I need (a link to?) an explanation with examples of how to insert and
manipulate fields using VBA. I can do it by recording, but I know there's a
cleaner, more robust way to do it.

[This was the real question in my longer post, which got no replies:

Thanks...

Hi Chris,

Go to http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/index.htm, click the Macros/VBA
tab, and click the sub-category "Fields, Forms & Protected Documents".
Several of the articles there, particularly the first one, have the
kind of examples you need. If you still have trouble, post a bit of
code that shows what you have and explain what you want to do.
