I can't see any of my other computers. I am running XP pro on this newly setup computer and am wondering what have I missed. My other computers all are able to see each other but not this one. When I select 'my network places' - I see nothing. And it takes some time before it tells me that maybe I don't have permissions or something like that? And when I select 'View Workgroup Computers' - I also see nothing. I have set up the workgroup the same as my other computers. I just don't know where else to look. Anyone please..     - Folder Rename - two lines I want to be able to have two lines for the name of the folder, but it wont let me. Hitting Enter just ends the renaming.     - Help.How to be Online but off Skype. Hi There Microsoft Basic Member, Just now I have a preoccupation and I hope one of you would be able to help me. I am a member of Skype and can have free video conversations with my friends Online. There are moments in which I know there is no chance of a friend looking for/calling me on Skype. As anywhere else, there are junk interventions, wanting to sell one thing or another. They just butt in (and with NOISE, jingles etc.) while I am reading my E-mail or an article in the Web. Is there a way to be Online and ask Skype not to accept any calls from outside? In summum, how to be Online but off Skype? I am sure one of you knows the answer.     - Webroot's SPYSWEEPER I uninstalled an earlier version of Webroot?s SpySeeper. I then installed the latest version. Immediately after a successful installation I started receiving numerous pop-ups telling me that SpySweeper is blocking my system from contacting various possible spyware sites. About every two minutes it would pop-up with a different site. I then uninstalled the program. Removed all the files relating to SpySweeper from my hard drive. Then I Used JV16 to find any SpySweeper entries in the registry, it found several and I deleted them. However, about 9 remained that I was unable to delete. I then ran REGEDIT and tried to delete them one at a time. This is an example of one of the entries?????. HKLM\system\controlset003\enum\root\legacy_webrootspysweeperservice\0000\ The other 8 are all similar to the above. The error response I get is ?Windows core returned the following error, Access denied or invalid key? Need help in finding a way to delete these 9 registry entries. I?d like to get rid of them before I install the previous version of SpySweeper then I?ll install the latest version over top of the previous version. Any ideas as to why the continuous pop-ups?     - DOS Prompt Disappering When I run a DOS based application, the DOS window appears on my screen then disappears again. It runs on some computers (all XP) but not on others, with the same problem. I have found people trying work around (like adding pause to Batch Files) but as my app run another exe and isn't part of a batch file this is no good. I need a solution. I'm guess it is to do with the environment of windows, a setting somewhere that says whether DOS should automatically close or stay on the screen until manually closed. Anyone got any ideas?     - Slow Running My laptop (a Sony VAIO) is 3 years old but, during the past 2/3 months has become increasingly slow. The boot sequence takes c 5 minutes from switch-on to the time when the egg timer finally disappears and a lot of the programmes seem to have slowed noticeably. I work quite a bit with digital photographs and often have to review maybe 1,000 shots in a folder using the 'slideshow' option, deleting the ones I don't want to keep as I go along. This is particularly ponderous as: - although the window opens OK, it takes ages for all of the thumbnail images to appear - when slideshow is selected it can take several minutes for the first image to appear - when pressing delete, the 'are you sure' dialogue box takes ages to appear and, after pressing yes, the next image can take anything up to 30 seconds to materialise I did try disk clean-up and de-fragmentation. The latter told me that I have just 6% space (c 2Gb) remaining on the C drive so de-frag might not be fully effective. I ran it anyway but it didn't seem to have much effect. Somebody suggested that the registry might need tidying up and recommended RegCure. I downloaded this and it found over 1,000 'errors' which have now been put right. This seems to have improved things a little, but not dramatically. Could the problem be related to the lack of space left on the C drive? Any guidance will be appreciated! Thanks.     - Xp log-on then log-off I have a toshiba laptop that was infected with some downloader trojan. Norton Internet Security caught and resolved the file. After reboot, when typing in the password the desktop background picture comes up, I get a "Loading your Settings" for about 5 seconds, then the screen flashes really fast, then I get a "Logging off" and it takes me back to the log-in screen.... This happens under local Administrator account and in All Safe modes,,,,, to include safe mode with command prompt.... On Google search it pulled up a similar issue and suggested that it was a missing file called userinit.exe or a wuaupdater.exe file that was missing.... I slaved in the drive to my PC using a HD to USB adapter and was able to access the whole drive. I replaced those files with known good ones (they were both missing on the laptop HD) but the problem still exist. I also took the c:\windows\system32\config files (registry files) and renamed them, then took the repair files from c:\windows\repair and copied them into the c:\windows\system32\config folder and was able to log into the laptop then however all the applications were not functioning properly and would have to be reinstalled. I know the problem must exist in those registry files somewhere... but how to fix it is at a loss... I tried running Commander from CD but it won't run on that laptop... says something like pci.sys fail with a blue screen.... but this is a seperate problem than the one I post here....     - zip and exe programs Hi-I downloaded and email checker type program today and I really like it. Problem is that when I turn off the pc and restart it, I have to manually put my email addresses in this program again. This is such a simple program and does not even have a help file. My question is this: How can I make this program be a permanent part of all my other programs. If i can do that, maybe the addresses will remain and not erase. If after doing this, they still 'erase' then I will search for another program that saves my settings and addresses.     - XP Display Issue With Access 2K I am running Access 2K on an XP Pro machine. The background color for the switchboard startup screen and all forms/screens are white, not their regular colors. There are many versions of this applications running on at least 50 machines and we have never seen this problem. Further, all reports that display to the screen have a gray background -- not white. When printed to a printer they are okay. I checked the desktop property settings for Windows and they all seem normal. And, this computer is not having problems with any other programs. I converted each file (around 110mb each) to mp3. Now, I have a four, large mp3 files. How can I extract the individual cuts from the single mp3 file ??     - Is It Still Possible To Buy Full Retail Verdions of Xp In the UK Its late in the day, I know, but I have at last, accepted, that until I can get to grips with altewrnative os's I must upgrade to at least XP. I have used win 98Se for many years, and it still does most of what I want it to do. I have never had a brand new computer, simply because I can't afford one. I have always used a stand -alone mc. I have purchased a full retail upgrade of XP Home Sp2 several years ago. with a view to upgrading the best of 3 self -build pcs that i never got round to fully completing! I've made my mind up, as to which pc to do a clean install of. I now have 2pc's which I would like to install XP on. I have afull licence for win 98 for one of them, so I am looking for a retail upgrade and a full retail version. I have been unable to find any stores that still sell retail versions, and most on-line sources which claim to be selling full versions, seem to be selling oem versions. I would be happy to get an oem generic version at a computer fair, that came with some bit of kit, if necessary, but I want to be sure I don't run into difficulties activating and getting upgrades. I am not used to all this activating stuff All my pc's are elderly in computing terms, but I have checked that they are all capable of running XP. Thanks for any pointers.     - Printing a.gif from a Batch File I have a .gif file which, when "dragged", to a printer prints correctly as an image. When I attempt to get the same result from a batch file using: "print /d:printername file." I get garbage output. When I omit the printer name argument I get a dialog asking several irrelevant things.     - why will my LG DVD writer not read or write? I run XP Pro SP3 and have a SATA LG DVD writer which although recognised in device manager will not read or write anything. Model is HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H62N It was working fine before I changed my motherboard. I have reinstalled adaptec ASPI. When I run Nero Infotool 5 it reports that all is well with the drive.     - Help With Freeing Up Space On HD I have a newly widowed friend who lives half-way across the USA. She is trying to free up space on what she claims is a 12 GB HD that has 11.9 GB files on it. I know & can guide her with the usual clean-up/un-install routines. However, she has indicated that some of his old files are password protected......assuming mail, etc. Would deleting his identity on the computer get rid of those password protected files or just put them further out of reach?     - Admin and password dialog box I have installed an application (Zen Cart) on my system within a XAMPP environment. When I go to the admin area of Zen Cart in Internet Explorer I am asked for a login and password. However the dialog box has no memory of me having previously logged in and I have to enter both every time. Whereas on another XP computer it remembers my previous entry and supplies the username as soon as I type the first character. How can I reset this memory facility on the first PC?     - Still Cannot Re-size pages--Please help When I open Word, the documents take up the entire screen. Cannot bring them down to scale, despite restoring the computer to an earlier date, increasing the resulotuion (which just gave me tinier letters, but did not reduce the page), using zoom (same thing, tinier lettters).     - Computer locked after changing sign-on password I have an ACER laptop. I used Control userpasswords2 to eliminate the sign-on password window. After I did that I can no longer get onto windows. It still comes up with that screen with Administrator as the use name and wants a password. I have tried every password that I have ever used, changed the user name to my name both with no effect. I tried booting from the original WinXP disk and it still wants a password to load the install program.     - Wireless ad hoc (point to point, no router) using IE7 I am connecting a laptop computer running XPSP2 to an HP printer (C4385) on via wireless ad hoc connection. When I put the C4385 IP address in the address line of IE7 it times out. When I ask it to trouble shoot the connection it can not find the wireless printer even though the computer is connected to it. It does find other wireless routers but not the printer. If I connect wirelessly to a router everything works fine. If I connect a Vista laptop to the printer in ad hoc mode it connects and brings up the printer information so I'm sure the printer is working.     - Are there ways to make a folder open as it was last closed? I want every folder I open in my XP computer to open just as it was last closed; same view, same size, same postion, same everything. Most of my folders do this correctly; others do not, and there seem to be no differences between those that do and those that don't. The options panels are identical. What causes this, and what can I do about it. e.g. When I choose the Detail view, and a set of details that I want to display, then the next time I open that folder, I expect the Detail view and the same set of details. Sometimes I do; most of the time I don't. If I change the view to Thumbnails and full screen, that's what I should get the next time I open the folder.     - How can I resize the page? My son used my computer while I was away. Now, every page I open (Internet, Word, Outlook Express) takes up the entire screen, so I cannot see the bottom of the page. I have tried restoring the system to an earlier date, and using Zoom (works for Word but there is no default so I have to do it every time). I get this well known operating system message Memory could not be written error It is caused by my own application (VisualBasic 6.0 with a call to a C++-DLL) The background: My application runs on hundrets of PCs all over the world without those problems but one customer has this anoying error message. It happens exactly when he runs another application in parallel. But this other application itself also has no problems if he runs it stand-alone. So there seems to be any runtime cross interference between both applications. My first thought was a problem with memory management. If both applications are running at the same time there is a lot of memory usage. This causes swapping and high activity on moving memory between physical RAM and hard disk. And sometimes this causes invalid pointers concerning the memory of my application at the interface between VB6.0 and the C++-DLL. My questions: - Is my first thought comprehencible? - What other explanations are there? - What can I do to analyse the problem?     - Can't get past login page - virus? Hi, I opened a couple of those fake CNN emails and thought they were comedy spoofs, which in a way I suppose they were. Anyhoo, I had trojan problems but fixed them. Several days later, after turning machine on and off a few times, it crashed a little too often for my liking and I thought this might be because it was due for some tuning so I ran Registry Healer. Then I optimised the registry using NTregopt. Then I rebooted. Now I can't get past the login screen. There's no password set by myself, I should point out.     - OT. Internet ordering. I had problems when placing an order for some flowers on the internet. Three attempts failed (a blank page appeared each time I submitted the order) but my credit card was debited three times and no flowers were received. I was informed that I had probably 'double clicked' on the submit button (I hadn't) and this causes a problem "that cannot be rectified as this is the way the internet is, ie when you double click, it doesn't give time for the system to process the order or send a confirmation but for some reason, which I am unsure of, it takes payment from you".
