can the similar be done in Word 2007, or can codes only be assigned to a
command button object?

You can insert a MacroButton field in the document
(http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/UsingMacroButton.htm) and insert the
picture as the "display text" of the field, using in-line text wrapping.
