    - Seeks Advice on VBA Literature. A few months ago I bought O'Reilly Press - Writing Word Macros, by Steve Roman, It served me quite well I've been able to use it to create company fax-sheets and formatting-macros for my own use. Last week I bought the SYBEX Publications' - VBA Developers Handbook, by Getz and Gilbert. But, it seems to be too far advanced.     - How can I pass a Word VBA variable to an ACCESS Query SQL string? Hi I want to use the contents of a variable in a Word VBA module as a criterion to filter records in an Access database. A SQL string however does not accept variables. Passing the variable to a form in the Access database seemed like a possible option, but I do not manage to make it work.     - enable macros ? Everytime I close Outlook 2000 (running win XP), I am getting a visual basic error statement saying "The macros in this project are disabled. Please refer to the online help or documentation of the host application to determine how to enable macros." I have clicked "tools, macro, visual basic editor"...and it freezes Outlook.     - Text Boxeses cant be converted hi all, I am developing a converter in vb which converts word document in html.I am using save as html option of word97. Everything is fine. But whenever any document is having text boxes. My converter does not convert it to html. Although i tried to convert text box in frames and tables and then converted the documnet to html.But this conversion distorts the appearence my document.     - document processing ok, access database contains company names, addresses, document security keys document A is a company garauntee letter, 1 page document, has placeholders in it using the naming convention of [datafieldname], [date], [certificationcodekey], etc goal is to create document b, that has 1 page for every company record that is processed. so user gets a list of companies to choose from, selects all that they desire and press teh print letter key. the program should then: 1) open document a 2) create new document b 3) insert contents of a into b 4) read a record from the database 5) search and replace the placeholders with data from teh database and with program generated values 6) go to end of document b, insert page break return to step3 until no more records to process. when i try dim documenta as document set documenta = document.open ("GaraunteeLetter") i get either err 53, file not found or 429 activex cannot create the object. this is driving me nuts. thanks Woody Tag: Seeks Advice on VBA Literature.     - Last page update help Does anyone know how to (if it is even possible) have a different "page last updated" date on each page of a document. I am working on a "how-to" manual and would like each page to reflect the exact date that page was last changed. For example if the manual is 90 pages, and page 7 was last changed on March 23, 2002, and page 81 was last updated on January 16, 2001, is there a way to have each page show that information (and update the date automatically). The "last saved on " date reflects the date the entire document was last saved, I want each page to be able to reflect the date that specific page was last changed. THANKS!     - "call" a document (file) into another document in a mail merge pr macro. I sthere a way to "call" a file, or document into a mail mere template or macro. I mail out some letter s from time to time. The basic document is the same but I insert one standard page into each document The info on this page changes often yet I do not want to have to change many documents which contain this page every time it changes. There are many diferent docs, all using this page. Much simpler would be to "call" this page into a document thereby allowing us to change it only one time as required.     - Table of Contents Creation Hello, I'm trying to make a macro create a TOC, but I do not want that TOC to use the normal Headings(Heading 1, through Heading 9). Instead, I wish the TOC to use a particular heading of my creation(It's called TOC). Creating the TOC by hand is quite simple in word, and I can deselct the Heading 1 through Heading 9, and have word only use my created "TOC" heading, however, getting the macro to do it isn't working.     - Setting and retaining a range Word2000 I would like to perform a search-replace within a selected range of text (as opposed to the whole document) and perform the same search repeatedly (within the original range) until the target text-combination no longer exists. (Specifically, "^p^p^p" to "^p^p", i.e., three contiguous paragraph marks to two.) I can't figure out how to retain the original selection (of course, the "original" selection changes internally with each pass of the search-replace). If you define a range as being the original selection, that named range no longer refers to the original selection (as altered) once the search-replace routine is run through the first pass. I tried defining the range by setting a bookmark at the beginning and one at the end of the original selection, but the search-replace routine destroys the end bookmark, so the orginally defined range can no longer be selected. Anyway, is there a foolproof way of defining the beginning and the end of the original selection, so the range can be reselected and the search-replace routine run till exhaustion? Thanks very much.     - avoiding password prompt when opening new document from a template I have a macro that creates a new document from a template file that is password protected against modification. When the macro goes to create a new file using that template, it prompts for a password, or to click the read only button. Is there some way I can automatically "click" the read-only button for the user with my macro?     - Hiding text from a macro I've written a macro which visits each paragraph in a table cell and hides it or unhides it depending on its style. The macro works correctly, but is very slow. Each iteration of the per-paragraph loop appears to take a large fraction of the second, and the fractions add up. I'm trying to be rewrite the macro to eliminate the per-paragraph loop. One step in the rewritten macro is to hide or unhide the entire text of the cell. It isn't working. I can set the text's Font.Hidden property, but it has no effect. That is, VBA neither changes the text's Hidden property nor changes the contents of the window. (Nor does it gives me an error.) Here's an extract of the code: Dim msgRange As Range ' . . . Set msgRange = Selection.Cells(1).Range ' Select the cell. msgRange.MoveLeft unit:=wdcharacter,count:=1,extend:=wdextend ' Just the text in the cell. msgRange.Font.Hidden = True ' Hide everything. I tried hiding the text by hand (which works) and recording the operation in a macro. The macro does exactly the same thing I do, except that it operates on Selection instead of a Range variable. I tried hiding Selection.Range in the immediate window (executing the exact statement from the recorded macro) and THAT has no effect.     - Document Map does not fire the XMLSelectionChanged even Hi, I find that if I navigate to text enclosed in an XML tag using the Document Map, the XMLSelection Changed event is not fired. This event does get fired if I navigate to the same location via a mouse click or by scrolling moving my cursor to that same location. Is this a known issue?     - Word Automation / Windows 2000 SP4 I have a program that uses word automation to open word, open a document, print a selected document, and closes word. This was on Windows 2000 SP3. Since I installed SP4 for Windows 2000, this Word automation does not work. Whenever I call the line in the above code 'objWord.documents.open ... " the program freezes and the word process hangs. The same happens if I try to run this code in a macro in Word VBA. Whenever it gets to the line that opens a file, and the file is on a shared network resource, it hangs. Again, this worked prior to SP4. Is there a new security setting in SP4?     - Need help getting entries from ToC I have some difficulties trying to extract entries form a Table of Contents in a Word document. What I want is, basically, to retrieve for each entry in a ToC the name (i.e. the text) of the entry and the point it's referring to (i.e. the name of the hidden bookmark). My first idea was to use the Paragraphs collection on the range of the ToC; but then I'm faced with the problem that, while it works quite well for all Paragraphs except the very first and very last, for both of the latter the Fields collection contains *all* the fields of the entire ToC, leading to a number of special case branches, which rely on a number of assumptions I made about the structure of the data in the collections in question. Consequently, I'm not 100% sure my solution is going to be water-proof in all cases; all in all I'm wondering (or rather hoping) that there is a simpler, more elegant and most of all more reliable method for accomplishing what I'm trying to do.     - Formating Text in Textframes I am able to use the for each - next method to run through textframes, and if a frame with a width greater than 200 is encountered I am able to set the left and right indentations. However, I can seem to be able to change the alignment of the text where the string "N/A" is found inside the frame. Am I going about this the correct way?     - Set word = nothing takes a looong time I have a VB6 app that uses vba against Word 2000. When I runs the line Set WordObj = Nothing it takes from 1 minut up to 10 minutes to get freed from memory.     - Blank line suppress in Word Automation I have code that merges access xp data into word templates by setting the values of Word document custom properties. The word templates have fields referencing the name of the custom properties For address info in the access db I have two possible field for address. Typically both have records for say people in an apartment, but for home address typically one, the second field, is null.     - Input box. I have an input box that I am using in a macro that requires the user to input an age between 18 and 65. I made it so they could only input ages in that range by using a loop with <>. And that works fine. If they input 15, it just loops. However, if they accidently try to input anything but a number (i.e. the letter a) they get a mismatch error. Is there some way for me to write code that will allow them to input ONLY numbers.     - Project organizer bug with user forms BUG REPORT BUG: There is a bug in the Word 2000 Project Organizer (accessed by opening the templates and add-ins window, clicking "Organizer", and clicking the "Macro Project Items" tab) that causes problems when user forms are transferred between an external template and the Normal template. ERROR MESSAGE: If the user form was transferred to the Normal template with the project organizer, when the user form is run, the error message "Run-time error '5981': Could not open macro storage." is displayed. ERROR OCCURRENCE: Specifically, I received this error when I tried to run the Find Symbol dialog box, which was provided in the sample macros supplied by Microsoft (Macros9.dot). I had transferred this user form and the subroutine that loaded it using the project organizer, as suggested in the Macros9.dot file. When I received this error message, I first tried retransferring the user form and subroutine. This did not change anything, so I tested the code subroutine by subroutine to pinpoint the location of errors. I found that certain bookmark instructions were causing errors, although there were no errors when I ran the user form from the external template. SOLUTION: I opened the template, and then in the Visual Basic Editor I opened the project explorer. I dragged both the user form and the subroutine that loaded it from the Macros9.dot template to the Normal template. The Find Symbol user form ran fine after this. POSSIBLE CAUSE: The project organizer may have messed up some of the code of the user form when transferring it, or not transferred some information needed to run it. For example, the text block with the number of the document - if the field "number" is empty, whole block should be hided in the print version.     - Cannot change link to an excel source file in my word doc I am trying to use sourcefullname to change the path and name of an excel file that is linked throughout my word doc. Everything I can find tells me that sourcefullname is a read/write string, but I cannot get the change to take. It goes through the motions, but when I check the source files in the Links window, it is still referencing the old file. I have written my own macro using sourcefilename and used a version from the ms web site (modified for word/excel vs. powerpoint/excel), neither one works. In fact, both macros often crash Word about 3/4 of the way through the process. (There are 30+ links that have to be changed.) If I step through the macro it doesn't crash. Any suggestions?     - Digital Certificates I write simple Word Macros for customers to attach to templates these are called when the template is opened and a new document is created using mail-merge etc. All of this works fine if I set the security to LOW.     - Differentiating ToC hyperlinks? When I retrieve the 'Hyperlinks' collection from a document, this collection also contains any hyperlinks that might be automatically generated as part of a ToC in the document. Now, since I'd like to handle ToC entries seperately from "ordinary" hyperlinks in the main body of the document, I'd like to know if there is a simple way to differentiate between a ToC link and a non-ToC link.     - keeping the Selection.Find.Found property Dear experts, I want to implement a loop to find certain strings within two documents alternatively AND have a condition to exit the loop. The intention is to figure out, if a certain type of string, found in the first document, is present in the other, continuing so until the end of the former document is reached. As far as I have got, this requires the command sequence Selection.Find.... .. Selection.Find.Execute (now a string behind the selection is read out and put into a variable) Windows(<second window>).Activate Selection.Find.Text = <variable> ... Selection.Find.Execute Windwows(<former window>).Activate (write the page number of the found string into the first document) all embedded within a loop Now, since the method Selection.Find... must be used in both the documents, the loop exit condition Until Selection.Find.Found = False does not work in the first document, neither the .Find.Execute boolean. How can the Selection.Find.Found Property be kept for one document, although I utilize a Selection.Find method also in the second? By moving the search in the second to a certain subroutine?     - Word Automation question Hi, What i want to do is take some html from a webpage and insert it into a word document on the server using asp/vbscript and ole automation. Ideally i would like to keep the webpage formatting and let word format the html. When i try and insert html into the word doc all the html tags appear on the page which is not what i want to happen.     - Missing toolbars and menub bars Hi All, I have a macro written in VBA that opens a document, does a mailmerge and then displays the resulting document to screen. The problem is that when the document is displayed there are no toolbars and no menu bars. I assume that there is something fundamental that I have not done. Anyone with any ideas?     - Table creation I looking for examples of VB that can create tables from the document text. The document text is outline numbered 4 levels deep. Some of the lines in the text are have a unique character style applied to them "Requirement". I looking to creat some VB in word that would build a table at the end of the document.     - ActiveDocument.FitToPages I have a multiple page Word document. The VBA that creates the doc puts a page break in between the sections of the doc. Each section needs to fit on one page, but it often grows to two pages. I want to use ActiveDocument.FitToPages or something like it to cause everything between my page breaks to get formatted (font size or margins, it doesn't matter) so that section fits on one page instead of two. The ActiveDocument.FitToPages method is designed to evaluate your entire doc and works great if you have a two page doc. But if you have a document of say 20 pages that needs to be 10 (one page per 10 "sections"), is there a different method that takes the hard page breaks into account? Additional info: These are not true section breaks. They are just page breaks. This document is a set of letters that get mailed out. The code that generates the letters is not a mail merge. The letters are created from a VB.Net routine that uses a dot file to create a new doc, fill in some custom tags, insert a page break and loop to the next person in the dataset.     - Calculate a due date in Word 2000 I'm trying to do the following in a Word merge: I'm trying to calculate a due-by date for court filings by having Word subtract 7 days from a court hearing date entered through a merge prompt. The hearing date is from a list of specific dates published by each of 3 different courts. The merge prompts for a hearing date through a {fillin} field I need to find how to have the merge itself calculate a due-by date that is 7 calendar days *prior* to the hearing date (it doesn't have to account for weekends, holidays, or anything like that). For instance, in response to the merge's prompt, I enter a hearing date of 7-31-03. I want to have the merge output the date of 7-24-03 with the formatting being MMMM d, YYYY. I already know how to format the date output with the \@ switch. So, the output would be: "The hearing date is June 31, 2003, and the due-by date is June 24, 2003." Just for test purposes I threw the following together (obviously, {}will actually be merge fields) {set testdate{fillin "Enter the Hearing date."}} {set duedate{ =({testdate} - 7)}} The hearing date is: {testdate \@ "MMMM d, YYYY"} The due date is: {duedate \@ "MMMM d, YYYY"} entering this into Word with actual field codes and running the little routine correctly prompts for the hearing date, but the due date displays as -34. I'm almost **certain** I've seen how to do this SOMEWHERE before, but I just can't remember where or what the field coding was!! Is it maybe something involving converting the input date to a serial-date format or something???? To be sure, I *could* just have the user enter the hearing date and then also prompt for the due-by date to be entered, but I'd rather cut down on the entry of extra data if possible! I *can't* go the opposite route, having the user enter the due-by date and then just adding 7 days, as the hearing dates are *very* specific. I need to do this from within Word itself.     - Execution Error "5" message when accessing Word Whenever I access Word or any Word documents, a Visual Basic dialog box gives me the above error message. I have dis-installed and re-installed word and still nothing happens. The only new programs that were installed at least 3 weeks prior to getting this problem, were MemoKit designed to speed up my computer and Secure IE and Private IE from McAffee to get rid of spam.The people from MemoKit tel me that their program does not interfere with any programs.     - Report automation Hi All, I need to make reports with Word, so that a customer may preformat it. The idea is that the customer prepares a template document and defines some "reserved" bookmarks through it. The application will open a new document based on this template and feeds the document with data at the reserved locations (bookmarks). It seems to work more or less with single text. The user has only to format a word and to 'bookmark' it. The application replaces that bookmark with the real data, which keeps the predefined format. Fine! But we generally have tables to insert and we would like to let the user carry out their formatting in the template. Unfortunately, I don't know to achieve that, because I don't know how the user can predefine a table style of a bookmark which could be applied to the real table, inserted later by the application ? A few months ago I bought O'Reilly Press - Writing Word Macros, by Steve
Roman, It served me quite well I've been able to use it to create company
fax-sheets and formatting-macros for my own use.

Last week I bought the SYBEX Publications' - VBA Developers Handbook, by
Getz and Gilbert. But, it seems to be too far advanced.

Is there a middle of the road book that will start me where the first book
finished and lead me up to the second?

Any advice would be appreciated.
