IE7 TABS are not working properly...
I frequently attempt to use additonal tabs...only to have the new link
that I select for the new tab, to start up over my initial start up page. I
often have to create two tabs ater the original start up page. I find that
the first tab then acts as some kind of buffer and allows the second tab to
open properly. What is wrong here? Tag: Administrative Account and Password Tag: 323372

XP - SP3
From PC Pitstop:-
On Wednesday, May 7th 2008, Microsoft released the long awaited Windows XP
SP3. Almost immediately hundreds of users registered complaints ranging from
complete crashes to looping reboots. Similar problems have accompanied
previous service packs and are usually the result of conflicting software.
Now, a few days later, it's known that many of the reports are specific to
HP Computers with AMD processors. Copies of Windows intended for Intel-based
machines were used by OEMs on AMD-based computers. According to Microsoft
the blame sits squarely on HP and possibly other OEMs
Jesper Johansson, a well respected MVP in Windows Security, has been helpful
in identifying this problem and was quoted in a May 12th Article from Gregg
Keizer of ComputerWorld. "The problem is that HP, and possibly other OEMs,
deploy the same image to Intel-based desktops that they do to AMD-based
desktops". Many of us already know the problems associated with installing
the wrong drivers on a system and this is exactly the same situation.
Thankfully this problem is restricted to HP desktop models and does not
affect their laptops. Full article here:-

Unable to Enable Automated Updates in Services
After updaing my PC's with the SP3 I am consistently getting the red shield
telling me to turn on my automated updates. This is true as well with
Onecare making the same statement. The SP3 also has deleted my restore
history making it now impossible to restore to a certain point any longer. I
now have to setup a new restore point which really pisses me off. Even after
the many and frustrating attempts to follow Microsoft Self-Help Options and
Solutions I find that there is nothing short o a fix apparently. I have gone
into the SERVICES and manually made the selections accordingly and all I get
is:
(1058 Automated Update Disabled and/or has no enabled devices) or
(url://c:\windows\system32\mmcndmgr.dll/views.htm).
Regards to the first: No duh, you cannot enable it, How much more redundant
can MS get?
Regards to the second: Well, so redundant that they can't even allow a
simplified means to correct something they allowed their programmers to
totally screw up.
Has anyone had this problem and if so, have you been forunate enough to gain
access to a fix? This issue has occured on both of my WINDOWS XP PC's and my
one and only VISTA Professional PC.
Thank you in advance for all you can provide to these issues.

Postscript Fonts -- VERY DESPERATE!
Finalized a catalog at home in CT -- client has urgent beyond-final-minute
changes and I'm in FL so I asked my son to FedEx down a disk that has
everything on it, including fonts. TrueType fonts are no problem. But trying
to install PostScript fonts I'm getting one of two error messages:
1. "Unable to install the font. File <FONT> is either invalid or damaged."
OR
2. "The copyright holder of <FONT> will not allow their font to be converted
to TrueType. Please contact the font vendor for more information."
I've never had this happen doing this catalog before and share the fonts
with the printer all the time to mass print.
If I can't figure out what the problem is in the next hour or two I have to
fly home tomorrow from this beautiful Sarasota to the Northeast and I'm
begging for help!!!
Thanks to anyone who can help me!

No desktop at boot
Running windows xp home with sp2. When I boot the machine it comes to the
desktop but no icons are present. The same thing happens if I boot to safe
mode. I can do ctrl-alt-del and get the task manager. from there I can
pretty much run anything I want. When I look under the processes tab
explorer.exe is not present. If I enter the command to run it, I can see the
desktop bottom tollbar flash for a secone and then go away. It is as thought
explorer.exe turns off as soon as it turns on. Will re-install windows if
need be, but really don't want to go through the process if not necessary.
Are there any other solutions out there? Thanks!

Dell Dimension E521+Windows XP MCE 2005+SP3 Experience
*** This message has been REPOSTED not CROSS-POSTED in Both MS Newsgroups
and the Dell related Newsgroup ***
Sorry about that, but I use two (2) different News Servers.
To anyone interested,
Before you do a SP3 upgrade, I can't stress enough, that you should purchase
a backup or imaging program like Acronis TrueImage, (version 10 or higher
should be your choice.) Make a backup/image of your current OS, so if you
have problems, you can easily return to a working copy of your OS. Saves
allot of grey hair, and headaches.
If you have the following Dell PC (or other similar models) with an AMD
Processor, and using the image that was installed by the factory, you may
have run into the reboot problem that occurred after installing XP SP3
update:
(My Configuration)
Dell Dimension E521
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 Ghz
3 GB of RAM
80 GB Primary HDD
500 GB Secondary HDD
Windows XP MCE 2005
Using the restore image from the factory/hidden partition.
MS LifeCam VX-6000
Windows Live Messenger (current version)
There is a fixed mentioned on the net to change a registry setting in XP,
before trying to install XP SP3. This did not work for me. After making a
backup of the keys listed below, I deleted/removed the following registry
Keys:
1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\intelppm
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\intelppm
Or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00X\Services\intelppm (Random
ControlSet #)
These keys will have a reference of:
"DisplayName: Intel Processor driver"
Dword: Start
Value: 4 (Hex) (This value did not work for me.)
I did not have to remove the following keys, because it referred to an event
log. The upgrade worked, and I left the keys there in the registry.
3.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\System\intelppm
4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\Eventlog\System\intelppm
After the upgrade, things may still be a little sluggish still, I found that
I had to remove, then reinstall, or upgrade several IM programs, digital/web
cameras and their drivers/programs, some Dell Hardware drivers, etc... I
also upgraded from MS Media Player 10 to 11. Do these changes after the SP3
update not before. Also do another Microsoft/Windows Update check.

