When I try to create an index with subentries, I find
that the same main entry sometimes appears for each sub-
entry instead of only once with the sub-entries listed
below.

For example, instead of the following:
adding,
email messages
footers

I get this:
adding,
email messages
adding,
footers

However, oddly enough, there are some entries where it
does work correctly. The index field codes look exactly
the same in both cases, so I don't know why they look
differently in the generated index.
Help?

Hi elisa,

When you check the field codes, turn on nonprinting characters (click
the ¶ button). Make sure you don't have spaces or other invisible
characters at the beginning or end of the main entry in some fields
and not in others.
