E-mail attachments won't download

When I click on an e-mail attachment, the file download box appears and then
hangs. There is no estimated time, location where file will be saved to,
etc. The file never downloads. These files are basic word and exel. I've
tried disarming mcafee and checked with Yahoo Mail, and the problem doesn't
appear to be there. I've also cleaned up files. Help would be appreciated.

Oh, we're supposed to know how you access your e-mails? In a local
e-mail client, there is no such thing as the attachment being separate
of the e-mail. The attachment is *in* the e-mail, so if you got the
e-mail then you already have the attachment.

Oh, sorry, I use ATT Yahoo Mail accessed through IE7 and I'm running Windows
XP Media Edition 2004. I receive an e-mail with an attachment, and can open
the e-mail but cannot open or save the attachment. The process hangs after
the Yahoo virus scan, during the file download. The file never downloads.
I've never had this problem before, it started happening in the past month or
so. Please let me know if more info is needed.

It is not needed since you should contact ATT Yahoo! support:
http://helpme.att.net/emailus.php . If they cannot help you via email you
will be directed to voice support with a technician.

Sounds like a screwed up config at Yahoo. The attachment should have
already been scanned BEFORE the e-mail was deposited into your mailbox
on the server. It shouldn't have to be scanned again when you request
to download it. That is, the e-mail should've already been scanned by
the time you ever see the new e-mail show up, so it doesn't need to be
scanned when you try to download it. I just did a test by sending an
e-mail to my Yahoo Mail account that had a 1MB attachment. When I
logged onto my Yahoo Mail account using a web browser, there was the
test e-mail. I clicked on the link and a dialog opened to start the
download. There was NO additional scanning operation on the server.
That had already been done before it arrived in my mailbox. In the
download dialog, I specify where to save the downloaded file. I am
using the classic webmail interface because the full interface is just
too damn slow. So switch to the classic interface to see if the
download works okay that way.

As another test, I switched to the Ajax (full) interface which is far
slower. Geez, you even have to wait for it to paint the menus when they
drop. When I clicked on the attachment, yep, then I saw the scanning by
Norton dialog. That's stupid because it is bogus. The attachment has
already been scanned when it arrived so they're just shoving that bogus
dialog in your face to give users a warm and fuzzy feeling. It's just
stupid since it doesn't do anything. The download, once started (using
the web browser's dialogs so YOU specify where to save the downloaded
file), completed okay. I immediately went back to the Classic interface
to regain speed in using that webmail interface.

You sure it isn't some anti-virus, anti-malware, or other security or
protection software on your host that is interferring with the download?
What happens when you temporarily disable the antivirus program running
on YOUR host?

Yes, I've disabled McAfee and am using the classic Yahoo mail. I understand
that the file was virus scanned before dropping in my inbox. It just hangs
in file download mode with no path, no estimated time, etc. I'll try Allan's
suggestion of contacting att support. Thank you for your support.

Since you mentioned the "scanning" dialog at Yahoo Mail, it didn't seem
like you were using the Classic UI. That shows up when using the full
(Ajax) UI at Yahoo Mail.

Looks like the web browser isn't getting notified of where to grab the
file. That is, the server is trying to find the file to proffer to
your client. Make sure you have flushed all the browser's temp file
cache and purged all its cookies.

Rather than just disable McAfee, have you tried uninstalling it (and
then also using their cleanup utility to make sure most of it is gone)?