windows media player
The question that I have is that when I author a DVD and use Windows Media
Player to play the disc there is no title or track information available. The
only information that I can find is in the privacy statement regarding
Windows Media Player,
"When playing a DVD, Windows Media Player attempts to locate information
associated with that DVD, such as the DVD name, title names, chapter names,
director name, and release date. This information is added to the overall
list of information that is kept in the Media Library. To obtain this
information, Windows Media Player sends a unique DVD identification number to
WindowsMedia.com. No personally identifiable information is obtained or
stored during this transaction."
So, how would I get the information on to WindowsMedia.com in order for
Windows Media Player to download it? I hear that there may be a way to
physically mail a copy of the DVD along with the information that I need in
Windows Media Player but I do not know where to send it.

Configuration utility message
I have been having the configuration utility message come up on my screen
everytime I boot the computer. I've tried starting in normal mode after
being requested to do so because it states that I am in selective/diaognostic
mode but that doesn't do anything, it keeps coming up no matter what, even
after rebooting several times. As to the operation of the system, it's fine
and I don't believe that it is in the mode the the message says. The problem
seems to have started after having a support technician taking remote control
of the system to do some trouble shooting for another program (HP). Do you
have any ideas about fixing this problem as it is very annoying.
Unfortuneatley the remote control link that he established was interrupted
and he never finished what he was doing and I was unable to get back to him.
He made some changes that included deactivating all microsoft services which
is all that I remember him doing while he was trouble shooting the HP
program. Could the system still be recoginizing him as the system admin.
and not allowing me to make necessary change to configuration utility to stop
this from coming up everytime I reboot?

Explorer Problems
I've been having a problem that I associated with IE7, but it might actually
be with Windows Explorer.
It takes up to 3 minutes for the box to come up when I add a Favorite in
IE7. This usually only occurs when I haven't been on the computer for awhile
(I keep it running) and it gradually gets faster, getting down to 30 seconds
and, in rare cases, one second. (It always took one second or less with IE6.)
I've also noticed that the Created date gets updated when I click on the
shortcut and sometimes the date gets updated without me even clicking on it
(i.e., I sort by date and a shortcut shows up at the top that I haven't
viewed in some time).
Has anyone else experienced these anomalies?

SP3 Continuous Reboot Solution
O/S Win 2000 SP2
Intel Based System
If you are having a continuous reboot problem after installing sp3 there is
a workaround solution. Please visit the following KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888372. If this does not work I suggest the
following procedure that has worked for me, Let â??Automatic Updateâ?? perform
the installation. Run the setup from the download location. After

platform other than an Intel based system then you may have to set the reg.

changes.

True Image restore problem.
Not strictly an XP problem but don't know where else to post it.
Advent 7096 laptop, ECS 331 m/b with onboard Ralink 2500 wireless adapter..
XP MCE/SP3, Acronis True Image 10.
I have a TI image of the laptop on an external USB HDD which I am trying to
restore.
If I start TI from Windows, select the image and restore to C: it tells me
that it has to reboot to complete. It reboots, gets as far as "loading,
please wait" in the Acronis loader and goes no farther, have waited up to an
hour!
Tried booting from a TI bootable CD created when installing TI. Same thing,
goes as far as "loading, please wait" and no farther.
I'm trying to avoid using the laptop recovery because I have updated
drivers, programs etc. in the image.
Might add that the reason I want to restore is because after installing SP3
my wireless LAN wouldn't work. Initially the LED on the keyboard came on
when the WLAN button was pressed but while the connection showed good signal
strength it couldn't find the router. After a while even pressing the WLAN
button the active LED won't even light!
Gone through the re-installing WLAN drivers, checking firewall etc. but no
good.
It may be a coincidence it happened after SP3, maybe the wireless adapter
has failed.
Have also installed SP3 on desktop and it went flawlessly.
Any advice appreciated.

I have XP Professional. Is it possible to have more than one Administratie
account with a different password for each of those administrative accounts?
