I am unable to determine how one can get a blank button onto the toolbar to which a macro can be assigned.  - Problem with difference between sentences and lines Hi, With the help of some of you I am able to read word (in-line) comment with page and line numbers. I can store it and put it back in a document again. I have even fixed the problem with shifting lines (and pages) after comment insert. But I have another problem. Reading comment is page, line related, inserting is Sentence related. (Reading must stay page, line related for 'other' reasons!) There are times when there are 2 sentences on 1 line. In that case my comment indicator is (sometimes?) visible on the next/wrong line. The frequency of occurrence is limited, so it is no big issue, but I like it to be perfect. So the simple question now is: How can I step thru a word document using lines numbers?  - firing event when word application closes I have been reading up on how to fire events on vb when documents open/close and also when the word application quits... i have also read the document http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/MacrosVBA/PseudoBeforeClose. htm which talks about the bug in the DocumentBeforeClose event. My main problem is that i need to somehow know when the user closes (hits on the x) the word application. I have some code checking to see if documents are open if so, it closes them. in variable declaration on top.. (dim withevents wapp as new word.application) in some method. If wapp.Documents.Count > 0 Then wapp.Documents.Close (Word.WdSaveOptions.wdDoNotSaveChanges, Word.WdOriginalFormat.wdWordDocument, False) End If ******** the problem is thus the following if the user closes the word application then the wapp.documents.count>0 will give me an error( the RPC server is unavailable) since their is no wapp object in the first place. I need to know when the user closes the wapp application so i can start it up again or bypass some lines of code... Again, the article found here (http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/MacrosVBA/PseudoBeforeClose .htm ) has a way around this problem but i have used to code and set breakpoints and i never seem to hit them--> event now being fired on method...  - error 462 remote server does not exist I have office XP and used the code from the KB article to sent the current Access XP record to Word using Automation: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx? scid=KB;EN-US;q210271& Once in awhile, one user gets the error 462 remote server does not exist or is unavailable. In my code, I do not quit Word because the user needs to preview and print the doc. She then closes the Word and not save the file. At this point is when the error happens. This problem is not happening on any other computer. I've done a search thru google about this error and read about issues one may run into using early binding and about Automation Error Calling Unqualified Method or Property (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx? scid=kb;EN-US;189618). I'm not quite sure where to fix the problem in my code, and why only one user is having this problem. Please help!  - Normal.dot really big A couple of years ago, when the Normal.dot in my Word 97 was about 600 KB, I asked how big a Normal.dot was too big, and was told that even twice that size was no problem. As the number of my macros keeps increasing, so does the size of Normal--now it's up to 1.42 MB. Plus I have a global add-in template of about 1 MB. Also, I occasionally run the Word Code Cleaner. (The tootal number of macros in the two templates is ... 400). Is this a problem? Word seems to function normally. The only problem is that occasionally I'll be working on a document and Word will freeze up, forcing me to shut it down from the Close Program dialog box.  - Commandbar disapear Hi, I made a commandbar in at template to activate a form. This works fine, but you can only run the form once in the template and I would therefore delete the commandbar when activating the form. This works also fine - BUT now, I got problems - because next time I activate the template, the commandbar is gone... I have tried different codelines like: 'ActiveDocument.CommandBars("Afregning").Visible = False 'CustomizationContext = ActiveDocument 'CommandBars("Afregning").Visible = False But the Commandbar will not only disapear in the current document. Do anyone know the code or reason? I cannot use autonew or anything starting with the template cause the the template is starting up in IE, and that do not work.  - Removing and replacing paragraph marks Hi, I am creating a macro that will take a text file of many records separated by section breaks. This file comes from Wordperfect, so instead if Endfields, I have paragraph marks. I need to make this file into a data source for different shell docs. So far I have a macro that replaces all the paragraph marks with tab characters (I would use commas, but there are commas in the records already for monetary amounts), then the macro replaces each section break with a paragraph mark. Finally, the macro types the fields that will be used as the headings for the data source. The only problem I am running into now is that the final data field has a paragraph marker after it, so when I have that replaced with a tab character it produces more fields than are in the header. This is a problem with the final merge because it says there are too many fields. Is there a way create a macro that will go to the final line of the record and remove only that one paragraph marker while keeping the section break?  - Office Automation - starting Word from Access I'm trying to do a mail-merge from Access, but with Word running on a separate server (using dcomcnfg to cause Word to be started remotely).  - Insert Shape in multiple Headers Hi, I'm working on a vba macro (which will be used with a UserForm) that will insert a text box in the all headers. The headers will already have shapes or text located in them so I do not want that text to be deleted. Basically I have Different First page and no other sections. So I want the box to appear in the Different First Page and Primary Headers. I hope I don't have to create two macros in order to have the textbox appear in multiple sections. or do I? I also noticed that if I don't use the If stmt and only say wdHeaderFooterPrimary, then it will only insert the textbox on the current page header and I then have to go to the first page and run the macro again for that page. ;o( Well, Headers will be the death of me yet.  - Preventing an Excel Data Source from closing Hi All, Office 97 & Windows 97 Question: Is there a way to prevent an excel data source from automatically closing when you close the corresponding mail merge document? I've set up 2 mail merge documents(called Ltr.doc & Stat.doc) that both use data from the same excel data source(Data.xls) I've set up a macro to merge the documents it basically works as follows: 1) Open Ltr.doc 2) Merge Ltr.doc to the printer 3) Close Ltr.doc 4) Open Stat.doc 5) Merge Stat.doc to a new document 6) Save the resulting new document 7) Close Stat.doc The problem is that when Ltr.doc is closed (Step 3) it automatically closes Data.xls. Then when Stat.doc is opened it reopens Data.xls (step 4), this slows down execution. The document is going to be created based on a standard tempate and attached to the template. Problem is that if the templates are moved then this will not work.  - Reference Memory Hi, I am currently using Windows 2002 and am working on a template that uses two different templates with 3 autonew userforms. When I test this template on my computer, it works fine (isn't that what they all say?), but when a few of my users try it at their own computers, they get a referred or reference memory error and then followed by a windword.exe that shuts Word down. I am thinking maybe I have a memory leak or something like that in my code, but I am not sure where. The first macro consists of three userforms that allow the user to enter data that is then inserted into the each page in the template. The second macro takes a text file stored in a certain location, removes line breaks and other garbage and converts it into a comma-delimited file that can be safely merged with the template.  - Document Management from Word and Access using VBA (Office XP) I've got a document consisting of several chapters, each of which have been broken out into their own document. I've got an access database, listing customers and the chapters they are to be provided. What I -don't- have (and can't seem to find anywhere, having tried in vain at MS's site and a hundred different programming sites) is a way to query the database from within Word. I have two tables, Customers and CustomerChapters (actually I have more, but these two will do for now). Customers contains: 1. CustomerID 2. CustomerName CustomerChapters contains: 1. CustomerChapterID 2. CustomerID 3. ChapterID 4. OrderOfAppearance What I want to do: 1. Query the Customers table for all customer names. 2. Present all customers in a pop-up window with a drop-down list. (steps 1 and 2 are optional; I could just type in the customer ID in the macro, but we're dreaming big, here :o) ). 3. Query the Customers table for all chapter IDs belonging to the selected (or specified) CustomerID. 4. Retrieve the first word doc identified by the retrieve in step 3 (as arranged by OrderofAppearance). 5. Append the next word doc, and the next, 'til the end. I know the SQL code, so that's not too much of a problem. What I need (long time to come to a point, huh? :o) ) help with is the VBA code, particularly for steps 3 and 4. Can anyone help?  - Generic Template to custom document. I'm looking for ideas to cerate common Word templates for memos, letters, etc. and have the user information inserted automatically when the template is chosen. My goal is to have a common set of templates on a network share so that changes are easy to implement. Items like Name, E-mail Address, Telephone Number, Addresses, etc are all available from the Exchange global address book but I've been unable to find a VBA example that shows how to access that information for the current user. I'm considering other options like creating a registry key/values with a user form to maintain the info. Has anyone already solved this problem? Could you please share the solution? Can you point me to a web site that can get me started? I can write the code (and will happily share it) if I can just get pointed in the right direction.  - What is the normal way to use a template with a userform? I have a userform that helps generate Word documents. The userform is in a dot file. So far my coworkers think we should be passing the users the dot file and have them create the doc files by clicking it in explorere. I think this is funky. My idea of how this should be used in the org is to [1] Create a toolbar in the dot file that has one button that when clicked runs a function that opens the userform. [2] place the dot file (with userform) in a network accessible template storage location [3] create a word doc file named something like "create new dandy document.doc" and set it's template to the dot file above. [4] distribute the doc file mentioned above to the users. Now they can open the userform by opening the doc file and clicking the toolbar command button. If they want to save the doc that they generate (which they won't always need to) they can call it whatever they want. Even if they blow it and save the doc as "create new dandy document.doc", the name it already has, it's ok (sort of) as the next user will just overwrite the saved doc text with whatever they generate. Is this a good approach to take? Any others that are standard? I guess it would be cool to keep the users from saving the doc they generate as to the doc they originally opened, if it's "create new dandy document.doc" I'd need to be able to mod it, but not the users... any tips on how to manage that issue?  - Application.GetOpenFilename I am trying to duplicate some Excel code in Word and cannot find the correct command. Basically, I have a simple Excel macro that changes the directory and launched the Open file dialog box and then waits for me to manually select which file I want to open. Then it opens the file and ends the macro. I use this macro several times a week to go to a server where certain files are stored, thus avoiding always have to manually change the path in the Open Files dialog box. I started with the Excel code, but I cannot find the Word equivalent (if there is one) to the Excel "Application.GetOpenFilename" command. I can make it work if I name the specific file, but it would be clumsy to have half a dozen buttons doing the same thing, only with different file names attached.  - Using the Insert File Dialog Hi, I am working on a template that needs to insert a file into the new document created by the template (using Word 2000). When the InsertFile dialog is called, I need it to point to a specific directory (C:\Columbus Radiology Emails), with the files of type set to Text files. I have the following code: Public Sub InsertAFile() With Dialogs(wdDialogInsertFile) .Name = "C:\Columbus Radiology Emails\*.txt" .Show End With End Sub When I run this code, it opens the InsertFile dialog box with files of type set to Text files, however, it does not select the correct directory (it goes to the default directory, My Documents). I can't set the default document directory to the above, because this path is only used once a week for this one particular task. The rest of the time, My Documents is used for opening closing and saving documents.  - SaveAs interactively vs. programmatically Hi all, When interactively having an open document A.doc using File SaveAs and giving name B, Word saves the document as B.doc and keeps it open as B.doc while A is closed. In my specific situation however, using this function programmatically it keeps A open in stead of the saved B. My situation: 1. using an add-in, started with the command-line /L<add-in.dot> switch 2. Intercepting the Save event by a class module with a <application>_DocumentBeforeSave procedure. and now the "special" 3. for a lot of reasons the document is first created as a temporary document with a name <unique-name>.TMP and after when the user really saves it the <application>_DocumentBeforeSave is fired: back to "normal" 4. Class module code Option Explicit Public WithEvents WApp As Word.Application Private Sub WApp_DocumentBeforeSave(ByVal Doc As Document, SaveAsUI As Boolean, Cancel As Boolean) If Mid(Doc.Name, Len(Doc.Name) - 3, 4) = ".TMP" Then With Dialogs(wdDialogFileSaveAs) .Name = Mid(Doc.FullName, 1, Len(Doc.FullName) - 4) & ".doc" .Execute End With End If MsgBox "DocumentBeforeSave" End Sub 5. I am sure that this event is fired: the messagebox pops up and the <unique-name>.doc appears in the folder. 6. My first attempt was even simpler (I still like it better), but gave the same result: .... .... If Mid(Doc.Name, Len(Doc.Name) - 3, 4) = ".TMP" Then Doc.SaveAs Mid(Doc.FullName, 1, Len(Doc.FullName) - 4) & ".doc" End If .... Result: ================= 7: Which one of the 2 options above I try: still the <unique-name>.TMP is the (only) open one and not <unique-name>.doc Do I do something wrong or is it not allowed to use the .TMP extension? Of course, I can program around it with things like <unique-name>-TEMP.doc, but I always try to take the most straight-forward way as I see it, which was SaveAs in this case. Above all: I don't like things happening that I don't understand or that behave different then they - in my opinion - should. Please comment on this.  - Formatting for merge fields Is there anyway to format specific merge fields so that they can have dashes, decimal points or dollar signs in appropriate places? I have a user that merges a bunch of informtion into several merge fields and I want only certain fields to have dashes, certain fields to have dollar signs and decimal points and so on.  - Print driver Hi Guys, Have been developing a VBA app from which I would like to change printer driver settings to allow the user to print in duplex and in colour. I have been using code from KB article Q230743 which calls the API function SetPrinter. For duplex this works fine. However, the DEVMODE property dmColor seems to have no effect on any of my printers. Do any of you have any experiance of using dmColor? Has anyone made this work? Andy .  - VBA routine slower when Word already open The VBA routine that I've created runs much more slowly when MS Word is already open. If it's NOT open, then the routine opens up Word and runs pretty quickly (about 10 seconds). But if Word is already open, then it's very slow, taking about 5 minutes to finish the routine. This problem only happens with Word 2002, to the best of my knowledge. With Word 97, for example, the routine runs just as fast whether or not Word is open. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening, and what I can do to speed up the routine when Word is already open? FYI, the application starts in Excel where the user creates a certain product configuration. Once they've created the configuration, the user invokes a VBA routine (via a button) that opens up MS Word and searches for sections to pull out of a Word-based "library" of subdocuments so that a proposal (based on the selected subdocuments) can be assembled. combined w/out referencing to each file explicty i.e 1.doc
2.doc rather something to the extent of *.doc .
I hope you know what it is that I'm trying to say
and output this to anywhere msgbox or a text file or write
it to the active document.
