    - Battery failure Would your computer stop working all of a sudden one day if the motherboard battery, the 2032 organize battery I think, stops working? The computer worked when I changed the monitor but then it stopped working shortly after that. Then it didn't matter what monitor I tried, it just wouldn't fire up. I checked everything almost, reseated the RAM, checked the power supply, tried another video card, checked the hard drive, used different parallel straps. I mean I went through all I could think of, except the motherboard battery. By accident I discovered that it wasn't working. Do you think that could be the problem? Is that a common problem of a PC going on the blink? Would it start up after a rest and then finally shut down? It seems like the battery on my flashlights get better once they aren't on, but once you turn the flashlight back on, the flashlight dims out. I'm thinking about putting the whole PC back together now and trying out a battery that I know works. Ok, this is the truth. I took out the battery and changed it with another one and I think the one I changed it with was bad. I'm not sure, but I know I did change the battery. I was trying out my battery tester and found out the right option on the tester to test 3 and 1 1/2 volt batteries. So, I'm not sure if the original battery I took out was good or bad.     - Permissions and file access I am using XP Pro. I recently had to reformat my hard drive. In preparation I did a backup of selected files and folders using Nero 8. After reinstalling Xp, I did a restore with Nero. I noticed during the process, a number of files received the following: System error 1307: This security ID may not be assigned as the owner After the restore, I click on some of the folders and I get an "Access Denied" error. Ihad the same results using XP backup and restore utility. I am the only user with administrator privileges. I use two computers in a home wireless network with file sharing.     - Chinese version software install - wrong display One of my pc's runs Windows xp English version (SP3). The pc has beeen setup with chinese fonts and the regional setting is Chinese (Taiwan). I can enter Chinese texts and display them in say, Microsoft Word without any problems. Now I want to install Corel Draw (it was sold to my son as education version), Chinese version onto the pc. When the installation CD is inserted into the Drive, it starts the autorun and brings up the installation screen.     - Mouse problem I have been searching for a couple of days but am so unsure if I am doing the right thing, I am posting here. I am trying to play "80 days around the world" and when I do, my cursor shakes, I have reinstalled both the nvidia graphics and the video drivers, uninstalled the game, and manually removing the game folder and also software entries in both hkey machine and hkey user. I also did a search for the game on my computer and deleted everything that came up by that name. Then reinstalled the game, but still my cursor is shaking. I thought it could be my driver for my mouse but the mouse seems to be working ok otherwise . I went to device manager and found that it is listed as a Microsoft ps/2 mouse, ? but know it is a microsoft optical! , $14 at OFFICE max..:) I cannot find my mouse drive, the one that came with the mouse. Windows XP SP3 I think the game started to act up after I installed SP3.. I didn't have a good install, tried to use system restore to remove and start over, but it would not work for me.     - WhereIs Desktop Search News Group How come the Francosphere has such a thing but Anglosphere doesn't - is this some form of discrimination, I can flame WDS just as good as any Francophone. I could stuff my WDS issues into Gargoyle's translation service and then stuff its output into the Francosphere WDS newsgroup and do the reverse with any replies. BTW - WDS4 install just trashed my index of approximately 300.000 documents, without so much as a by your leave sir. That was my data that just got shredded - I call that electronic vandalism.     - Windows will not boot This started with no warning ... running windows xp home and when I try to start whether it is in regular mode or safe mode, I get the following message: windows cannot start because the following file is either missing or corrupt. Try booting to your windows cd a choose r for repair at the first screen. Have run chkdsk /r in this function and it says it has found and repaired errors, but I continie to have the same problem.     - Beed Help - Folder Permissions I am using the so-called Solutions Center for the HP 7200 series AIO, and cannot get the scan function to save what I scan. It shows an error message saying that it cannot do the save. I am using XP PRO SP2. I had created a new folder called c:\My Scans, but I notice the properties say read only. Naturally, I suspect this is my problem, but when I remove the check on read only, it comes right back again. That is, it won't let me remove the check. The XP Helps show that I should be able to change permissions, but it shows doing it via a security tab under the folder's properties. I see no such tab. What am I missing? Am I in the right place to do what I want to do? Do you think this is why I cannot save what I scan? I am the only user of this system with Administrator privileges, I think.     - Windows Color only displaying in lowest... Windows color is only displaying in lowest 2 bit colors. This only happened after I reinstalled Windows xp pro b/c I had to reset the administrator password that was changed. Once I finished loading and installing XP pro the colors were that of a watermark picture and not in its normal 16 bit color format. I don't know how to get it to change to 16 bit color from 2 bit.     - Sliding systray - possible to get static, stable systray back? I don't know what I did. I rarely have that kind of thing happen anymore, but there you go. My systray is no longer visible at all. I have to hover the mouse pointer over the area for it to slide into view. But the minute mouse pointer moves out of general area, it slides closed again.     - Auto assign drive letters I have had this issue with several Windows XP workstations. Whenever I plug in a external storage device like a thumb drive, it assigns a drive letter that is already in use by a mapped drive.     - Question about Backup Program I successfully installed the backup program by double-clicking on NTBACKUP.MSI and was able to back up my data, but on pg. 925 of Robert Cowat's book on Windows XP Home Edition there is a statement : "And don't forget to mark the System State check box to protect your Registry and system configuration".     - Autoplay Feature has Stopped Working The autoplay feature seems to have stopped working on a computer. Autoplay is enabled for all drives including the fixed drives (according to Tweak UI). No matter how I confugure Properties->Autoplay nothing happens when the drive is "activated" - i.e. a DVD is inserted or a camera's plugged in, or a removale disk is attached. If I configure the optical drive to start WMP when a DVD is inserted nothing happens, if I configure it to offer a range of options nothing happens. This used to work I'd insert a DVD and WMP would play it. Same thing with my camera, it used to bring up the camera and scanner wizard - this does not happen any more, nor do I get a range of options. In other words the whole Autoplay feature seems to have stopped working. The OS/Version is XP-Home SP2 - according to Windows Update the only missing updates are SP3 and Silverlight, it's hard to believe that either of those would fix the problem.     - Making an XP reinstallation disc It used to be that manufacturers supplied a copy of Windows that you could use to reinstall the OS in case it got messed up. That seems to have gone out of style. My IBM ThinkCentre desktop has a hidden hard-drive partition with the files needed to reinstall XP. But what if the hard-drive goes bad after the warranty is expired? It looks like I lose the XP license. It seems unreasonable. So I want to make a CD or DVD that would reinstall XP---not backup all my documents---I would make a separate backup of my own data.
