XP Pro Compression

I have many CDs/Albums on an external hard drive.
Would I be taking a big risk by commpressing the drive using the XP Pro
compression ?? TIA

I think drive compression is a foolhardy thing to use. Without drive
compression, if you have a problem on a single spot on the drive, you will
probably lose a single file. With drive compression, essentially everything
is in a single file, so even a small problem means the loss of everything.

Also note that if these files are important to you, and you don't have a
backup of them, you are playing with fire.

A much better option would be a larger or second external drive.

Are the albums stored as full size wave files or MP3 files?

Since any MP3 files are already compressed, any resulting compressed
folders or folder system would probably not be much smaller and might
even be a bit larger.

Well, assuming one has a backup schedule they adhere to and it's
maintained on a non-internal drive, I'd say it's a perfectly fine thing
to do. Personally I haven't yet come across a problem attiributed to
xp'S compression. In fact, I've never heard of anyone having any
problems with XP's compression and that includes one or two that
compressed their boot drives, or tried to.
But anyway you look at it, I can't see it as ever being a "big risk".
XP uses the simpler algorithms and compresses well on the fly with
seldom noticeable impact. I'll have to look back for Ken's post; I'm
curious what his reasons are.
