    - Word 2003 custom Menus change and disappear Does anyone have a fool proof method for stabilizing custom menus (on the menu bar) in Word? I have a menu in a global template that should always show, as well as document templates that each contain a menu I want to appear only when someone is in a document created from that template. The problem SEEMS to stem from OTHER people's software -- the menus will be there but then they disappear, or multiple copies appear or the menu is suddenly empty or has the name for one menu with choices for another menu on it. Note: Custom TOOLBARS seem stable, it is just the MENU that is problematic. I have been fighting this for years and have done a lot of research but so far everything I try has a hiccup at some point. The programming is all VBA in Word .dot templates. So far I have tried: - Using tools, customize to create the menus w/in the appropriate templates -- works great on my computer, but menus disappear/duplicate constantly on about 80% of my clients. - Programmatically creating the menus -- this is good for the global template menu -- at first -- but somewhere through the day it gets trashed. I can't get the template specific menus to behave. They constantly disappear. - Write an event handler to delete and then recreate all menus and display as (Tried with the "Document change" or "WIndow Activate" event for the Word application) -- this seemed to work at first but suddenly the problems returned. I did not want to just "show" the menus per the event handler because they would suddenly have the wrong buttons or be empty part way through the day. (Maybe I am not writing it right.)     - Comparing Word documents I inherited some Word VBA code to format a report based on rtf output from DOORS. I made some changes to the VBA to improve performance (it used to run for more than hour) and now I would like to compare the Word document produced from the latest version with a Word document produced from the previous version of the Word VBA macros. I am running Microsoft Office Word 2003. I opened the more recent copy, and then: 1. pulled down Tools-->Compare and Merge documents... 2. checked the "Legal Blackline" checkbox 3. selected the baseline word document produced under the old macro set 4. clicked on "Compare" The only differences that showed up was that every row of the main table is black-barred with (on each page) a change box pointing at the header saying "Formatted Table". When I move my mouse over the "Formatted Table" change box it says "Author formatted Table:" Any clue what this is trying to tell me?     - Setting a Range Can someone tell me how to set a range for the last section of a document? Or as an alternative how to set the range to the section where the cursor is?     - PLEASE respond ASAP Hi there, It's a crazy problem i'm facing. I have to work on many documents and there will be a footer kind of note, same note I have to keep in each document but the page is not the same. For example, there is a word "xyz" and we dont know in the document where it comes, when it appears there should be a footnote in the first instance of the document. If it comes in the second page of one document, it comes on someother page in other document. SO I thought of recording a macro as the text is same for all. Now it is working, when I say run it appears BUT IN ALL PAGES OF THE DOCUMENT whereas I require only in the active page, that is the page where I am working and is needed. I mean, when I go to a particular page and run the macro, it should come only on that particular page and not the entire document. How can I edit the code to do that? Where and what should add inside the coding to write the text in particular page. Otherwise, everytime I have to either open or keep open the other document, copy and paste.     - Random Number Question I am trying to generate a random number by seeding randomizer with the date and time. I need to be able to verify that the seed and random number generated are correctly matched. But even with the same seed value typed in, I'm still getting random numbers.     - Date Control We recently had to migrate a good portion of our machines to Office 2003 Standard, the rest have Office 2003 Pro. As everyone probably knows, the VBA code that we utilized for Professional in regards to calendar controls does not work on Standard machines. We have tried coding on a Standard machine with date picker and then Professional get an error that object could not be found.     - How do I convert automatic simple list numbering to actual text? I have a batch of RTF files in which the author used automatic numbering (simple list style, not SEQ fields). I need to import these RTF files into a program that will choke on the automatic numbering, so I need to convert it to plain characters. How can I do this?     - background process to monitor cursor location This is a followup question from a previously answered thread: "clicking in protected forms: MS knowledge base article ID: 839950" from March 26, 2008 The problem is: In summary, the user must click or tab from one form field into another form field on a protected document or Word does not run the form field's 'on entry' and 'on exit' macros. My solution: Inside the Document_Open() subroutine, I am using the Timer and DoEvents functions in a While Loop to 'wait and watch' what the user is doing. When the cursor is 'properly' placed or 'improperly' found on one of the text form fields used for data entry, then a pointer to that field is stored. If the focus is moved 'properly' to another form field, the pointer is set to the new field. However, if/when the cursor is 'improperly' found in some other location, the validation routine is run and the pointer is reset (or set to the new data entry field). Finally, I am using the Document_Close() subroutine to set a flag that allows Word to kick out of the While Loop and exit the Document_Open() subroutine. My concern/question: Practically this appears to be working, although it makes the response sluggish (especially if focus is moved to a different Word Document). However, there is so much in this Windows world that I don't know and I am concerned that I have opened a 'pandora's box'. I have tried various combinations of Shift, Ctrl and Alt along with arrow keys for selecting the field with my keyboard while recording the macro, but no luck. So I need to modify the macro somehow so that it only selects the inserted field instead of returning to the beginning of the line before it sizes the font of the inserted field.     - Spellchecking template - receiving error message We are using a Word template to prepare formatted memos that are then emailed to our users. I found an article at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/SpellcheckProtectDoc.htm, which contained the code to unlock, spellcheck, and relock the template. It works very well but only on workstations that are set up to allow the user Admin access. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the workstations in our company are set up to only grant User level access and the spellcheck function doesn't work on those, even when we lowered the macro security level to Low. The security policy cannot be changed to allow everyone Admin access. Any suggestions to work around this problem and allow the spellcheck to run? Any help will be appreciated.     - FirstLineIndent read only in table cell I am using Microsoft Word 2003 and trying to write a macro which corrects some indenting problems in the cells of a document. I have a problem in that I do not seem to be able to set the value of FirstLineIndent, the indentation. Apart from using Range.Paragraphs(1), I've also used .ParagraphFormat.FirstLineIndent with exactly the same results. The document itself is not read-only, but "FirstLineIndent" seems to be.     - Code Hanging - Part II Recently I posted a question about code hanging after displaying a built-in dialog that got no response. I now have some more information that might help. It seems that the code only hangs if the built-in dialog allows the entry of text for insertion into the document and only if text is actually entered manually. The dialog in question in my previous post was the 'Caption' dialog. I've been working with the 'Envelopes and Labels' dialog recently and ran into the same problem - but only intermittently. So I had a look at when the code hung and when it didn't and discovered that if I fed the address information to the 'Envelopes and Labels' dialog programmatically (e.g. populated it with values from a UserForm), everything was fine. However, if I added or modified the address information manually - even after populating it originally from the UserForm - the code hung. I reckon this is some sort of bug in Word, and I don't for a minute imagine it's anything under my control. If I manually enter text into a dialog that's displayed through code, the code is going to hang. I'm just wondering: has anyone encounterd this problem previously and if you have, have you been able to find a workaround - or at least a way to 'unhang' the code? The problem is easy enough to recreate. Just create a UserForm with a single TextBox and a CommandButton, then add the following code to the click event for the button: Private Sub CommandButton1_Click() UserForm1.Hide Dialogs(wdDialogToolsCreateEnvelope).AddrText = TextBox1.Value Unload UserForm1 End Sub This should display the built-in 'Envelopes and Labels' dialog box with the value from the TextBox on the UserForm displayed in the 'Delivery address' field. If you just add the envelope to the document, the code should continue to run, but if you change the address info manually, it will hang.     - Search Word doc and record page number Hi all, I've tried a few ways to do this (which are gone now, otherwise I'd post them...sorry), but I'm not having much luck, if any. What I'd like to do is search a Word doc for terms that are contained in a text file (each term on a new line), then record the term and the page number it appeared on to another text file - creating an index, essentially. Reading the text file is no big deal, I don't think. I've done that with VBS before, so it can't be /that/ different in VBA. What I need to figure out how to do is search the Word doc and return the page number.     - Funky Macro? I am trying to create a macro that will insert a .jpg saved on the server into a Word document. I am recording the macro, naming it Signature, and storing it in Normal. I am using the menu bar for my selections (not using toolbar buttons). I am selecting menu bar item "DM" (firm created menu bar item), then Insert, Picture, and Cancel (as jpg's are not stored in DM but rather on the server), then selecting OK when prompted whether I want Word to open a document. Then I find the jpg on the server drive, select it, and click on OK. When I do this outside of recording a Macro, it works absolutely fine. The result of these steps taken while recording a macro, simply reads (when viewing the macro in VBA) as follows: Sub Signature() ' ' Signature Macro ' Macro recorded 4/2/2008 by ebanuelos ' End Sub I have even attempted it without using a mouse whatsoever, using the keyboard for selecting menu bar items and the tab key for selecting "cancel" when required, etc. and I still get the same result. The following field codes work just great for almost every instance: {={createdate \@ "yyyy"}+10 \# "0000"}{createdate \@ "MM"}{={createdate \@ "dd"}-01 \# "00"} Problem is, yesterday (4/1/08), those fields yielded: 20180400 -- not a real date. I know it will require combining the month & day portions of my fields into a contiguous field to get the subtraction of 1 day correct. Sorry if this has been asked recently or frequently.

Somehow all my projects are looked. If I download a dot-file, add it
and then try to open the macros in the editor, they are all locked.

Even if I myself create a dot-file, add a project, type some dummy
macrotext, close and then add that dot-file to another document, also
that project is locked. I can´t even open the properties.

The security settings are on the lowest level. Word 2003

What do I do wrong?

For the code to be open for editing, the template must be open as a
document, not merely loaded as an add-in.
