    - changing file system Hi, I've re-installed Windows XP on my laptop with four drives. Earlier, the file system is FAT32. During re-install, I've formatted the system drive (C:) to NTFS. All other drives are still FAT32. How can I change the rest of the drives to NTFS without losing my files/data on those drives.     - Mouse problem I have been searching for a couple of days but am so unsure if I am doing the right thing, I am posting here. I am trying to play "80 days around the world" and when I do, my cursor shakes, I have reinstalled both the nvidia graphics and the video drivers, uninstalled the game, and manually removing the game folder and also software entries in both hkey machine and hkey user. I also did a search for the game on my computer and deleted everything that came up by that name. Then reinstalled the game, but still my cursor is shaking. I thought it could be my driver for my mouse but the mouse seems to be working ok otherwise . I went to device manager and found that it is listed as a Microsoft ps/2 mouse, ? but know it is a microsoft optical! , $14 at OFFICE max..:) I cannot find my mouse drive, the one that came with the mouse. Windows XP SP3 I think the game started to act up after I installed SP3.. I didn't have a good install, tried to use system restore to remove and start over, but it would not work for me.     - WhereIs Desktop Search News Group How come the Francosphere has such a thing but Anglosphere doesn't - is this some form of discrimination, I can flame WDS just as good as any Francophone. I could stuff my WDS issues into Gargoyle's translation service and then stuff its output into the Francosphere WDS newsgroup and do the reverse with any replies. BTW - WDS4 install just trashed my index of approximately 300.000 documents, without so much as a by your leave sir. That was my data that just got shredded - I call that electronic vandalism. If I trashed Bill and Linda's house or poured concrete into the interior of Ballmer's car I'd get 6 months or more in the pokey, but they can trash my database without any fear of retribution.     - Windows will not boot This started with no warning ... running windows xp home and when I try to start whether it is in regular mode or safe mode, I get the following message: windows cannot start because the following file is either missing or corrupt. Try booting to your windows cd a choose r for repair at the first screen. Have run chkdsk /r in this function and it says it has found and repaired errors, but I continie to have the same problem.     - Beed Help - Folder Permissions I am using the so-called Solutions Center for the HP 7200 series AIO, and cannot get the scan function to save what I scan. It shows an error message saying that it cannot do the save. I am using XP PRO SP2. I had created a new folder called c:\My Scans, but I notice the properties say read only. Naturally, I suspect this is my problem, but when I remove the check on read only, it comes right back again. That is, it won't let me remove the check. The XP Helps show that I should be able to change permissions, but it shows doing it via a security tab under the folder's properties. I see no such tab. What am I missing? Am I in the right place to do what I want to do? Do you think this is why I cannot save what I scan? I am the only user of this system with Administrator privileges, I think.     - ? regarding device manager I have a motherboard (ASUS IPIBL-LA) on an HP computer (M9040N) that was intended for vista. I don't like vista so I wiped it clean and installed xp home. With the help of forums I found drivers for everything so my device manager is clean. My original intent for this computer was something fast for HD video editing.     - Windows Color only displaying in lowest... Windows color is only displaying in lowest 2 bit colors. This only happened after I reinstalled Windows xp pro b/c I had to reset the administrator password that was changed. Once I finished loading and installing XP pro the colors were that of a watermark picture and not in its normal 16 bit color format. I don't know how to get it to change to 16 bit color from 2 bit.     - Sliding systray - possible to get static, stable systray back? I don't know what I did. I rarely have that kind of thing happen anymore, but there you go. My systray is no longer visible at all. I have to hover the mouse pointer over the area for it to slide into view. But the minute mouse pointer moves out of general area, it slides closed again. Very annoying. I've googled, but absolutely nothing has come up so far on how to fix. I've rebooted and problem persists so it seems a setting may be been toggled somehow (hoping that's all it is, anyhow). How can I fix this, please?     - Auto assign drive letters I have had this issue with several Windows XP workstations. Whenever I plug in a external storage device like a thumb drive, it assigns a drive letter that is already in use by a mapped drive. I can go in and manual change it but the next time I plug it in, it does it again. Any ideas why this happens? How can I fix this?     - Question about Backup Program I successfully installed the backup program by double-clicking on NTBACKUP.MSI and was able to back up my data, but on pg. 925 of Robert Cowat's book on Windows XP Home Edition there is a statement : "And don't forget to mark the System State check box to protect your Registry and system configuration". But there was no check box on the backup program, so could someone please tell me how to back that up "manually" by mentioning the directory where this information is stored.     - Autoplay Feature has Stopped Working The autoplay feature seems to have stopped working on a computer. Autoplay is enabled for all drives including the fixed drives (according to Tweak UI). No matter how I confugure Properties->Autoplay nothing happens when the drive is "activated" - i.e. a DVD is inserted or a camera's plugged in, or a removale disk is attached. If I configure the optical drive to start WMP when a DVD is inserted nothing happens, if I configure it to offer a range of options nothing happens. This used to work I'd insert a DVD and WMP would play it. Same thing with my camera, it used to bring up the camera and scanner wizard - this does not happen any more, nor do I get a range of options. In other words the whole Autoplay feature seems to have stopped working. The OS/Version is XP-Home SP2 - according to Windows Update the only missing updates are SP3 and Silverlight, it's hard to believe that either of those would fix the problem.     - Making an XP reinstallation disc It used to be that manufacturers supplied a copy of Windows that you could use to reinstall the OS in case it got messed up. That seems to have gone out of style. My IBM ThinkCentre desktop has a hidden hard-drive partition with the files needed to reinstall XP. But what if the hard-drive goes bad after the warranty is expired? It looks like I lose the XP license. It seems unreasonable. So I want to make a CD or DVD that would reinstall XP---not backup all my documents---I would make a separate backup of my own data. I just want to be able to restore the OS to a clean state starting from an optical disc just as people used to do with the OEM reinstall disc. How can somebody do that?     - task bar and more disappeared Ok i know that this is an easy fix- but i dont remember the remedy.     - help, access denied I had a motherboard crash. Putting together a new machine. Inxtalled XP Pro on a new hard drive in the new machine. All fine. Then moved the old hard drive to the new machine with all the data and files. For some reason, I can't access some files I need. Like the database from Clipmate or any files under the identity of the administrator of the old machine, which is the same as the new one.     - Deleting Windows/ uninstall files for updates. In the Windows/ folder there are many files with scarey names like $ntServicePackUninstall$ and $NtuninstallKB885836$. Most of them are a year or more old. I understand that they are needed if you want to uninstall an update. I recently installed SP3, which went off flawlessly (to my delight). I understand that SP3 includes all the prior updates. Does this mean that I can safely delete all those files except the one for SP3? What about SP1 and 2, are they also included in SP3? Is it okay to delete SP 1 and 2? Most of the files are listed in blue, which I understand means that they are compressed. Do you delete a compressed file the same way you delete a regular file? If it's not a good idea to delete them, is there some way I can hide them so they don't display when I open the Windows/ folder? I have lots of space on the HD, so I don't really have to delete them. One of my pc's runs Windows xp English version (SP3).

The pc has beeen setup with chinese fonts and the regional setting is
Chinese (Taiwan). I can enter Chinese texts and display them in say,
Microsoft Word without any problems.

Now I want to install Corel Draw (it was sold to my son as education
version), Chinese version onto the pc. When the installation CD is inserted
into the Drive, it starts the autorun and brings up the installation screen.

However, the display text shows many 'question marks' instead of the normal
Chinese characters. What do I miss out?
