word should let you create and customize shortcuts to features on the
toolbar. i use the symbol function frequently, and it is a pain to keep
having to move my hand from the keyboard. is there a way that i can set
custom shortcuts? i know that in word perfect the shortcut is ctrl+w. if
someone can let me know about how to create custom shortcuts or the existing
one for symbol, that would be great!!
thanks

See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/AsgnCmdOrMacroToHotkey.htm

In the Tools > Customize > Keyboard dialog, select Insert in the
category list and select InsertSymbol in the commands list.

You can also create shortcut keys for individual symbols instead of
one for the entire dialog. See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/InsertSpecChars.htm.
