On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the View tab, clear all the check boxes in the Formatting marks area.

HTH,
Dave

Hi Hope,

I actually LIKE to work with paragraph marks, spaces, and tabs showing, so
that is how I knew where to look.

HTH stands for "Hope this helps"

Same here, never ever work without them showing (ditto with text
boundaries)!

Hope,

I believe most Word users, after while, appreciate seeing those marks in
their document, while creating, as a way to control their "white space
formatting."
Ideally, you don't control white space with multiple tabs and/or spaces in a
row or blank paragraphs in a row. Instead you, for example, should use the
special left tab, ...'your text', special center tab, ...'your text', or
special right tabs. Or format a "paragraph of text" with space before and/or
space after by using the menu Format|Paragraph...
There is a toolbar button that looks like a black filled-in Paragraph Mark
that can be used to (toggle) show/hide those marks you find disconcerting.
Also you can use the Print Preview button to see how your document will look
when printed and those marks won't be seen there.

Click on these links for information about the basic concepts behind using
Word.
