What I'm trying to do is keep wacky paragraph styles from other
documents from being pasted into our official company documents.

In Word 2003, I am able to set the Styles Protection and only allow
certain paragraph styles to be pasted in. Any other styles get forced
to Normal style.

What I just discovered is that this is unsupported in Word 2002, and
we've got almost an even split of 2002 & 2003 users here.

I've also discovered that that when I turn on Styles Protection in 2003, it
then doesn't allow me to do any character formatting either (bold, italic,
underline, etc.).

Is there a way to set Paragraph Styles Protection yet still allow Character
Formatting in both 2002 and 2003?

THANKS,
Matt

Assuming that I remember correctly, styles protection was introduced
in Word 2003, which would explain why it doesn't work in Word 2002.

As for the character formatting, you can fix that (in Word 2003). All
you have to do is allow the application of *character styles* to text.
There are a couple of built-in styles that can be used: Strong and
Emphasis (but, of course, you can create your own styles, if you
prefer).

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for the info.

1) Where do I allow Character Styles at?
When I select Tools > Protect Document... in 2003, it brings up the Task
Pane.

When I select 1. Formatting restrictions > Settings..., all I can choose
are Paragraph Styles.

2) Is there any equivalent to this in 2002?

Thanks,
Matt

1. You should be able to pick any styles, not just paragraph styles.
See this article:

Restrict formatting of a document
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HP010447461033.aspx?pid=CH010397751033

You may also need to take a look at

2. No.
