    - Find invisible symbol fields in WP files imported in Word 2002? I'll be very grateful for any help with this frustrating problem that involves a special kind field in Word 2002 that is normally invisible - and that can't be revealed by any combination of the F9 key. This problem does not seem to occur with versions earlier or later than Word 2002 (XP) When you import a WordPerfect 5.x file into Word 2002, and the original file contains typographic symbols like curly quotation marks or dashes, Word 2002 does NOT convert the symbol into the equivalent native character in the current font, but instead creates an invisible field that takes the place of the original symbol. For the em-dash, for example, something that looks like an em-dash appears on screen and on the page, but it's not the same as Word's em-dash character; it's really a field, although nothing on screen shows that it's a field. So, if the original WP document contains an em-dash, you can't search and replace the em-dash in Word by entering ^+ in the search field (by using Find/More/Special), as you can to search for a real em-dash - and as far as I can tell, you can't search for the WP-imported em-dash at all. And you can't search for the invisible field by entering ^d either. If you copy the imported em-dash from the text and paste it into the Find field, you get an upper-case C, which doesn't help at all. You can't reveal these fields by using any combination of the F9 keys, but I found that you can see them by saving the file in WinWord 2.0 format and reopening it in Word 2002. (CrossEyes from www.levitjames.com also displays the fields.) At this point, you can see that (for example) a quotation mark imported from WP is really a field that looks like this: {symbol 65\f "WP Typographic Symbols"\s 12} But you can't search for this field by using "^d symbol" in the Find dialog. You CAN search them if you add a space after the opening brace and before the closing brace, but I can't find a way to add those spaces automatically. Question: is there a way to use VBA to find these fields and replace these hidden fields with the native Windows characters? I'd like to have a macro that will replace invisible fields containging quotation marks, section marks, paragraph marks, em and en dashes when a WP file is opened in Word 2002.     - Single and double data types Hi I have a theoretical question on this subject but I'm naff at maths so don't laugh. From a book, I can see that the lower and upper limits of a single data type is -3.402823E38 to - 1.401298E-45 for negative values 1.401298E-45 to 3.402823E38 for positive values I don't even know how to do calculations with exponents on my computer to check for myself but what I'd like to know is a How do - exponents work eg 10 to the power of 2 = 100 10 to the power of -2 = ? b Do the limits of a single or double data type leave a 'gap' in between? ie A short data type (-32,768 to 32767) can clearly handle any figure in between but this isn't so clear for me with regards to floating point data types where there seems to be a gap.     - Creating secured word "Viewers" Has anyone built or came accross a way to share documents by creating a "viewer" type application. Issue: We sell a tool that produces high value documents. We have automated a complex sales process: ROI to the point that a large sales force can get by with only one user liscense. I am attempting to account for all of the true users of the documents. One solution would be to create a vba application that the user must sign into before opening the document. The sign in data gets validated against a web database server. The users must buy the viewer. We already have the technology in place to link the activated application to the cpu to prevent multiple users from sharing one sign on.     - Unlocking a Protected Form Template Am working on "protect-unprotect method without losing form field data" macro to allow the user to insert documents, use tools that are normally not available in a Word2000 protected document, etc. I already have code written to do most of this. Once unlocked, is there an easy way to designate sections of the document, that when "clicked in", would automatically lock the document down again? Does VBA see "File-Close" and "clicking the "X" in the upper right corner of the active window as the "same thing"?     - Line feed in wdDialogFileSummaryInfo.Title field? I'm building a template for documentation. I'm using a tree control on a user form to allow the user to select from a list of products. I'm storing the product name in the Title field. I'm using the contents of the Title field for the title on the cover page of documents based on my template. Sometimes the text I have to put there is too long for the available space and the line wraps. I want to be able to control the point where the line wraps. For example, rather than having something like: "Product Family Product Variation Name" I need to have: "Product Family Product Variation Name" Right now I'm populating the tree control from an extensive collection of Add statements but I wrote those before I realized the line wrapping would be problematic. The tree control doesn't care about line wrapping... it just puts horizontal scroll bars in place to allow me to see the whole text string. So now, I've got the text that I want to use in a spreadsheet in two columns... Line One and Line Two. What I figure I'm going to have to do is examine the contents of the Line Two column and if there's text there, I want a line break before it. I wouldn't mind being able to populate the tree control out of the same spreadsheet file but that's not a dealbreaker. So what's the best approach I can take to make this happen? Do I need to abandon the concept of using the Title field? Is it possible to both populate the tree control (without line breaks) and create the value to insert in the Title field (with line breaks) from the same spreadsheet?     - Aligning Decimals in Table I have numbers such as the following in some cells in a Word 2000 table which are pt\ut there by VBA. The numbers are in cells in column 1, in rows 5, 6 and 7 $40,000.00 for the first period $75,000.12 for the next period $100,000.19 at age 89 I would like to execute some VBA which would align the numbers by the decimal point so that the above would appear as $40,000.00 for the first period $75,000.12 for the next period $100,000.19 at age 89 I tried the following VBScript (see below) (which applies to the entire column) and all it does is move numbers such as 3. in other cells of column 1 off to the right but has no effect on the dollar amounts mentioned. How does one do it??     - AutoCheck text to another document. What I'm trying to accomplish is to control electronic controlled documents in our company. People keep pulling the word files from the Quality folder to their desktop thus created extra uncontrolled documents. What I would like to do is create a macro or vba code that would autocheck a date on the document located in the quality folder to the one that is open.     - Pausing Macro, Returning to Pause Point I am working on automating a document compilation task. The number of potential documents to be included in the single document number in the hundreds, and eventually each document will be automated as well before inclusion in the final compilated document. It is unlikely a user would be able to complete the process in a single sitting, both because of the number of documents involved but also because the user may not have all of the information needed to complete the task and may have to look something up. On a userform, I would like to be able to give the user the option to quit and return to the project later where they left off. Basically, I have one userform where the user selects the documents to be included in the project. When the user selects "OK", the documents selected begin compiling. When a document is reached that is automated, a userform for that document appears, the user makes the appropriate selections and that document is then added. The process continues when the user closes the userform until the last document selected has been added. I can save the values of the userform so that if the user quits he can return to the userform with the values he selected saved. The problem is that if a user quits, he quits in the middle of a macro that is running. Is it possible to not only return the values entered on the userform, but to also be able return to the point in the macro where the macro quit running when the user quit?     - Macro doesn't perform I am trying to insert preformatted frames in a document. First just recorded a macro of inserting a frame, but then I was unable to record the steps for selectiong and altering the size and fill color. Next I formatted a frame the way I like and created an AutoText entry "AddFrame". I can use Insert>Autotext to insert the frame and I can recorde a macro of preforming that step.     - Document variables I am having problems assigning the value of document variables to a text box in VBA. It seams that the active document index for a document variable changes every time I create a document variable. For example, when I start creating variables the first one is usually indexed as 1 then the next would be 2 and then I find that it jumps a few, then when I create a few more variables the active document index goes wild and I am unable to access the variables. The question: How do I find out what active document variable index number each of the document variables is at and is there another way of getting the value of the document variables in VBA. Before the document variable idea, I was using the includeText field to map to external files. The problem with the includeText field feature is that it is not portable.     - Creating Auto Section Headers I use Word 2000 to create time lines of criminal investigation, which often exceed 50 pages in length. Because of the extensive detail in which each event is described, it is not uncommon for several pages in a row to be without a section heading. This results in reader often loosing track of where they are chronologically in the document. Therefore, I am trying to figure out a way to print the most recent Level 1 section heading, which is the date, as a header atop each page. This would allow the reader to see where they are at anytime, just as one can do by referencing the top of a page in a dictionary and seeing the first and last words listed on the page. I'm using a macro to define a print area by specifying columns but I'm pulling blank rows in the resulting printout. Is there a way to get Excel to ignore blank rows in a print area? In this case, the blanks are at the bottom of the spreadsheet so if I could tell me the last row containing data (or the first blank row), it would work.     - updatable link to MS Access field ? Hello, BRIEF DESCRIPTION: How can I insert in Word a 'dynamic' link to a particular field in an Access Database? LONG DESCRIPTION: We're faced with the following issue for a big documentation project. Basically, the project would consist of maintance documentation which would be stored in: - several hundreds of Word files, containing descriptions, removal procedures, etc. - an Access database containing (among other things) a table with 2 fields: ToolNumber and ToolDescription. In the Word documents, we would like to insert one or more tool numbers and tool descriptions, as retrieved from the database. For example, through some Word VBA form, the author would selected tool number "T103" and at the current position in his document this tool number "T103" and corresponding description "Torque wrench M=30 Nm" would be inserted. The problem is that we want this to be 'dynamic': if the description of the tool is changed in the Database, then the description should change in the Word document as well. Either upon opening of the Word document or after some kind of command (e.g. F9 or VBA macro, or ...) My idea is upon inserting in Word to put the tool number text and description text in a specific style (e.g. "ToolStyle") and write a Word VBA application that will: - scan the document for this style, - look up the toolnumber in the Access Database, - retrieve the (new) description, - and (if changed) replace the old description in Word. I'm not sure this is the best possible solution. Does anybody has some easier or/and more bulletproof or/and non-VBA solutions, that will do the job?     - Section TOC Hi I am using Word XP. I would like to automate my procedure of inserting a table of contents relating to an individual section. Currently I highlight the section, name it as a boomark, insert a table of contents at the top of the section (underneath the heading)and then modify the field code to only look for data in the bookmark:-see below {TOC \h \z \t "Section Sub Heading,2" \b SectionTwo} Section Sub Heading is the name of my style I wish to be listed in my Section TOC. \b is the switch, followed by the name of the bookmark SectionTwo What I would like to be able to do is automate the whole procedure. Here is my idea, I would really appreciate some advice on whether you think this is a good way to go about it and also some advice on a couple of commands I have been unable to find information about. I have the code for finding the number of sections in my document, I will then loop through each section in the document highlighting each section and naming it as a boomark. I would like the name of the bookmark to be the number of the section (Section2,section7 etc..) How do I find out the number of the section I have highlighted?? I can then insert an extra paragraph after the first paragraph then insert a TOC. How is best to automate the insertion of a TOC and then add the switch \b followed by the name of the current section bookmark.     - Incrementing an invoice number every time the template is printed Hi all, I was wondering if someone could help me with the below problem I am having. I would like to create a template with an invoice number incrementing. I have the coding to do this via a macro that the invoice number increments every time you open the template. What I would like to do instead is after having created a bookmark for the invoice number, that every time I print the template (for example ... 20 pages), the invoice number increments, saves to the bookmarked area and to a text file. If I was to open and print the template again (for example ... another 20 pages) then the invoice number will continue to increment (I.e. 21, 22, 23 etc) from the previous time the template was opened.     - bookmark I'm using Visual Studio 6 to write a Visual Basic app that opens an existing word document template and makes a number of changes and additions to it. I'm having a difficult time in trying to, among other things, move the cursor (the insertion point) to the end of the file or to a bookmark. When I try to move the cursor to the end of the document, I get the error message: Error 4102: Bad parameter I've tried everything I can think of to fix the problem, to no avail.     - How to prevent editing on a merged document based on a dot templa Does anyone know how to prevent the user from editing a merged document created by an application? We use a dot net application to create a mail merge and when the user chose so can view the merged document with all the bookmarks populated with appropriate data. The user does not want to be able to edit the merge document. Is there any way to control that through the word object model in dot net or through IE? After the document is composed it is displayed to the user through a browser redirection. So if we can't disable editing in Word can we do in Internet Explorer?     - Win/Word XP *always* asks for Enable - any help? Ever since I was "upgraded" to Windows XP Pro and Word XP, I've tried unsuccessfully to get Word to recognize my macros on opening. I can not get a digital signature to stick. I've tried various methods from this NG and the KB, but no go. Besides just wanting to hit a custom button without having to enable macros, this really hampers automating from VB6.     - Problem with SendKeys and first Capital letter Hi when usign sendkeys in my vba programs I often run into ptoblem that the first capital letter that sendkeys types comes out twice. I suspected many things but my best guess it's somethign to do with AS YOU TYPE options that auto correct soem thigns, since mimics user typing. However I have not been able to find the actual option responsible for this. Has anyone else had simular problem?     - Using VB.Net or C#, utilizing the clipboard object, how to copy an MS Excel graphic from the clipboard to an image control and obtain its source reference Hello, Here is what I'm trying to do: -- Make sure both MS Excel and MS Word are running -- Create an Excel chart -- Save the Excel file -- Copy the Excel chart onto the clipboard using Ctrl + C -- Go to Word and look under Edit > Paste Special -- Note there is a source reference and an option to paste the chart as a metafile, etc. -- I would like to take this same information and make it available in a C# or VB.Net app For example, create a simple Windows application with a userform, an image control, a label and a single command button. Let's say that after the Excel chart is on the clipboard, one clicks the Windows application command button and Voila!, the imate control now contains a copy of the Excel chart and the label contains the reference information. I can make this work utilizing older technologies (i.e. WIN API to access the clipboard, etc.). Using the WIN32 API, there is a clipboard format called "OwnerLink". Similarly to the .Net clipboard, one would register this format, check for it on the clipboard and then retrieve using several API calls. There are also clipboard formats called "Link Descriptor" and "Object Descriptor" under WIN32. It appears that, under .Net, there are currently no methods or properties available to extract a source reference when a user places an Office object / graphic on the clipboard.     - Referencing Macros Hi All, Basically my problem is this - I have created a mail merge document from an access database and want to date stamp the records each time they are printed from the mail merge (i.e. some printed one day and stamped with that date, others on another day).     - Images are not displayed in Word2003 Running Win2KSP4 & all patches - Word2K3SP1 Since a while now I can't see images anymore in some documents which were generated as WordML (through xslt transformation). I can't remember when this problem exactly occurred for the first time and thus heave no idea what could have caused it. In the near past these documents have been displayed succesfully on my machine. When I open these documents on another machine (same setup) the images are still visible though. I have a dozen EZP buttons on my toolbar and can figure
out why and cannot remove them.
