    - Objects as Properties in VBA - possible? Hello all, Is it possible for a property of an object in VBA to itself be an object? I'm working on a program that involves chemical equations, and consequently I have defined a couple of useful classes: "ChemicalCompound," and "ChemicalEquation." The ChemicalEquation class has as one of its members an array of ChemicalCompound objects, which represent the reactant compounds in the equation. I would like to keep the actual array private (i.e. access restricted to the class) and use a Property Get to access the ChemicalCompound objects in the array. Is possible for the return value of a Property Get to be an object of a user-defined class?     - Create editable document with permanent fields in Word 2003 Hello all, I'm going nuts trying to figure out how to create templates that populate from a data source, are completely editable, yet also have some way of marking and retrieving text from the populated locations in the document. The obvious answer to this is to use either form fields or bookmarks, since they both contain ranges and they can both be referenced with an associated name property. And they do indeed work, but they are easy to unintentionally delete by the users, which makes later parsing and retrieval of text from said fields impossible. I ran across one interesting idea to get around this limitation, which is to assign each form field its own section, and then to set those sections to ProtectedForForms = True. This ALMOST worked - which is, of course, even more frustrating than total failure :). Unfortunately, Word can't have multiple section breaks - even continuous section breaks - in a single line, and a number of my templates need to have four or five fields in close proximity. Having line breaks between them would be unacceptable for many of the templates, particularly the legal documents. A similar limitation occurs with bookmarks, but there I can't both protect the bookmark and assure that it won't be typed over accidentally. If I protect them then they can't be manually edited, but if I don't it only takes one long select and over-type and they're gone. I had previously been using Document Property fields to populate the document using the Custom Document Properties, auto-updating them, then detaching the fields from their references to make them editable. The problem is that once that's been done, I can't programmatically retrieve information from those fields, which makes future data gathering impossible - or manual, which is essentially the same for me :) I came up with a little function to find and store the index locations of each field in the document for later reference if I ended up having to use a type of field that doesn't have a name property - like a Quote field, for example - but I always end up running into the protection issue. The only thing I can think of other than that is to have the field areas linked to button-type macros that activate on double-click, but it would be a huge pain to convert all of my templates to use such a system, and I really don't like the idea of implementing such a code- intensive task for every field in a document if it's at all possible to avoid it. If necessary, I'll just eschew my dreams of data retrieval and stick with the Document Property fields, but I'd *really* prefer not to. Surely this isn't such a wild concept - can anyone help?     - Question about TOC position and footer Automating a word report. the TOC can take the space of 1 to 3 pages long. I'm looking for the correct way to insert the TOC on page 3 of the report. When I build the report, I leave page 3 empty (sectionbreak in top of page) , set all the toc field in the following pages and once done, I return or goto page 3 and then add the TOC. The problem that I have is with the footer of pages containing the TOC. If the TOC has just one page, the footer is OK. If the TOC has 2 or more pages, the footer is not repeated. (probably because no section break ?) here's the step I coded... .DifferentFirstPageHeaderFooter = True page1 :no footer page2 :add custum footer, wdHeaderFooterFirstPage, LinkToPrevious=false page3 : insert TOC, wdHeaderFooterPrimary, LinkToPrevious=true ...suppose toc is 3 pages long page4 : no footer page5 : no footer page6 : add custum footer, wdHeaderFooterFirstPage, LinkToPrevious=false OK How can I get a footer on page 4 and 5.     - Supress field updating on Word to PDF conversion Hello, I am running a macro that converts a directory of Word documents to PDF files. I am using a field in the footer that contains the file name. For some reason I cannot supress the field updating. I rename the documents via a script after placing the original filename in the footer. I need to preserve the original filename for archiving purposes. I have added the last 2 lines of code to the procedure to try to supress it, but it still updates the field to the new name.     - Overflow error 6 I have some complicated code that inserts a vertical bar in the left margin at the cursor location. The bar matches the point height of the font at the cursor location, or spans the selected range. I have to calculate the range start and end; and, to ensure that the bar is always at the same distance from the left margin, I also take into account the section margin lay out. Once in a while, I get an Overflow error 6 when running the code. There does not seem to be any rhymes or reasons. The only thing I may say is that it seems to happen if I rapidly use the code with various range lentghs. The debugger always points to the same line in my code, even if I move the statements around. While it does what I want to insert a document, I really want to modify it to use word 2003+'s compare and merge feature rather than just inserting a document into each other like chapters. desired results: 2+ same structure files to merge, but different contents all merged into file 1's structure with content appended to the appropriate sections and TOC's updated. question: I'm looking at the OK button inside the VB editor but I do not know the command for compare and merge.     - Populate Comments property from paragraph items Hello, Searching for something like this for many hours and still no luck. I have an account that provides me with approx. 300 word documents a month. I process these in batches and send them to a file server for further action. Is it possible to write a script or macro to take the first 4 paragraphs and insert that data into the document properties with BuiltinDocumentProperties? I have tried recording a macro, and using keyboard shortcuts to copy the paragraphs and pasting into the properties doesn't work. I am not very confident of my process for populating the two arrays with the data needed for the callbacks. My goals is to find the simplest way to make the data customizable to the user and accessible to the the callback. By putting the data in a table contained in the template. All the user needs to do is open the template and edit the table. Once that is done, then when the template loads the the compiler has to get to it. AutoExec is the only event that I know of that fires when a template is loaded. Is this correct and is this the best way? 2. a. I have not been able to isolate why, but when I put my Addin in the Word Startup Folder and start Word I always get an error message "Subscript out of range." b. If I remove the AddIn from the Startup folder and attempt to load the Add-In manually, I get a get the same message: "Subscript out of range." c. If I leave Word running, remove the AddIn, and load it a second time it loads and works perfectly without error. d. The error message never happens when I open the AddIn directly. I assume that this problem is caused by some sort of timing conflict with the AutoExec procedure and maybe I could correct it with a Do Events statement but I am not very familiar with those and I don't know how to proceed.     - Word 97 Won't Allow File Replacement Though this has worked well for years, it isn't anymore. - I export an ASCII delimited text file from another database program; - DDE commands are sent to Word to run a macro. The macro opens the exported file and performs mail merge ; - Suddenly newly exported text files from the database are not replacing the old ones (by the same name); - I have to shut down Word and restart.     - Reset to default printer I have a user that occasionally needs to send a print job somewhere other than the default printer. At that point Word remembers his last used printer but he does not and he ends up "losing" his print jobs by sending them to the wrong printer. Is there any way to force Word to always select the default printer when the Print dialog is open, even if the last print job went to a different printer? I'm hoping that there is a Print event that can be triggered with every print request to reset the selected printer to the default.     - Text Entry in Forms, Variables I am constructing forms in Word 2007 where I want to have the same functionality as is present in WordPerfect's variables. In WordPerfect, I create a variable in a form (for example, a variable for the name of a building, and I insert that variable in 12 different locations in the document. If I want to change the building name, I double click on any of the 12 occurrences of the variable, and the change is reflected in all 12 locations. I assumed Word 2007 has similar functionality, but I can't really find it, at least "out of the box". I am using the content controls with some coding to automate the updating of all similarly named controls, but I am having problems with that method. Am I missing something? Is there something in word that allows m, without writing code, to get more or less the same functionality as is present in WordPerfect's variables? Control+click has a serious flaw for use in a manuscript with a lot of endnotes at the end of sentences.     - Trying to move label control using VBA I have a Word 2003 document that allows users to select a location from a drop-down list to pre-populate the letterhead with the correct address. The letter is used for several companies within our organization. After making the selection from the drop-down list, the company name gets loaded into one label control with bold formatting, and the address gets loaded into a second label control directly below the company name. Some of the international addresses have more lines in them than the domestic addresses, and I want the last line to line up with a graphic on the letterhead. Since the company names and addresses are in two separate label controls, bottom-alignment causes blank spaces under the company name. It appears that my best solution is to determine how much vertical space the address will require, then move the label controls accordingly so the bottom lines up with the graphic. I attempted to combine the label controls, but it appears I cannot use multiple formats within the same control (which would also solve my problem). I found some information for programmatically placing shapes in Word, but I have not been able to use the code for the label control. The documents are all based on a template and the code is located in the template. I want to add a "publish" function that will prepare the document for sending out to customers (update a few fields, set document protection etc). It seems it is using "Normal", "Normal (Web)" and "Heading 3" styles.

I want to set the font and paragraph properties of the above styles and then
the modified styles take effect in current (long) document. What is the best
practice?

If I understand you correctly, open the document and modify the styles
therein. If you want to create all future new documents based on the
template with the same styles, check the 'add to template' box in the format
style dialog.

I modify it but the new settings is not taken in effect for the text that is
in the document now. I want it to be updated too.
