1. Go to the Tools menu in Word.
2. Go to AutoCorrect Options... This will open a dialog box with tabs along
the top.
3. Click on the tab for AutoCorrect this dialog box. (It should already be
showing, but one never knows.)
4. Uncheck "Capitalize first letter of sentences."
This will turn the option off in Word (and other Office applications, I
believe). It will be off for existing documents as well as new documents.
