 - Am I allowed to do this...? I purchased and installed an Upgrade version of Windows XP Home on an old desktop PC several years ago. I've since removed the hard drive and retired that old PC to the local recycling station. I would like to upgrade my laptop that came with Windows 2000 Pro with this XP Home OS since I did pay for it - I still have the disk and product key. I am unable to download and install anything, on some items I am getting the message: 'Windows Installer Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceding with this install.' But how can I find out which 'other installation is already in progress'? Anyone know, please?  - help, access denied I had a motherboard crash. Putting together a new machine. Inxtalled XP Pro on a new hard drive in the new machine. All fine. Then moved the old hard drive to the new machine with all the data and files. For some reason, I can't access some files I need. Like the database from Clipmate or any files under the identity of the administrator of the old machine, which is the same as the new one. Is there a way to get past whatever it is that's stopping me. The error is 'access denied,' etc........ Is there a hack that can get me into my own files??? I had stored passwords etc where i thought they would be safe, but with the motherboard dying, they are a lot safer than I needed.........Appreciate any suggestions......thanks..  - Deleting Windows/ uninstall files for updates. In the Windows/ folder there are many files with scarey names like $ntServicePackUninstall$ and $NtuninstallKB885836$. Most of them are a year or more old. I understand that they are needed if you want to uninstall an update. I recently installed SP3, which went off flawlessly (to my delight). I understand that SP3 includes all the prior updates. Does this mean that I can safely delete all those files except the one for SP3? What about SP1 and 2, are they also included in SP3? Is it okay to delete SP 1 and 2? Most of the files are listed in blue, which I understand means that they are compressed. Do you delete a compressed file the same way you delete a regular file? If it's not a good idea to delete them, is there some way I can hide them so they don't display when I open the Windows/ folder? I have lots of space on the HD, so I don't really have to delete them.  - Should I delete ZLT####.TMP FILES? In the C:\Windows\temp folder there are some 400 files named zlt plus a number with the TMP extention. Most seem to be about one year old, but a few are newer. The size is listed as 1 kb. I opened some with Notepad, but nothing displays. Can I safely delete these files, assuming that they will allow me to delete them.  - Unable to Download I use Windows XP Service Pack 2 and IE7. I have been trying to download Flash Player, I click on download and am asked to add the ActiveX Control which I do. Then the box appears inviting me to Install, which I click on, the box goes, then nothing. I have checked the ActiveX Controls list for my computer and the one for Flash Player isn't there.  - program windows not closing I have a strange problem. If i open a program window e.g. internet explorer, all is well for a short time, then the window refuses to respond to any command even to close. I then open prog man with ctrl alt del then close it by clicking twice on the 'x' close box(it won't close on the first click) then all is well again for another length of time.  - copying many files to 1 dir Can you help me please. I have; many directories with 1 or 2 gif files in each I want to; copy gif files from many directories to one directory. I downloaded xxcopy. but it was too complex for me to find the correct command. Many years ago I could write .bat files. but have forgotten most of that.  - Can I edit what's displayed in the "Type" column of Details view? Somewhere along the upgrade path Irfanview not only assigned itself to open almost all image files but started changing what they're called in the folder details view, from JPG to "Irfanview JPG File", BMP to "Irfanview BMP File", etc. Apart from the effrontery of the act, it also means I have to keep that column 9 letters wider than I'd like, sheer wastage since I can already tell it's an "Irfanview ... File" by the little red logo attached in the name column. Where can I edit these back to display simply JPG File, etc? I've looked in Folder Options / File Types, and the files are all JPG File, etc. rather than the annoying "Irfanview xxx". (I do find the "Irfanview xxx" under Associated File Types if I want to define a new registered file type in the Create New Extension box. But that doesn't explain why, for instance, JPG shows as simply "JPG File" in Folder Options but "Irfanview JPG File" in the Explorer window itself.) And yes, I know I can set the Name column to include the full extension, but do like to have the Type column as well, for instance to sort by type or just as a cleaner visual cue.  - McAfee For several years I had the entire Norton secuity system installed on my computer and I removed it because it made everything work slower. Then I had the free AVG anti-virus program on but was afraid that it was letting certain things in. So, recently, I put on the entire McAfee plan which was free from my high-speed internet provider. But things seem a little slower with it, but only at times, such as when I have several Internet Explorer windows open and many tabs open on, as well as several programs running. In your experience, is this slowness due to McAfee? It's not as bad as with Norton...but it is slower than if I didn't have McAfee at all. Any solutions to this slowness? Somewhere is encryption turned on on desktop and i don't know where to turn it off so when moving files i have problems and ignoring messages... 2. So if uninstalled, then disk formatted(3 partitions, 25gb+25+25) so i would have clean formatted disk(i thnink without partitions !?) but...the disk imaging is troubling me cause i'm doing it through winxp.  - Svchost.exe generating problems - PC is hanging - have to reboot Hi On our network with about 25 PCs (all with XP SP2 (one with SP3 - also has problem)), some of the PCs have problems with Svchost.exe. The error message they get is: "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". If I look into the error signature details I find: szAppName: svchost.exe szAppVer: 5.1.2600.2180 szModName: TSP5.tsp szModVer: 5.0.980.0 Offset: 0000e203 After the report has been sent to Microsoft the PC is hanging and the PC must be rebooted. Before sending the report you can continue working on the PC (leave the error message on the desktop) The strange thing is that the PCs some time stops with the error message at the same time. I have searched out Exchange/File server to se if there was any related error messages, but I can't find. I have disabled "Windows update" on two of the PCs without any result. (Have manually run Windows update to be sure they are up to date). I have also installed SP3 on one of the PCs, and still that PC has problems. The PCs has been scanned with Windows Defender, Trend Micro Anti virus, and Spybot S&D. No problem can be found. I have searched the Internet without find any solution. Some products are advertising for "solving all svchost.exe problems" (True Sword). I am not sure if I can trust the product (True Sword), as it for me is not a known product.  - slipstreaming a bootable WinXP installation CD I made a backup of my WinXP installation CD by simply copying the files off into a folder and then onto a CD. This turned out to be the wrong way because the process didn't put any boot files onto the CD. I need desperately to reinstall or access the Recovery Console but unfortunately I have misplaced the original installation CD so I cant boot from CD. Since I have got all the installations files on the CD I copied , is it possible to slipstream the boot files and make a bootable CD? How do I go about it? Which boot files are needed?  - Computer never goes into standby My Dell computer has Windows XP Pro. My problem is that when I specify a standby time with: Desktop, Properties, Screensaver, Power, the computer never obeys these durations and never goes into standby. The screen saver works fine, and the time I select does'nt influence my problem (whether longer or shorter than standby time).  - Downloads I use Windows XP Service Pack 2 and IE7. When I click on any download if I save the download it goes to the little window with the percentage of download but when it reaches 99% it freezes, or if I click on run the download it goes to the little window with Verifying on it but never continues. I'm unable to download anything, I've tried updates, programs - such as Flash Player and also subinacl.msi which Flash Player led me to - I can't even add a picture to Incredimail which I've used without problem for years. I've tried System Restore back to 13th May, the 12th May was unsuccessful and I'm unable to take it back to April, it often does that. So can anyone out there help me please?  - Disconnecting My Internet connection is dropping out every so often. The connection icon is still on the task bar and the phone is 'hissing' (so connected) but I can't do anything. the connection window will not open....it sort of flicks on and then off....and there is no colour to the two small Monitor windows in the icon.  - Automating details view? A year ago for several months, I followed all the instructions on fixing getting details view in Windows XP pemanently but nothing works reliably. I've followed instructions on new computers that I've gone to when I go to new job contracts and there is no permanent fix. If setting it the first time doesn't work the first time, it usu. never works at all permanently and I have to reset to details view every single new reboot. s'okay. I've learned to live with it somewhat as one of the stupid little XP flaws can't work around (and, yes, followed ALL the instuctions given in this ng and from other places.) I've gotten around this XP flaw by using WE replacement. The difficulty lies in that scripts I don't want to change use WE first. To this end, I'm trying to find a way to automate setting details view on boot up. This fresh install around I'm not even getting the usu. minimal co-operation with XP and I seem to have to reset periodically, not even just upon reboot. I'm hoping for a vb script _or_something_ that will do this reset for me as I've lived with the reboot problem for a long time but can't stand that now I don't even have this. I'd just put the solution in my startup folder so that at least I'll have to do this less often. Too bad I rely on my folder scripts so much, but there you go ... Is there anything that can help with this? Again, I followed _every_ single line of instruction given in this ng and in other places over a period of several months and this is just one of those things that isn't reliably fixed. As I mentioned above, if the setting works the first time, it will work always, but if after a reboot XP reverts back to the default view, I have to reset after each reboot always. And watch out if you change the setting! It seems to be a one-time only deal, as I found to my cost.  - Themes keep changing Starting a few months ago, whenever I reboot my computer (XP Home) it starts up with 'My Favorite Theme' loaded, then at some point in the startup it reverts to 'Windows XP (Modified)', causing me to have to bring up the properties and set it back to 'My Favorite Themes'. Not earth shattering, but still an annoyance. Additionally, sometimes (not always) the Sound Theme and Pointer Themes also revert back to some generic theme.  - Multiple Drive letters per partition I have two drives 500Gb each - identical I have multiple partitions on each for future OS's and data areas. I just noticed that some of the partitions on the second drive have several letters assigned to them in the left column of my File managers This system is only about 2 months old. The primary drive (the one with my daily XP64 in the first partition ) has only one letter per partition C-D-E and F My sole DVD player is assigned G The secondary drive (where there is a test version of XP64 on the primary partition) has H and H again - primary partition F and I - on next partition Shows up as I:\ when selected G and J - next shows up as J :\ when selected to display H and K and K - next shows up as K:\ I and L next shows up as L:\ when selected M - next N - next So there are no conflicts in the access only in the listing of these letters after the Volume name in the left column.... and the assignments are operationally sequential These may have appeared at anytime in recent weeks - I do not use them (I use M as my sole data partition till now) and so have not paid much attention until I just decided to begin using a second data partition - and looked closer at what I had to pick from. The only clue I have to this behavior -- is just recently I went from running exclusively from the default Admin Logon - to creating a second admin account (new name) and when i realized i lost acccess to all my settings and tweaks in the default I copied as much as i could from the default Admin folder to the new folder (not sure i got everything that would copy but most - except items that were "in use" and couldn't be overwritten) Not sure if this is the cause of this but i would like to clear this up.  - Folders reverting to default format Lately it seems that when I open a folder, it often comes up not in the format (size, choice of 'View') it had before closing but in some kind of generic size and showing Tiles (never a choice I use!). Not a big deal on a case by case basis, but it's happening increasingly and often enough to be a nuisance .. plus it seems a possibly worrisome symptom. Possibly related -- occasionally when opening a document in Wordpad it will open in a landscape format, with several inches of blank to the right of the right margin, rather than the more portrait-shape display with window squeezed down to the margins that I always adjust it to.  - Sound I install the sound drivers ok and the 'logoff' sound, sounds, but then after a reboot the sound has gone again. It is via 823x . The sound under Device manager are all installed ok and under 'sounds' in control panel, the small test icon displays and works with each of the windows sounds but nothing is heard. I have removed the file from the M/Bd Cd for that chipset and ut it on the H/D and if I reinstall fro there (no reboot required) it works fine.  - Frequent copying of large number of folders & files I asked this over in the xpmusic group also but thought I might improve my chances by putting it here as well. I regularly copy my music files to a second internal hard drive and also to a removable Lacie. The exercise consists of a folder with a hundred or so sub folders containing 9,000+mp3 files. Is there any way to copy only those files which aren't already on the two backup drives?  - "Incorrect Function" for CD burning O/S Windows XP Home Edition I am having a problem with my CD drive that looks like a software issue. The basic background is that I can use the "D" drive to play music CD's but am unable to write text to the CD and when I try to "save as" from Word, I get the following error message "Incorrect Function You do not have access to the folder 'D:\'. See your administrator for access to this folder" The CD which was working six months ago is a Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-308B DVD/CD-ROM drive that is OEM with the IBM unit. Since I generally save day-to-day files to a floppy, I seldom use the CD for storage but am in need of it now for some large file creations. I have run a "Troubleshoot" on the hardware and it comes back as working without problems. I have also checked for software updates but the driver is current. I have searched the Microsoft Knowledge base to find a relative solution but the problems do not appear to resemble mine. I have no idea where to look for an answer and most importantly a "fix" so if there is someone in here who can guide me it would be appreciated. It is possible that it is an easy fix but I am not the brightest penny when it comes to registries and buried files so if you have a solution, perhaps I could ask you to be specific in your guidance.  - How do I get rid of a partially installed 2nd operating system? My 2 year old computer needed to have the system mirror reinstalled. In addition to the system mirror there was a copy of SP2, but before I could install that it automatically downloaded and installed 67 updates to XP. I asked here if I should also install the SP2 disk and the early advice was that I should. So I did. Since the updates already did what was necessary, the computer started to install a 2nd XP operating system. (maybe I did something else wrong, but I don't know what.) When I realized what was happening I aborted the second install, but it is now hanging there. When I boot it asks if I want to use the first operating system or the one that is partially installed.  - XCOPY's capabilities Many moons ago, before settling on Drive Image and GHOST to make complete backup clones of my Master Operating System, I tried XCOPY and couldn't successfully produce a bootable cloned system on a Slave hard drive. I got good advice here. (Thank you, Richard). I don't want to start that research over again to answer one of my colleagues who has asked me why I don't just use XCOPY, with its many switches.  - No sound from Speaker I have just reformatted the hard drive and placed windows xp home edition back on. I am getting no sound from speakers. I went into device manager and under audio device on high definition audio bus there is a yellow question mark. I clicked it and it says drivers are not installed. So i pressed reinstall drivers and it came up with a hardware install wizard asking me to insert the recovery disc cd. I did this and it says it could not find the software to load the driver. It might have been accidently disconnected from the back of your
computer. Or, you might have to reinstall the Audio
Drivers. They can be found on a software CD that came with the machine
or if you know what kind of Audio Device
you have then go to the manufacturers website. Or Dell, HP etc.
