I want to be able to have two lines
for the name of the folder, but it
wont let me. Hitting Enter just ends
the renaming. I tried a few key
combinations, but nothing worked.

I think I did this years ago, but I
have forgotten how to do it, or I have
a false memory.

I believe the only place you can make a two line folder name is when it is
associated with an icon.

To do this, just lengthen the name with spaces i.e.,

cars folder becomes

cars
folder

if you add spaces between cars and folder.

In explorer; or on the desktop for icons?

I used to do that in Office! But I've forgotten the Keys too!
CTRL and Enter, or Alt and Enter; just a guess!

I tried those. I'm pretty sure I did it
years ago, but I forget how now. It's
one of those things that if you don't do
regularly you forget.

Just right-click, RENAME the icons keeping a couple things in mind.
Everybody's system may be a little different, but in general the first
line of the name holds about 6 characters in my case. So anything
greater than 6 characters is going to be two lines of text. Ymmv;
remember, this is MY system.
So let's say I want ShutDown to take two lines:
I'll type for the name "Shut", then a space, then "Down", and hit
return. That will result in the icon name looking like:

Shut
Down

If a word is too short, you can pad it out with spaces enough to fill a
line, and make the second word spill onto the next line.
That's a handy way to make hyphenated words break in the right places
so they display as two words, split in the right place. Just add a
space.
AFAIK, ctrl-enter, alt-enter, etc., will NOT break a line for you in
the icon's title bar.

I know there is a way to cause the line
to split the line
without padding. I suspect it is
something contained
in quotes.

Thanks for responding.

Well, I'm going to go out on a limb here, and bet you a free cup of
coffee that there is no native way of doing so in XP. Perhaps some 3rd
party app might, but XP can't, I'm pretty sure.
I wouldn't mind being wrong in this case, but ... I don't think I am.

Cheers,

Twayne

You are probably right. I know I did it
in 98SE,
but there seems know way I know to do it.
