    - Sound I install the sound drivers ok and the 'logoff' sound, sounds, but then after a reboot the sound has gone again. It is via 823x . The sound under Device manager are all installed ok and under 'sounds' in control panel, the small test icon displays and works with each of the windows sounds but nothing is heard. I have removed the file from the M/Bd Cd for that chipset and ut it on the H/D and if I reinstall fro there (no reboot required) it works fine.     - Adding a second hard drive I've almost filled up my computer's built-in hard drive. I'd like to add a second one to store my music and movies, but I want to power up this second hard drive only when I want to watch a movie.     - Frequent copying of large number of folders & files I asked this over in the xpmusic group also but thought I might improve my chances by putting it here as well. I regularly copy my music files to a second internal hard drive and also to a removable Lacie. The exercise consists of a folder with a hundred or so sub folders containing 9,000+mp3 files. Is there any way to copy only those files which aren't already on the two backup drives?     - Hard Drive Filling Up Too Quickly I am running Windows XP on an old computer with a 10 GB HD. I know, it's really small but it has been working. I do have an 80 GB hard drive that I have moved most things over to. Every once in a while I have to get rid of some files because I get a low disk message.     - "Incorrect Function" for CD burning O/S Windows XP Home Edition I am having a problem with my CD drive that looks like a software issue. The basic background is that I can use the "D" drive to play music CD's but am unable to write text to the CD and when I try to "save as" from Word, I get the following error message "Incorrect Function You do not have access to the folder 'D:\'. See your administrator for access to this folder" The CD which was working six months ago is a Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-308B DVD/CD-ROM drive that is OEM with the IBM unit. Since I generally save day-to-day files to a floppy, I seldom use the CD for storage but am in need of it now for some large file creations. I have run a "Troubleshoot" on the hardware and it comes back as working without problems. I have also checked for software updates but the driver is current. I have searched the Microsoft Knowledge base to find a relative solution but the problems do not appear to resemble mine. I have no idea where to look for an answer and most importantly a "fix" so if there is someone in here who can guide me it would be appreciated. It is possible that it is an easy fix but I am not the brightest penny when it comes to registries and buried files so if you have a solution, perhaps I could ask you to be specific in your guidance.     - How do I get rid of a partially installed 2nd operating system? My 2 year old computer needed to have the system mirror reinstalled. In addition to the system mirror there was a copy of SP2, but before I could install that it automatically downloaded and installed 67 updates to XP. I asked here if I should also install the SP2 disk and the early advice was that I should. So I did. Since the updates already did what was necessary, the computer started to install a 2nd XP operating system. (maybe I did something else wrong, but I don't know what.) When I realized what was happening I aborted the second install, but it is now hanging there. When I boot it asks if I want to use the first operating system or the one that is partially installed. I tell it to use the first and all is well. But I would like to get rid of the partial install so I don't have to answer the question every time. How can I do that?     - XCOPY's capabilities Many moons ago, before settling on Drive Image and GHOST to make complete backup clones of my Master Operating System, I tried XCOPY and couldn't successfully produce a bootable cloned system on a Slave hard drive. I got good advice here. (Thank you, Richard). I don't want to start that research over again to answer one of my colleagues who has asked me why I don't just use XCOPY, with its many switches.     - No sound from Speaker I have just reformatted the hard drive and placed windows xp home edition back on. I am getting no sound from speakers. I went into device manager and under audio device on high definition audio bus there is a yellow question mark. I clicked it and it says drivers are not installed. So i pressed reinstall drivers and it came up with a hardware install wizard asking me to insert the recovery disc cd. I did this and it says it could not find the software to load the driver.     - Windows XP performance issue I have a Dell 5150 box that used to have Windows 2000 on it. I recently upgraded to Windows XP and noticed that downloading files from our server is extremly slow. a 2MB file takes about 5 minutes to download to the computer. However, if we upload the 2MB file to the server, it works great. What could be going wrong. When the computer was Windows 2000 we had no speed problems. As soon as we switched the OS, it's very slow. I tried changing the speed and duplex settings on the computer and switch but no combination worked. I even replace the network card and nothing.     - Do I have to use a SP2 disk? I have a 2 year old Dell laptop. It was getting increasingly flaky and nothing seemed to fix it, so I reloaded the original disk mirror. That seemed to fix it, but it immediately started downloading a Windows update as soon as I established an internet connection (which was one of the things that didn't work before). The computer came with a system mirror disk and a SP2 disk. I am assuming I don't have to use the SP2 disk, as the update will take care of that. Is that correct?     - Error in Bios Some hardware is causing errors!! I believe the hardware is my D drive, since the very first error listed storage at the top of the error and then later my D drive went missing! Ran error checking and it came back.. so I'm pretty sure it is my D Drive but to be 100% sure I will need to find the error in Bios..     - OPEN ANY EXECUTABLE - SAME PROGRAM OPENS I have a small open source query editor I downloaded to my desktop and have been using for over a year. I got tired of having to clear my desktop to access the icon to open this program. So, I drag and drop the desktop Icon to the Start icon on the task bar and dropped it in the menu like I have many times with other programs. Now no matter what executable ( exe, bat, com, etc ) I attempt to run either from Programs or Windows Explorer, the query editor opens. I removed the icon from the Start menu but didn't change anything.     - The sequence of things.... When I boot up (XP Pro with all updates) I have a annoying problem. Norton AV is loaded after my network connection, Zone Alarm and other services. Consequently I get a balloon message saying that my system is at risk because the firewall is not active. Once Norton is loaded the message goes away.. This started happening recently but I can't tell what changed. I've looked in the files shown in msconfig to see if I can change the sequence of loading. I don't see (or can't interpret)what's going on. Can someone tell me how the system determines the loading sequence and if I'd have problems if I changed it.     - Backup Program I successfully installed the backup program by double-clicking on NTBACKUP.MSI and was able to back up my data, but on pg. 925 of Robert Cowat's book on Windows XP Home Edition there is a statement : "And don't forget to mark the System State check box to protect your Registry and system configuration".     - My IBM R50P laptop powers off with no warning, no consistency. My IBM R50P has started to "power off" when I am using it and also when not in use. The only constant I can pin point is that it happens within 30 minutes from bootup. It is not linked to specific programs unless there is something happening in the background. I have tried to use system restore thinking an program update may have caused this, but after the boot from system restore, I get an "Incomplete" error due to no changes were made? This does not make sense because I go to points in time when Windows update was installed or a program was installed or removed. Any suggestions? I really don't want to start from scratch.     - "Add A Printer" Wizard Cannot Locate Network Printers Yes, the firewalls have been enabled properly, and Yes, the network printer on the other computer is set for sharing. The Add A Printer wizard just hangs displaying that there aren't any printers to display and a status message that "Documents Waiting". It will stay in that state permanently.     - New SATA hard drive BSoD error I have been working on this off and on for the last three days and it is driving me crazy! Almost immediately hundreds of users registered complaints ranging from complete crashes to looping reboots.     - Unable to Enable Automated Updates in Services After updaing my PC's with the SP3 I am consistently getting the red shield telling me to turn on my automated updates. This is true as well with Onecare making the same statement. The SP3 also has deleted my restore history making it now impossible to restore to a certain point any longer. I now have to setup a new restore point which really pisses me off. Even after the many and frustrating attempts to follow Microsoft Self-Help Options and Solutions I find that there is nothing short o a fix apparently. I have gone into the SERVICES and manually made the selections accordingly and all I get is: (1058 Automated Update Disabled and/or has no enabled devices) or (url://c:\windows\system32\mmcndmgr.dll/views.htm). Regards to the first: No duh, you cannot enable it, How much more redundant can MS get? Regards to the second: Well, so redundant that they can't even allow a simplified means to correct something they allowed their programmers to totally screw up. Has anyone had this problem and if so, have you been forunate enough to gain access to a fix? This issue has occured on both of my WINDOWS XP PC's and my one and only VISTA Professional PC.     - Postscript Fonts -- VERY DESPERATE! Finalized a catalog at home in CT -- client has urgent beyond-final-minute changes and I'm in FL so I asked my son to FedEx down a disk that has everything on it, including fonts. TrueType fonts are no problem. But trying to install PostScript fonts I'm getting one of two error messages: 1. "Unable to install the font. File <FONT> is either invalid or damaged." OR 2. "The copyright holder of <FONT> will not allow their font to be converted to TrueType. Please contact the font vendor for more information." I've never had this happen doing this catalog before and share the fonts with the printer all the time to mass print. If I can't figure out what the problem is in the next hour or two I have to fly home tomorrow from this beautiful Sarasota to the Northeast and I'm begging for help!!!     - No desktop at boot Running windows xp home with sp2. When I boot the machine it comes to the desktop but no icons are present. The same thing happens if I boot to safe mode. I can do ctrl-alt-del and get the task manager. from there I can pretty much run anything I want. When I look under the processes tab explorer.exe is not present. If I enter the command to run it, I can see the desktop bottom tollbar flash for a secone and then go away. It is as thought explorer.exe turns off as soon as it turns on. Will re-install windows if need be, but really don't want to go through the process if not necessary. Are there any other solutions out there?     - Found new hardware keeps popping up! Hi, after I turn on my windows xp home pc, and it starts to load up, that "Found New Hardware MTP device" box keeps popping up on the lower right notification area in the task bar. I "x" it out and it comes back right away. Its on top of ALL windows so its always showing. I rigth click and it pops up. I left click and it pops up. I recently plugged in an mp3 player which would explain why this specific pop box. but I have nothing plugged into my USB now. To anyone interested, Before you do a SP3 upgrade, I can't stress enough, that you should purchase a backup or imaging program like Acronis TrueImage, (version 10 or higher should be your choice.) Make a backup/image of your current OS, so if you have problems, you can easily return to a working copy of your OS. Saves allot of grey hair, and headaches. If you have the following Dell PC (or other similar models) with an AMD Processor, and using the image that was installed by the factory, you may have run into the reboot problem that occurred after installing XP SP3 update: (My Configuration) Dell Dimension E521 AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 Ghz 3 GB of RAM 80 GB Primary HDD 500 GB Secondary HDD Windows XP MCE 2005 Using the restore image from the factory/hidden partition. MS LifeCam VX-6000 Windows Live Messenger (current version) There is a fixed mentioned on the net to change a registry setting in XP, before trying to install XP SP3. This did not work for me. After making a backup of the keys listed below, I deleted/removed the following registry Keys: 1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\intelppm 2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\intelppm Or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00X\Services\intelppm (Random ControlSet #) These keys will have a reference of: "DisplayName: Intel Processor driver" Dword: Start Value: 4 (Hex) (This value did not work for me.) I did not have to remove the following keys, because it referred to an event log. The upgrade worked, and I left the keys there in the registry. 3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\System\intelppm 4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\Eventlog\System\intelppm After the upgrade, things may still be a little sluggish still, I found that I had to remove, then reinstall, or upgrade several IM programs, digital/web cameras and their drivers/programs, some Dell Hardware drivers, etc... This information is added to the overall list of information that is kept in the Media Library. So, how would I get the information on to WindowsMedia.com in order for Windows Media Player to download it? I hear that there may be a way to physically mail a copy of the DVD along with the information that I need in Windows Media Player but I do not know where to send it.     - Failure to Hibernate after XP3 install This is a repeat of a query posted under a different title. Maybe here it will get more attention. And yes, I posted it in Tech Net. I downloaded and installed SP3 about a week ago, and have noticed only one peculiarity so far. My screen saver times in and functions, but even with nothing of mine that I know of running, I see no disk shutoff, no Standby, No Hibernate.
