    - Changes to lines starting with an apostrophe Good day, I am trying to change the font color for any line in a document that begins with an apostrophe. I do this to highlight the comment lines when I have pasted VBA code into a Word doc after copying it from the VB editor. I have succeded in being able to do this when the first character of a line is A or B or C, etc., but cannot get the macro to detect the apostrophe symbol. I tried " ' " and Chr(39), but to no avail. Is there some magic regarding the apostrophe?     - Forms Protection and Comments Hi, My firm has several documents that contain "forms protection". The protection is for a coversheet in the first section of the document that contains a few fields. The rest of the document is completely unprotected but despite this I am unable to add comments to the unprotected sections. Does anyone know why this is and is there a workaround? These documents are used as templates by our users and it would be good to keep the protection in place in the first section whilst giving them full access to the other sections.     - How to Loop through document and gather statistics? I am an Access VBA programmer and don't really understand Word VBA programming. Basically I have MS Word files that I would like to loop through searching for particular word strings like "Private Sub", trap that entire line, then count the number of lines until an "End Sub" word string is encountered, then populate a table or something with the trapped line concatenating the count. Then search the next and so on through the entire document. Every "Private Sub" has a corresponding "End Sub". I guess this could be done by scaling the entire graphic by 80% or by emulating the Size|Define dialog one gets within equation editor, although I prefer the latter because it provides more flexibility.     - Numbering Choices Issue I would appreciate some advice regarding which paragraph numbering schema to use for the template I am creating. The following are examples of the different types of paragraphs: A.<tab> Text that may be long enough to wrap. The "A" is indented at .33 and the rest of the paragraph at 0. 1.<tab> One or two words. Same alignment as "A". Text and number bold. 1.1<tab> This could be one or two word - like a heading, or it could be a paragraph. First line Indented to .83 with the rest of the text aligned at .33. 1.1.1<tab> paragraph using the same concept of indenting and wrapping. "be a paragraph" should align with 1. and "and wrapping" should align with 1.1. I've read numerous articles on numbering, including Shauna Kelley's great explanation, and realize there are issues. Even though some of the 1 paragraphs would only contain a couple of words, am I best creating these all as Headings, or are they lists, or what are they? The documents are 50-80 page lease documents, so I want to make sure they are all created from a template that is as correct and stable as possible. I appreciate your input.     - Saved Template reverted back to old verion REALLY weird problem. I am working in Word 2007 creating a template. I worked on the template yesterday, created a new form, etc. Saved many times. Closed everything when I wen thome last night. When I came in this morning I opened the template and tested what I added yesterday - including the new userform (so this is how I know my changes were there this morning). I kept working on the template today, saving along the way. The last time I closed the template, when I re-opened it, I opened the template from the RECENT files list. (Which I have been trying not to do.) When I did that, the template reverted back to the version of the template I had been working on YESTERDAY!!! What is even stranger is my template has today's time/date stamp on it, yet when I directly open it from explorer, it still reverts back to the OLD version - no userform no changes from the past day! Over the past few weeks, I have noticed issues with files I have been pulling from RECENT files in Word 2007, so I have tried not to use it. Anyone having these type of issues??     - How to replace an image in the header Hi, I have a ms word 2003 document. I inserted an image into the header of the document using Insert->Picture->From File. I want to replace the image when the document is opened. When the document is opened, it runs a macro which should find the image and replace it with my own image. In the macro, when I try to access the Header with the following code. MsgBox ActiveDocument.Sections(1).Headers(wdHeaderFooterPrimary).Shapes.Count, vbOKCancel, "Shapes" This is always returning 0, inspite of having an image in the header.     - Checking for file type programmatically I have a program that looks for RTF files. Sometimes though it throws and error because someone just renamed there file from a .doc to a .rtf. I need to make sure that the file type is Rich Text, not just count on the file extension. Is there a VBA line for this?     - W2007: Invalid user name causes run-time error 4120 / 24 This seems to be a serious bug with potential damage to a lot of Add-Ins. To reproduce it, 1.. Start Word, click the Office button, then Word Options. Highlight the contents of the "User name" text box and hit the space bar, then OK. 2.. Open the Visula-Basic editor and type in the following lines of code Sub Test_Options() Options.ReplaceSelection = True End Sub [See below for a long list of other Options.[.] properties affected!] 3.. Run the above macro. Word will throw a "Run-time error 4120 Bad parameter". If you run the line from a password protected project, the error number will be 24 instead of 4120. The problem is reproducible with Word 2007 both on Windows XP or Vista - though we have in fact user reports only for XP. An invalid entry is either entirely empty or consists of one or more blank spaces only. (There may be more kinds of invalid entries.) Occurrence of entirely empty "User name" entries could neither be confirmed or negated in a reliable way. Our reliable user reports all had a single blank space there, other reports were not clear on the exact contents of the "User name" field. The question is: How on earth can you come up with an invalid entry like this in the first place? Well, at least six of our customers did. In one case, half of the machines in a school's computer lab were affected. So chances can't be negligible. Normally, an Office "User name" is defined when one first uses Word (or some other office application) on a given Windows user account. A dialog with two text boxes, "User name" and "Initials", is then presented to the user. The "User name" text box is pre-filled in with the name of the current Windows user account and the Initials field is constructed from this name. You can correct or complete the entries or leave them as they are. Contents of the "User name" text box are highlighted, when the dialog opens. So, if you just hit the space bar and then OK, you end up with an invalid Office "User name" as described above. It is not possible to create a totally empty "User name" field, though. If you try, the "User name" entry in Options goes back to the user account name after OK. I don't think, users are careless enough to enter a blank space in the "User name" field and confirm that with OK. My hypothesis is, that certain ways in which some OEMs set up the main User account in Windows and then complete the Office installation are the underlying root of this problem. I see some evidence for this conclusion in a) different naming restrictions for a Windows user account and an Office user name, and b) in different naming restrictions for the Office user name via Word Options text box and via Word VBA. There is even a difference between Word VBA and Excel VBA. Excel VBA does not complain about a "User name" consisting of a blank space only, and the code line Application.Username = " " (blank space) in Excel VBA will NOT throw an error but simply change the "User name" to a blank space. Of great importance for Word programming and patching: Once there is an invalid entry like that in the "User name" field, there's no reliable and user friendly way to correct it via VBA! With an invalid entry there, Application.Username in Word VBA will throw an error when attempting to read or write the value. Similar things will happen if you try to use Dialogs(wdDialogToolsOptionsUserInfo) for a work-around. The dialog will not even show on Dialogs(.).Display or .Show and will throw an error on Dialogs(.).Execute. You can actually read and write the .Name property of the Dialog and this way work around the problem. But to do this in a user friendly manner is rather complicated and not very reliable, because no one knows a) if there are other ways to end up with an invalid entry, and b) what effects it will have should Microsoft finally come up with a patch. So I tend to write an error handler that finally asks the user to repair the Office Username manually instead of trying to show the Word Options area by code and pre-fill in the "User name" textbox with a valid entry, e.g. the Windows user account name. Provided the Windows user account name is in fact valid in the sense of Word VBA. (I actually have the code to do that, but don't think I'll use it.) Discussion and suggestions for the best work-around are welcome, of course. What follows is a long list of Word VBA commands affected by an invalid username, i.e. throw an error 24 or 4120. I compiled this list from various contributions to the newsgroup microsoft.public.word.vba.general by Dmitri Karpov, MikeG, Mary Mc, jalanford, Perry, and my own observations. The crucial hint about the user name as causation for all the trouble came from JimmyHoffa. Here's the list: Dialogs(wdDialogToolsOptionsUserInfo).Show or .Display will not throw an error but do nothing at all. Depending on the previous paragraphs text, I may or may not have to indent all that paragraphs children. The problem am having is that my document has about 5000 paragraphs, and as my index into the ActiveDocument.Paragraphs(Index) gets above about 300, this really start slowing down... any one know why?     - Organizer copy in vba- temp location? Word2007 I am trying to copy styles from a template to whatever the active doc is. Some of these rely on features of later versions of Word, for example inserting nested tables into table cells. Some of our macros fail as a result of the "Disable features introduced after" beng set. We've tried the following approaches to removing the setting: - manually untick the setting - write macro code to set the DisableFeaturesIntroducedAfterByDefault property value in a macro - clear out and recreate our templates - delete the normal.dot and ~normal.dot files - delete the C:\Documents and Settings\<userid>\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\word10.pip office settings file - temporary files from the following directory: C:\Documents and Settings\<userid>\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\word10.pip None of these approaches work, and the setting keeps reappearing.     - How do I tell if text fits into a fixed-width table cell w/o wrapp I'm writing a macro to put a set of paragraphs (answer choices to a test question) into a table. The idea is to reduce page count, so instead of listing the answer choices a, b, c, and d on their own lines, they'll appear in a two-row, two-column table that takes up less space. The problem is that some questions' answer choices are simply too long to fit into the columns of the table, and will wrap to the next line within their cells--which looks bad and defeats the point (reducing page count). So I need a test to see whether a set of answer choices is short enough to fit into the fixed-width table. I can't count characters, because I'm using Times New Roman, a proportional font, so an "M" takes up more space than an "i." I'm also using Word 2002/XP.     - COM Addin/Template Issue in Word 2003 I'm having an issue trying to get a COM Addin created with VB 6 to work properly. I have a COM DLL Referenced in a Word 2003 template. I open Word and go to File...New to open this template then look at the VBE code windows and the TemplateProject (ThisDocument) contains the Sub procedures and the Reference to the DLL as expected. Yet when I try to run any of the DLL functions in the document, I get "Object Variable or With block variable not set" error. I can open Word then open my template as if to edit it and it works fine. It also works if I change the .DOT extension to .DOC and double-click to open it. I've tried attaching the template and setting it is an addin and that doesn't work either. I want to be able to see the fields, but not have Word (or my VBA commands) do anything. In particular, I want to count the number of forward slashs in a particular paragraph.     - A CheckBox Content Control Hi All, I have been working on some methods and code to create a custom Checkbox ContentControl in Word2007. I don't know why MS left the checkbox out of the ContentControl collection. I concede the legacy checkbox was clunky and ugly, but is served a purpose. The basic checkbox CC was pretty straight forward and just a simply extention of the iteractive toggle objects method posted on my website. First create a pair of macrobutton fields 1. {MacroButton Check "Winddings blank box symbol" } and 2. { MacroButton UnCheck "Wingdings Checked box symbol" } Note: Replace the value in quotes with the actual symbol. Toggled the field codes and create a pair of autotext entries of the field results. Named the first "Uncheck Box" and the second "Check Box" Insert a rich text Content Control in the document and placedthe "Unchecked Box" AutoText entry in the control. Select the Content Control and create a QuickPart "Check Box." I have 3 text boxes that we'll fill out (problem, decision, and decider) and when you hit the command button it will insert the information below any previous decisions that have been recorded. When creating a vba list box in excel, word, or powerpoint version 2000 or 2003 (with or without sp3) The application disappears of creates a general exception error. I'm not creating a form, just inserting a list box on the document,sheet or presentation. Steps to reproduce. 1. View, toolbars, visual basic. 2. Create a list box on the sheet from the tool bar. 3. Get out of design view. With the mouse wheel, hold the wheel down in the list box and scroll. It takes just one tick and boom. The mouse works in all of the applications as expected (other than the list box). I've tried it on serveral machines (xp,2k,2k3 standard and prof.) and several mice (microsoft ps/2 and usb). we have 14800+ SAM files that we need to convert to word. I have the
ability to open sam files in word and save them, but there's just to
many and the sam files are in a large folder structure.
Is it possible to write a macro that can open a large set of folders,
open, convert and save each sam file?

or does anyone know of any software that'll do this?

There is a Batch Conversion Wizard supplied as part of Word which will do
this. If you did a full install (rather than a default install) of Word, you
should find the Batch Conversion Wizard in the Other Documents tab of the
Templates dialog.

Take a backup first of course.
