On my computer WinXP PRO SP3 each action involving any .avi file is causing
Data Execution Prevention (DEP) intervention.
And it even does not involve openning .avi file.
Any click on .avi file (mouse left or right click), action like copying,
renaming, anything is invoking DEP and Dr.Watson shutting down the Windows
Explorer.
It does happen to every .avi file I have on my system and that includes some
sample .avi supplied with commercial products.
It must be the real .avi file. When I renamed .txt file to .avi file there
was not problem with that "new" .avi file.

Why my Windows does not like .avi files?

My DEP settings are set to default settings:
"Turn on DEP for Essential Windows programs and services only"
and I want to keep it that way.

Your thoughts appreciated,
Jack

My thoughts: I'd keep this to one thread and stop starting a new thread
with a new header to make it look like a new subject.

Try this. First create a System Restore point then

Go to Start->Run and enter the following line and click OK or Press the
Enter Key

regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

It worked a charm for me with SP3. Read more about it here

has to say.

This has to do with how Windows XP previews files when opened with Explorer.

Suggestions:

1. Disable thumbnail view by going to Start/Run/CMD: regsvr32 /u
shmedia.dll
2. And/or run this edit. This edit prevents high usage when browsing AVI
files.

Automated:

AVI Search Remove (Line 74)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Manual Edit: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to the key below and
delete the default data (right pane).

Or:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler

Windows Stops Responding When You Click a Large AVI File in Windows
Explorer" http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822430

Thank you very much Xandros and Kelly for your replies.

To Big_Al:
I've asked for the heavy but not necessary big guns.
If you do not see any differences between both threads better keep mum.

I do appologize. I was watching threads from 4 different people and 3
of them (not yours) were not cross posted. Yours was okay, and
ironically I said something to you and not the others. Oh well, its
just not my day. I usually don't say anything. See, I *should* keep
mum. Have a good one.!
